Position specific competencies Ability to Learn New Skills Tends to learn new skills quickly on his/her own AND apply them both quickly and effectively to work situations. This is in distinct contrast to those who struggle when asked to learn or embrace new skills, or who fail to quickly and proactively apply new skills back on the job. Application of New Skills Makes it a point to put new skills and knowledge to use on the job in a timely and effective manner. Applies new skills on the job before forgeting what was learned, and ensures that these skills are used to create a positive impact on a day-to-day basis. This is in direct contrast to those who delay efforts to apply new skills or knowledge or who allow themselves to get discouraged when new skills feel awkward or when they do not achieve immediate results. Such individuals typically fail to achieve the benefit of new skills and knowledge back on the job and frequently go back to their old ways of doing things. Being Persuasive and Convincing Is able to convince, inspire or motivate people to behave in a desired manner. Uses an appropriate mixture of facts, logic and enthusiasm to persuade the maximum number of people about the wisdom of following a particular course of action. Demonstrates confidence in the actions being advocated and acts in a way that demonstrates his or commitment and credibility. This is in contrast to those who fail to

demonstrate confidence in what they are advocating or recommending, fail to follow their own recommendations or are generally ineffective and unsuccessful in their efforts to inspire others to embrace a particular course of action. Building Organizational Commitment Demonstrates commitment, loyalty and appreciation for the organization. Conveys a high level of concern for the well-being of all employees, helping to ensure that both their needs and those of the organization are met. Consistently speaks highly of the organization, its employees and its mission. This is in distinct contrast to individuals who communicate a lack of pride or confidence in the organization, a lack of concern for the work/life balance of any of its employees, or a lack of loyalty or commitment to the continued success of the organization. Building Trust Builds and maintains trust with members of his or her team, as well as with stakeholders outside the team. Accomplishes this through open and honest communications and by following through on all commitments made. Has earned the respect of team members and other stakeholders. This contrasts with individuals who have not gained respect from team members and stakeholders because of their track record of not being reliable in fulfilling commitments and/or not communicating openly and/or honestly. Change Management Proactively assesses the need for change, seeing to it that appropriate resources are available to facilitate changes, considers factors that will support or hinder change initiatives, enthusiastically promotes change in terms of the the expected benefits, as well as removing or lowering the impact of potential obstacles. This is clearly different from those who tend to react to change and do so in a manner that reduces the probability that change will be successful. Communication Communicates effectively and appropriately. Uses good judgment as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished. Speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience. Listens to others and allows them to make their point. Company/Business Perspective Considers the needs and objectives of the business as a whole and is able to focus on priorities beyond his or her own or those of the immediate group. Conceptual Thinking Grasps concepts, patterns and underlying issues. Uses past experiences to help identify likely causes and solutions to problems that might otherwise seem to be unique events. Helps others see patterns and concepts by using examples and analogies that relate well to their own experience and current knowledge level. This is distinctly different from the behavior of those who struggle to see general concepts, patterns or key underlying themes and issues; who are unsuccessful in their efforts to identify similarities to previous experiences; and/or who use analogies or examples that are too obscure or that just fail to resonate with those who also need to understand key principles or insights. Coordinate and Collaborate Initiates or joins problem solving efforts and projects with other functions,

departments and units to address shared concerns and achieve needed results and consistently works to make these efforts productive. Creativity Applies creativity and originality in the work setting, when appropriate. Suggests or applies new ways of addressing ongoing work issues and challenges. Sees possibilities that others have not yet seen, or combines ideas and approaches suggested by others in a unique manner that results in breakthroughs and improvements. Understands when to be creative and when to stick with what exists now. Evaluating New Technologies Identifies the need for new technology, thoroughly assesses features, risks and benefits of alternatives, and matches new technologies to existing organizational skills and practices. Flexibility Adjusts quickly and effectively to changing conditions and demands. Discusses change as a necessary and inevitable aspect of organizational life as well as an opportunity to learn new things. Has a similar view and approach to potentially stressful situations. Invests personal energy toward accepting and adapting to change that others use toward resisting or resenting it. Innovative Thinking Looks out for new and innovative approaches that will improve efficiency. Embraces and champions new ideas and encourages others to do likewise. Recognizes and rewards people and teams who are creative and innovative. This is in sharp contrast to those who tend to embrace the status quo, struggle with new approaches and discourage others when they are creative and innovative in the pursuit of increased efficiency or effectiveness. Presentation Skills Comes across as confident and well-prepared when making group presentations. Makes effective use of visual aids or presentation software and looks at ease while handling questions from the audience.
