Residential Support Worker

Background: Tui Ora Limited (TOL) was officially launched on 1 July 1998. The Company was established following extensive consultation involving Taranaki Iwi and Māori health providers. TOL was set up as a Company to create an organisational structure that would provide accountability for decision-making and ensure resources could be managed in the most efficient and effective way possible. TOL is a not-for-profit organisation. The aim of TOL is to improve the health status of Māori in Taranaki. To achieve this aim the organisation has two broad objectives: o To improve access to appropriate levels of health and other related services. o To facilitate activities that address the broader determinants of health including:  Inequalities of income  Employment  Education  Housing  Culture TOL provides an opportunity for Taranaki Māori to take an active role in the planning, implementation, delivery and monitoring of health and related services and activities. The Position:

 The Residential Support Worker (RSW) will provide recovery-focused support services in community-based housing for Tāngata Whaiora who experience mental health disorders with higher levels of acuity.  Will be part of an appropriately trained and qualified support workers team, supported by clinical staff to provide 24-hour, seven days per week support to meet Tāngata Whaiora’s individual needs;  Will deliver services that will contribute to flexible Whānau Ora outcomes.  Undertake other duties as required that the Residential Support Worker is competent in or will undertake training related to service delivery.

Responsible to: The appointee will be responsible to the Clinical Services Leader (CSL) who is accountable to the Executive Leader Service Delivery. Key Working Relationships:

Expected Result - reduces their need to utilise more intensive mental health services; - is inclusive of the Tāngata Whaiora’s cultural needs; and - might contribute to meaningful, positive change in that person’s life.  Will be awake and directly available during Support Worker’s rostered 12 hour shift to respond to the needs of Tāngata Whaiora.  Will ensure Tāngata Whaiora have access to clinical support and assistance.  Will provide services that may: - provide assistance and coaching in meeting responsibilities (cleaning, meal preparation, purchasing household provisions, laundry) in such a way as to enable each person to participate as fully as they are able without unreasonable expectations and with health and safety requirements met; - support Tāngata Whaiora to take responsibility for decisions about household management and activities; and - provide support and access to community resources (e.g. income support, social networks, sports, employment and/or training opportunities) where this is indicated as a support need by the Tāngata Whaiora.  Encourage each Tāngata Whaiora to take a lead role in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of their individually planned recovery-focused support services.  Ensure reporting requirements are completed in a timely manner e.g. PRiMHD, Quarterly Reports/Narratives for MoH.  Ensure the following processes are monitored but are not limited to assessment, treatment, intervention and support, review process and discharge.  Ensure a professional service is provided to Tāngata Whaiora and Whānau.  Ensure all administrative tasks are completed in a timely manner.  Ensure all operational tasks are completed in a timely manner and includes: - maintenance of an effective system of homecare; - facilitation of household duties as required; and - carrying out household duties including cleaning as delegated and requested by management.  Ensure the implementation of Whānau Ora model of care.  Maintain key partnerships.  Build and maintain relationships with care providers to enhance multi-disciplinary service delivery.  Maintain effective relationships with the Company, providers, Tāngata Whaiora/Whānau and stakeholders.

PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Education/  National Certificate in Mental Health Level 4 (Mental Health Support Work). Training:  Trained in (or in process of training) and supported to provide community-based, recovery-focused support services.  Full Driver’s Licence.  Commitment to on-going training.  Experience or demonstrate an understanding of reporting. Experience:  Knowledge of applicable regulations governing clinical practice.  Understanding of mental health, consumer and advocacy issues.  Proven experience of evidence-based best practice in mental health.  Previous experience working in a large, diverse organisation.  Experienced in use of Microsoft products.  Understanding of Māori models of health and the application of the Treaty of Waitangi in practice. Competencies,  Knowledge from an Iwi and a Pakeha perspective, with an understanding of the dynamics present in these relationships. Knowledge,  Awareness of challenges facing not for profit organisations and the MHA and social services sector. Skills,  Able to plan and achieve goals in an environment of scarce resource. Attributes,  Ability to communicate comprehensive information, including presentation, written and oral. Abilities:  Proven ability to form collaborative relationships with stakeholder groups.  The ability to critically think, coach and influence others.  Practices, promotes and creates a culture that fosters high standards of ethics and integrity, is personally trustworthy, delivers on promises and honours commitments.  Ability to prioritise and make consistent recommendations based on fact and an accurate understanding of the situation.  Commitment and knowledge to recommend mitigation of risks.  Has a natural, open manner and level of self-confidence that helps generate trust and good working relationships.  Able to demonstrate practical understanding of the aspirations and challenges facing Māori communities.  Te Reo Māori and knowledge of Taranaki Tikanga and the ability to uphold and apply Tikanga Māori in the role is preferred.
