Position Title: Alcohol & Other Drugs Counsellor

The role of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor is to provide clinical interventions to clients accessing the service. Appropriate interventions include psycho-education, the application of contemporary addiction counselling theories that are applicable to a diverse client group including those with a dual diagnosis, and referral. The approach taken conforms to the principles of harm minimisation. This position is funded through the Department of Health's Drug Treatment Service’s Mental Health, Drug and & Regions Division. Establish and maintain working relationships with and between appropriate agencies, including law enforcement agencies. Provide clinical interventions for clients with complex issues and/or require assistance in reducing their substance use. This includes assessment, developing and implementing an Individual Treatment Plan and periodic progress reviews. Opioid Replacement Therapy and facilitating referrals for detox and rehab may be required. Liaise with AOD Services to identify service gaps and assist in planning of appropriate service provision. Attend Court as required including undertaking Court Drug Assessments Application of contemporary addiction counselling theories that are applicable to a diverse client group including those with a dual diagnosis and that operate within a harm minimisation framework Achieve program targets as per funding arrangements Attend team, staff and supervision meetings. Knowledge of the D.H.S. Victorian Dual Diagnosis Initiative and the ability to implement the key recommendations. Participate in the orientation and/or supervision of secondary/tertiary students undertaking placement at CAH as required. Participate in the Family & Community services duty work and intake roster.

Essential –Tertiary qualifications in a health-related discipline Completion of AOD and Dual Diagnosis competencies or willingness to undertake this. Current first aid certificate Registration with relevant professional body. Extensive working knowledge of alcohol and other drugs and harm minimisation. Familiarity with ADIS database Familiarity with ACSO/COATS reports and treatment completion advice paperwork An understanding of issues related to families at risk and Child Protection. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Well developed interpersonal skills.

Computer literacy Demonstrated participation in professional development and identified future PD interests. A current Police Check. And a current ‘Working with Children’ check. A current Victorian Drivers Licence is required.
