Learning To Learn

PBS The purpose of implementing School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support at VRS School is to embed a culture of positive behaviour through explicit teaching (as opposed to punishment). Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, in the absence of positive strategies is ineffective. Introducing, modelling, and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important step of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioural expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehaviour to occur before responding. TELL—Introduce the expected behaviour and why it is important. SHOW– Demonstrate or model the rule. PRACTICE– Role play expected behaviour in relevant contexts. MONITOR RETEACH

Expectations Verney Road School has a culture of four key expectations, these are what we value: Be Safe ~ we are committed to the promotion of behaviours and creating environments that ensures the wellbeing of every member of the school community. Be Respectful ~ we are committed to accepting each other as we are and valuing our strengths and differences. Be Responsible ~ we are committed to supporting each other, for being accountable for our actions and encouraging all to achieve independence. Be a Learner ~ we are committed to all members of our school community having a go at diverse learning opportunities and by reflecting on our mistakes and not giving up, we build success.

Matrix The Behaviour Expectation Matrix translates Verney Road School’s four expectations into expected behaviours. Expected behaviours are explicitly taught in the classrooms. each classroom around the school. It is referred to and discussed

Learning to Learn At the beginning of each term Verney Road School focus on ‘Learning to Learn’. The purpose is to establish clear and high expectations around routines for students including: Readiness to begin the day/session (i.e. lining up, bags away, sitting on the floor/at tables) Cues for listening and following instructions (5L’s) Moving around the school between classes Working and learning in groups Working and learning individually Consequences/rewards for behaviour Importance of our school values – Be a Learner/Be Respectful/Be Responsible/Be Safe Why Learning to Learn? To provide teachers and students with an opportunity to get to know each other. To establish classroom and school expectations and allow each class to bond as a group. To foster the development of leadership skills and each student’s ability to cooperate. To enable students to determine their own strengths and learning styles. To make the start of the year a positive experience for students and staff.
