The Chicago Public Library is celebrating Polish American Heritage Month by observing the culture, heritage, contributions and achievements of Polish Americans. During October, the public is invited to visit our locations, participate in and enjoy a variety of free programs, special events and exhibits that highlight significant contributions in science by Poles and Polish Americans. All programs are in English, unless otherwise specified. The Chicago Public Library’s 2009 Polish American Heritage Month Calendar of Events and other resources are available on our website at www.chicagopubliclibrary.org.

UROCZYSTE ROZPOCZĘCIE MIESIĄCA DZIEDZICTWA

In the Spirit of Ethnic Poland Please join us for the opening program which will be introduced by Joseph Zurawski, the author of Polish Chicago: Our History, Our Recipes. Following his introduction a spirited concert will be performed by the innovative Chicago group, The Megitza Quartet. The group was formed by vocalist/bassist Margaret Babiarz. Megitza’s music is influenced by Balkan and Brazilian music as well as from the flamenco and gypsy styles. As far as Poland itself is concerned, the band uses highlanders’ traditions of Margaret’s home village, Banska Wyzna, located in the Tatra Mountains of Southern Poland. Margaret herself is a composer and author of many songs which will be performed at the concert. She will be accompanied by Andreas Kapsalis on guitar, Marek Lichota on accordion/bayan, and Jamie Gallagher on drums. Zapraszamy do udziału w programie rozpoczynającym Miesiąc Dziedzictwa Polskiego. Po wysłuchaniu okolicznościowych powitań i krótkiej wypowiedzi Josepha Zurawskiego, autora książki Polish Chicago: Our History, Our Recipes (Polish Chicago: Nasza historia, nasze przepisy kulinarne), będziemy mieć okazję uczestniczenia w niezwykłym, pełnym pasji koncercie chicagowskiej grupy Megitza. Zespół bazuje na różnorodnych tradycjach muzycznych, takich jak muzyka Półwyspu Bałkańskiego, czy Brazylii. Można tu się także dopatrzeć wpływów flamenco i muzyki cygańskiej. Megitza odwołuje się również do polskiej muzyki góralskiej, jako że Małgorzata urodziła się i wychowała w miejscowości Banska Wyzna, w polskich Tatrach. Wiele piosenek znajdujących się w repertuarze grupy to utwory skomponowane i napisane przez solistkę. Małgorzacie Babiarz towarzyszyć będą: Andreas Kapsalis grający na gitarze, Marek Lichota na akordeonie i bayan oraz Jamie Gallagher na perkusji.

LECTURES WYKŁADY

The Contributions of the Polish American Architects to the Architectural Landscape of Chicago Voy Madeyski, a prominent Chicago architect, will discuss the contributions of Polish American architects, including Stan Gladych, Zbigniew Haszlakiewicz, Zbigniew Cianciara, Zbigniew Gorecki, Maria Lilien Czarnecka, Thomas Roszak, Wojciech Lesnikowski as well as the lecturer himself. Madeyski will not only focus on the works of those architects who were responsible for the designs of many interesting buildings, but also on their backgrounds and personal profiles. The lecture will be accompanied with slides. Voy Madeyski worked not only in the Chicago area, but also abroad. His many international assignments include buildings in the Middle East as well as in Southeast Asia. Here, in Chicago, his projects include the DoyleCumberland Rapid Transit Station, Bernard Mitchell Hospital (part of the University of Chicago medical complex), Amoco Plaza in Chicago (today AON), and others.

Wśród omówionych będą tacy architekci jak: Stan Gladych, Zbigniew Haszlakiewicz, Zbigniew Cianciara, Zbigniew Górecki, Maria Lilien Czarnecka, Thomas Roszak, Wojciech Leśnikowski oraz sam Wojciech Madejski. Wykładowca opowie nie tylko o dorobku swych kolegów i swoim, ale także o interesujących osobowościach architektów, o ich zmaganiach by wykonywać zdobyty w Polsce zawód i o tym, jakie trudności musieli przezwyciężyć, by zaistnieć na amerykańskim rynku pracy. Wykład będzie ilustrowany przeźroczami. Wojciech Madejski projektuje budynki nie tylko dla metropolii chicagowskiej. Z jego pracowni wyszło wiele projektów, ktore zostały wybudowane na Środkowym Wschodzie czy w Północno-Wschodniej Azji. Tu, w Chicago, zaprojektował m.in. Doyle-Cumberland stację szybkiej kolei wiodącej na lotnisko O’Hare, szpital Bernarda Mitchella dla University of Chicago, otoczenie Amoco Plaza w Chicago (dziś AON), itd.

This Polish American Life: Negotiating Self Among Others, a lecture by Professor John Merchant This talk will examine the various ways in which Polish American prose has developed as a response to and defense against the challenges posed by the multi-cultural encounters inherent to the American experience. In works by such writers as Anthony Bukoski, Stuart Dybek, Natalie L. M. Petesch, Leslie Pietrzyk, Denise Dee, Geraldine Glodek, and other emerging Polish American writers, the problem of identity, or Polishness, in the face of the vast, eviscerating indifference of the American cultural landscape emerges as a fundamental test. Diverse in style and geographic range, the prose of these writers is a testament to what the vitality and authenticity of the Polish American experience brings to the larger fabric of American life. Prof. J. Merchant has been involved with Poland and Polish studies for nearly twenty years, initially traveling to Poland in 1990 to work as a volunteer English teacher in a high school in Częstochowa, Poland. He has spent nearly four years in Poland as a teacher, student, and scholar and received an MA in Polish Literature from the

University of Illinois in Chicago in 1997 and a Ph. D. in Polish Literature from the University of Chicago in 2006. He currently teaches courses in literature and film, with a special emphasis on Polish literature, in the Department of Cinema and Comparative Literature at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, IA.

Polsko-amerykańskie życie: Zagadnienie narodowej tożsamości polskich emigrantów Prof. Merchant prześledzi różnorodne ścieżki rozwoju polsko-amerykańskiej prozy. Ewoluowała ona w odpowiedzi na wyzwania wielokulturowości charakterystycznej dla amerykańskich doświadczeń. Na przykładzie takich autorów jak: Anthony Bukoski, Stuart Dybek, Natalie L.M. Petesch, Leslie Pietrzyk, Denice Dee, Geraldine Glodek, wykładowca skupi się na zagadnieniu narodowej tożsamości potomków polskich emigrantów. Różnorodne pod względem stylu i geograficznych uwarunkowań, pisarstwo tych autorów jest świadectwem witalności i autentyzmu jakie wnoszą oni do tygla amerykańskiej rzeczywistości. Prof. Merchant jest związany z Polską i studiowaniem jej kultury przez niemal 20 lat. Po raz pierwszy pojechał do Polski w 1990 roku uczyć języka angielskiego w szkole średniej w Częstochowie. Przebywał w Polsce w sumie przez 4 lata ucząc języka angielskiego, studiując i wykładając. Otrzymał magisterium na UIC ze znajomości literatury polskiej w 1997 r. i doktorat z U of C w 2006 r. pisząc o wpływie literatury irlandzkiej na literaturę Młodej Polski. Dysertacja doktorska prof. Merchanta została opublikowana w 2008 r. Obecnie uczy on na kursach poświęconych literaturze i filmowi ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem literatury polskiej na University of Iowa.

Join historian, Prof. Dominic Pacyga of Columbia College, Chicago, as he traces our city’s storied past, from the exploration of Joliet and Marquette in 1673 to the new wave of urban pioneers today. Pacyga’s latest book, Chicago: A Biography, is filled with all of the city’s characters and defining moments. Presented in partnership with Columbia College, Chicago Matters, and CPL’s Polish American Services Committee. Refreshments and the drawing will be held at the closing book discussion on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, at the West Belmont Branch. Winners need not be present. Book Discussions in Polish: Dyskusje na temat książek w języku polskim

Dzień przed końcem świata – by Aleksander Jurewicz Powieść Jurewicza to kameralna historia oparta na osobistych przeżyciach autora. Rzeczywista akcja rozgrywa się w ciągu kilku dni od otrzymania wiadomości o śmierci ojca, poprzez przygotowanie i uczestniczenie w obrzędzie pogrzebowym. W międzyczasie bohater utworu przywołuje z pamięci różne fakty z przeszłości, np. traumę przesiedlenia z Białorusi do Polski, po II wojnie światowej a także proces przystosowania się do nowych warunków i okoliczności.

Aleksander Jurewicz’s novel, Dzień przed końcen świata (A day before the end of the world), is based on the author’s personal experience covering the time frame between finding out about his father’s death until the funeral. Recollections of his childhood experience include the difficulties his family experienced when they relocated from Belorussia to Poland following World War II. Monday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Balzakiana – by Jacek Dehnel Powieść Jacka Dehnela, Balzakiana, jest współczesną wersją 19 wiecznej Komedii Ludzkiej Honoriusza Balzaka osadzoną w rzeczywistości polskiej, w 21 wieku. Są tu elementy tragiczne i humorystyczne, jak w pierwowzorze. I okazuje się, że ludzkie charaktery nie zmieniły się tak bardzo w ostatnich stuleciach. Ludzkie słabości są wyjątkowo powtarzalne.

Jacek Dehnel’s novel, Balzakiana, presents a modern version of the 19th century La Comédie humaine (1830-1850) by Honore de Balzac. Dehnel takes Balzac’s work and sets it in present day Polish society. The novel is equal parts comedy and tragedy and it leaves the reader with the impression that people’s characters haven’t changed during the last centuries; we still have the same issues interacting with our fellow human beings. This story is set in communist Poland, and its title refers to an inexpensive car produced in East Germany. It tells the story of two girlfriends who try to renovate an old hotel which one of them inherited after the death of her aunt. They need to deal with the hotel staff’s poor performance, hungry guests, and people who would like them to fail. This book is a humorous story filled with gangsters and intrigue. The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman This book tells the true story of Warsaw Zoo director Jan Zabinski and his wife Antonina who sheltered over 300 Jewish and Polish refugees in both their villa and in the zoo’s animal cages during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The Zookeeper’s Wife is a story of the resiliency of the human spirit and the kindred bond fostered among the Zoo’s inhabitants. Diane Ackerman opowiada niesamowitą historię Jana Zabinskiego, dyrektora warszawskiego zoo i jego żony Antoniny. A Year’s Journey through Polish Traditions and Customs Poles around the world preserve their heritage by keeping alive traditions, celebrations, stories, myths, folklore, and songs of their homeland from one generation to the next. This

presentation will take you on a January through December calendar tour of Polish customs, celebrations and legends, inspired by Poland’s rich history. Mary Mirecki Piergies is the English Editor of Głos Polek, a bilingual publication of Polish Women’s Alliance of America. The Polish Women’s Alliance is a fraternal benefit society that was founded in Chicago in 1898 by women of Polish descent to preserve Polish language and culture.

Kalendarz polskich zwyczajów i tradycji Polacy, zarówno ci zamieszkali w kraju jak i za granicą są bardzo przywiązani do swego dziedzictwa kulturalnego poprzez przekazywanie tradycji, opowieści i pieśni z pokolenia na pokolenie. Program, który niniejszym przedstawiamy, pozwoli Państwu poznać obyczaje powtarzające się rokrocznie i zrozumieć przyczyny, dla których ukształtowały się one w ten a nie inny sposób. The Battle for Warsaw The Battle for Warsaw is a documentary produced by Wanda Koscia for the BBC “Timewatch” television series. The battle has been described as the single largest atrocity of the war and was the greatest and bloodiest military operation undertaken by any civilian resistance movement during World War II. The battle lasted for two months, and Nazi officials said they had seen nothing like it since Stalingrad. However in Stalingrad, they had faced a professional army with air support whereas in Warsaw, they were confronted “by some forty-thousand irregular volunteers led by a handful of professional soldiers, supported by children and civilians.” (from the BBC “Timewatch” program description) Wanda Koscia is a Producer/Director specializing in history and current affairs for the BBC. In 2005 she made this film about the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 (featuring an interview with her own mother who was a participant at age 16). The Battle of Warsaw was shown on Discovery Europe, the BBC, and recently featured this past July on WTTW, Channel 11, Chicago.

  Bitwa o Warszawę    Bitwa o Warszawę to dokumentalny film wyprodukowany przez Wandę Kościa dla telewizji BBC. Ta bitwa była określana jako największe okrucieństwo wojny i najbardziej krwawa operacja militarna przeprowadzona przez cywilny ruch oporu w czasie II wojny światowej. Powstanie trwało 2 miesiące i naziści stwierdzili, że nie było czegoś takiego od czasu Stalingradu, z tym że wówczas walczyli oni z wyszkolonymi żołnierzami. Tymczasem w Warszawie walczyli przeciwko 40 tysiącom cywili dowodzonych przez zawodowych żołnierzy, ale jednak cywili, wśród których dużo było dzieci. Wanda Kościa jest producentem i reżyserem specjalizującym się w problematyce historycznej i współczesnej. W 2005 r. wyprodukowała film o powstaniu warszawskim “ The Battle of Warsaw,” który to film był pokazany przez BBC w cyklu Odkrywanie Europy w lipcu tego roku na kanale 11 WTTW.

Legendary Polish Hero, Mr. Twardowski Barbara Niedorezo presents the story of Mr. Twardowski, a colorful character who wrestles with the devil himself! Afterwards, using colorful paper and glue, participants will create a collage based on their impressions of the main character. All materials will be provided by the presenter. Ages 5 & up. Registration is required – limit 20 participants. Legenda o panu Twardowskim Barbara Niedorezo zaprezentuje historię pana Twardowskiego, który wszedł w układ z samym diabłem. The Fisherman and the Golden Fish – Story and Sculpture Activity Participants will enjoy Barbara Niedorezo’s retelling of the classic fairy tale of the simple fisherman and the magic fish. Following the story, children will create a relief sculpture representation using salt dough and acrylic paint. Old clothing or T-shirts are recommended for younger children. All materials will be provided by the presenter. Ages 6 & up. Registration is required - limit 20 participants. He will certainly enhance the cooking skills of novices and veterans alike. At the Austin-Irving Branch he will prepare “kashubian pork” and herring appetizers, at the Brighton Park Branch – salmon with vegetables and blintzes, at Sulzer Regional Library – Hunter’s Stew and potato pancakes. Tasting will follow. Everyone is welcome! American Writers of Polish Descent Suggested Readings

Poland’s geographical location and the temperament of its people, combined with its history, have resulted in a literature that is unlike any other. Its literature has been a part of Poland’s identity during times of war, struggle, and exile. Its people have found comfort in what was perceived as the quintessentially Polish world, language and literature. When Poles emigrated to America, their love of literature came with them. First-generation immigrants usually were preoccupied with establishing themselves in a new country. They concentrated on the realities of day-to-day necessities such as providing for their children. Due to their hard work, the next generations frequently were able to devote more time to pursuits of the mind. The authors listed below are aware of their roots and their ties to this country. Their writings offer us, the readers, an opportunity to enter into this world of two dynamic cultures. Criteria for including authors on this list:  All selected are 20th and 21st century authors;  They write in English;  They reside in North America;  Their writings are in some way influenced by Polish culture, customs and/or traditions. Very often their writings deal with the problems of adapting to a new culture and at the same time honoring the old one. The selected works of these authors are part of the Chicago Public Library collection.
