Please Help Us Raise MUCH Needed Funds On July 21, the hottest day of the year, our shelter air conditioning unit decided to call it quits. Our unit in the main kennel area was totally out of service – the damage so bad that the unit melted the socket to the wall. We cannot say thank you enough to our wonderful partners at John’s Heating and Air Conditioning in Freeport who raced to the shelter to diagnose the problem.   After the problem was diagnosed, John’s did everything that they could to ensure a quick installation of our new system. Arriving at the shelter in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, July 24, John’s had a new unit for us and the animals were enjoying the cool air by the end of the day. We would also like to send a special thank you to Chelsie Schultz and Lower Burrell No. 3 for bringing exhaust fans to circulate the air as we waited for the new unit to be installed. A special thank you to the Westmoreland County Animal Response Team (CART) for their backup and efforts to find us extra portable units if needed.  A special thank you to everyone who spread the word about our needs and to everyone who donated to the air conditioning fund! The cost of our new unit was around $7,000.

So far we have raised $2900 – not bad – but we still have a long way to go to cover the costs of the new unit. Endolyn is an example of how Animal Protectors goes that extra mile to help animals in dire need.

It was a hot day in May when employees at a local bank saw Endolyn lying in the street, obviously in distress. Animal Protectors was called to action and swiftly responded. It was obvious that Endolyn had been hit by a car and was in shock when Animal Protectors arrived. His pupils were two different sizes and he was near death. He was immediately placed on IV steroids and warmed fluids, which stabilized him. The following week, he received surgery on his broken leg, which required placement of a pin. Endolyn’s initial life-saving treatment was done at the shelter at a rough cost of only $10, but the bone surgery needed to be done at a veterinary office. The bill for that surgery totaled $500. Since Endolyn’s

age is over 1 year, his adoption fee was a mere $50, just a fraction of what was spent to make him well. Many thanks to the caring employees at Citizen’s Bank in Leechburg who chose not to look the other way when seeing an injured animal and for making him comfortable until help arrived. Thanks also to the family that adopted Endolyn and welcomed him into their home.

“It’s Not Easy Being Me” Kermit has severe environmental and insect allergies – he is allergic to just about everything from peanut butter, wheat, and dairy to sunlight and bug bites. It’s a tough life to have, but Kermit always has a positive outlook, always presenting himself as an energetic pup. Kermit was originally adopted in the summer of 2010 with an agreement that his owners would bring Kermit back to the shelter regularly for allergy shots, vet visits and any other allergy medication that Kermit would need throughout his lifetime. Eventually, his owners learned how to give Kermit the medicine themselves and the care was in their hands. Unfortunately, Kermit’s owners gave him away in January and his new owners just could not care for him the way he required. In June, with Kermit’s medical information in hand, a Humane Agent brought him back to us, a scabby, uncomfortable, malnourished dog. Upon arrival at the shelter, Kermit’s ears were scratched raw and were bloody, his chest in the same condition. And he is now about 20 pounds underweight – Kermit’s current weight is about 59 pounds. We’d like to see him gain at least 20 pounds or more to be considered a healthy dog. The monthly cost of Kermit’s care is two times the amount of a “normal” shelter resident. His initial intake care was estimated to be around $500. He had many rounds of testing, medicated baths and medication. In order to put weight on Kermit and discourage allergic reactions, Kermit is on special food that costs roughly $50 per month. Monthly testing to monitor his allergies is around $75. Kermit also requires daily medication that costs around $40 per month. Kermit is available for adoption for the small fee of only $100. All of the care and medication he requires will be provided by the shelter. We estimate that it will cost us a minimum of $170 per month to keep Kermit’s allergies at a comfortable level. Won’t you help us help Kermit?

Proper Tick Removal What to do if you or a companion animal is bitten by a tick. Fall means yet another tick season, and veterinary practices throughout Western PA are reporting higher incidences of tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme Disease. While preventative measures are wise, tick checks and proper tick removal are key elements in reducing the risk of tick borne illnesses. u

Tick checks are key! Ticks prefer warm and dark areas such as under necks, under arms, groin, and belly.

u

Promptly remove ticks slowly straight out with fine-point tweezers or a special tickremoval tool, applied as close to the skin as possible. DO NOT squeeze the tick’s body or attempt to remove it with your fingers.

u

u

DO NOT apply heat, alcohol, petroleum jelly/Vaseline, peroxide, or any other substance to the area before the tick is removed; aggravating a tick in this way may cause it to regurgitate into the bloodstream, increasing chances for infection.

u

Antiseptics can be used on the site of a tick bite AFTER the tick has been removed.

u

You can save the tick in a sealed plastic bag or a small bottle. Show the tick to your doctor or veterinarian to aid in the identification process. Some human and animal doctors will prescribe antibiotics as a preventative measure.

Monitor the area for skin irritation or rashes, though the absence of a rash does not guarantee a tick borne illness hasn’t been spread.

u

Be wary of symptoms such as cold/flu, weakness, joint pain or swelling, poor appetite, and lethargy.

Onions and garlic may be bad for your pet. It happens all the time. We finish our dinner and either put the plate down for the dog to lick up the remnants or our cat jumps up and takes over from where we left off. Now if you’re an animal lover that’s fine with this type of behavior you might think that whatever leftover our animal companion is eating is fine because they seem to like it. Unfortunately this is not always the case. A cat or dog’s judgment isn’t always up to par with ours, and frankly, if it tastes good, then why not eat it? Most of us have heard that chocolate is a big nono when it comes to both cats and dogs. But did you know that onions and garlic fit in that category? You may find that some animal treats have small traces of these bulbs in them. So how much is too much? According to the ASPCA Poison Control Center there isn’t an exact science to this answer. Instead, it’s suggested that we avoid giving them to our animal companions altogether. Luckily we won’t need to worry about Fido or Kitty digging in the garden for these delectables anytime soon; after all, they aren’t that desirable. There are, however, other foods that might be more attractive to a cat or dog’s sense of smell and taste. Here are a few that should be kept away from our friends at all times: Coffee, yeast dough, macadamia nuts, alcohol, salt and fatty foods not to mention human medication. When in doubt, just stick with the food that you’ve bought your animal companion and you’ll have less to worry about. If you can, try to clean off your own plate because not only could there be food on it that may harm your cat or dog, but enough cleaning up after their human friends will put on extra weight and that’s a whole other story about animal health. An overweight animal can get heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions that we humans get when we don’t take care of ourselves. In Loving Memory of People... Skunk Rinse Recipe Did your dog or cat ever encounter a skunk? If so, you know how the scent lingers. We have had several people tell us that the following recipe is far more effective than the old tomato juice cure, and it’s easy to follow. In a pail mix: 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide variety) ¼ cup baking soda 2 teaspoons Dawn dishwashing liquid If you have a large breed dog, you may need to double, triple or even quadruple the mixture. It is recommended that you wear dishwashing or other household gloves during the whole deskunking process. Don’t wet down your pet. Apply the mixture to your pet’s dry coat from the collar back toward the tail. Don’t pour it near the eyes because the hydrogen peroxide solution can burn them. Lather the mixture into your pet’s coat and skin. Rub the solution around for about five minutes or until the skunk smell starts to dissipate. If the front of your pet is as stinky as the back, use a sponge to apply the solution to your pet’s chin, cheeks, forehead and ears, being very careful not to go near the eyes. When you rinse the head area, tilt your pet’s chin upward so the solution does not run down into the eyes, instead allow the water to run back off his neck. Do a complete rinse once the smell starts to decrease, then repeat the entire process again. You may need to repeat the lather and rinse process up to three times, but it’s a very effective method for removing the skunk smell from your pet. Make sure to completely rinse the solution off your pet. Your final rinse should be very thorough. You can’t prepare this solution ahead of time and store it – it won’t be effective when you need it. It must be made fresh, right before you apply it to your pet. So it pays to make sure you have all the ingredients ahead of time! Keep the ingredients in a place that you will remember when your pet comes home, reeking of skunk. We hope you never have to use the skunk rinse recipe, but keep it nearby, just in case.
