YOUNG LEARNERS SESSIONS 9.00 – 10.00

LET'S MAKE A MOVE! – YLE SPEAKING This seminar will look at some ideas how to improve your student's speaking abilities through easy to set up activities with little or no preparation time. The activities will be aimed at and connected to the different parts of the YLE Movers speaking exam, but can of course be adapted for the Starter and Flyer exams. Anette Igel

10.15 – 11.15

AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR YLE This session deals with activities which are based on authentic materials. The activities focus on Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing tasks in the form of games, communicative tasks and projects. You can use them not only to prepare your students for the Young Learners exams, but also as fun and extra resources in your non-exam classes. Soňa Pazderová

GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY FUN - YLE Do your students need more practice? Are gap fills not enough? In this session we'll look at some ideas about how to make grammar and vocabulary teaching more interesting, fun and communicative for your students, so that they actually remember something. Anette Igel

MATURITA SESSIONS 9.00 – 10.00

READING BEYOND THE COURSEBOOK How using a combination of extensive and intensive approaches can make reading personal and interesting for students. Recent research and practical experience has shown that these approaches help students not just with their reading but also all their other language skills. We will discuss ways of motivating students to read in class and at home, choosing the right book and possible follow up activities and projects. Although useful for the Maturita exam, everything in this session is equally applicable to general teaching. Eva Trňáková

10.15 – 11.15

TECHNOLOGY HELPS NOT HINDERS Simple approaches, using power point or similar presentation programs in the classroom. You will get ideas for many ready-made or simple to create activities to help with presentation and revision. Participants will see and discuss how these materials can be used for teaching all aspects of the language and culture. Materials will be primarily based on preparing for Maturita, but can be useful for any topics and levels. Eva Trňáková

11.30 – 12.30

LONG TURN SPEAKING This focuses on part three of the new Maturita exam, where students have to speak for five minute on a factual topic. Is there anything we can do for our students besides presenting them with long texts full of facts on English speaking countries or lists of thematically linked

13.30 – 14.30

MATURITA GRAMMAR Grammar exercises are often without any context and students practice only very little language in the time given. Come and see some methods to practice grammar in a different way. Learn some new drills which your students will like. Zdeněk Rotrekl

14.45 – 15.45

VOCABULARY FOR MATURITA We elicit the new vocabulary at the beginning of nearly every lesson. But there are times when we need our students to know 20 or even more new words. So we ask the students to learn them as their homework. But students do not like their homework. So we need some methods to teach a lot of words quickly. Come and learn some. Zdeněk Rotrekl

CAMBRIDGE KET AND PET SESSIONS 9.00 – 10.00

TOP MARKS, ACTIVITIES & THE NEW CRITERIA - KET/PET WRITING What do KET writing part 9 and PET writing part 2 exam tasks have in common and how do they differ? While analysing and marking some samples of KET and PET exam writing, we are going to focus on improving ready-made low-scoring messages and making our students aware of what to do and what to avoid in order to gain top marks for these KET/PET writing tasks. We are also going to look at the new descriptions of criteria for marking these writing tasks (2012 handbooks). Hana Babincová

10.15 – 11.15

SELF DISCOVERY IN SPEAKING - KET/PET SPEAKING In this presentation we are going to look closely at the two parts of KET and PET speaking exams which are usually the most difficult ones for

We are going to try out some fun and creative activities we can use in lessons to lead our KET/PET students to their own discoveries about these speaking exam tasks and thus help them better prepare for their exams. Hana Babincová

11.30 – 12.30

SUCCESS AT PET & KET LISTENING This session will focus on pre-listening strategies that help students identify the tasks and predict the desired answers to the listening questions. Thus, if the time before the actual listening is used productively, it maximizes students’ listening focus and helps them achieve good scores. Would you like to know what differences there are between KET and PET listening papers? Come and try it out. Pavla Milerski

13.30 – 14.30

USING AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR KET/PET EXAMS Are your students preparing for KET or PET? Are they ready for a change in their routine? This seminar will give you some practical ideas how to use easily available authentic materials (audio, video, text, visual materials…) to practise for the exam tasks and do something reallife at the same time. Soňa Pazderová

CAMBRIDGE FCE AND CAE SESSIONS 10.00 – 11.00

BUILDING CONFIDENCE - FCE SPEAKING PREPARATION ACTIVITIES, Discourse Management, Interactive Communication… What does it all entail? How do I prepare my students for the speaking paper so that their performance is highly successful? 3 THINGS TO FOCUS ON – FCE WRITING We will focus on three most important aspects of writing for the FCE exam. Firstly, it will be the marking criteria and how they can help improve students' performance, then the exam formats and finally we will be dealing with problems students have with writing in general. Regina Jiránková

11.30 – 12.30

INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES - FCE USE OF ENGLISH Everyone knows that ‘Use of English’ is just a fancy term for ‘the grammar bit’. Here is a selection of activities that will take away the ‘gap-fill/grammar’ aspect of this part of the exam, and make it more interactive and, hopefully, less dry! David Szmidt

13.30 – 14.30

NO TIME TO WRITE? – CAE WRITING We will focus on some important aspects of CAE writing. In the first part, we will analyze the marking criteria and use them in practice to mark students' writing and in the second part we will discuss the means teachers can use to improve students' writing during a limited time span. Regina Jiránková

14.45 – 15.45

DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION – FCE/CAE LISTENING Distracters are a big part of the Cambridge exams and both you and your students need to recognise them and how to overcome them. In this session, “Listening without listening”, we will be students, teachers and examiners as we go through a lesson in order to work out how the devious minds of Cambridge examiners operate . MYENGLISHLAB – NEW

TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE YOUR WORK MORE

EFECTIVE

Have you ever felt annoyed with having piles and piles of workbooks to correct on your desk? Do your students lack motivation and enthusiasm to do their homework? Let’s take step by step journey into MyEnglishLab online components and see how these problems could be tackled. We will take a closer look at diagnostic tools the component offers, including the Grade Book and the Common Error Report, as well as the electronic workbook. You will also get the chance to see how motivating working with MyEnglishLab is for your students. Demonstration on how easy it is to work with this component is part of the presentation. Magdaléna Benešová, Bohemian Ventures

10.15 – 11.15

EXAM SMILES - MAKING EXAM PREPARATION FUN. What kind of Exam teacher are you? Do you believe the only way to pass an exam is to do hours of exam practice or do you think that as long as your students know English they will do okay in the Exam. In this session we will discuss the best way to approach exam preparation and then look at some practical activities that make teaching and learning in Exam classes fun. Gareth Davies, Oxford University Press

11.30 – 12.30

TEACH NOT TEST: PREPARING LEARNERS FOR FCE AND BEYOND This seminar sets out to show that the teaching skills of a competent teacher are far more valuable in exam preparation than continual testing. We will consider what these skills are and how a teacher can use them to prepare students for all the components of the FCE exam. Drawing on the presenter’s own extensive experience with exam preparation for international exams (IELTS, PET, FCE, inter alia) and writing test booklets providing exam practice for the Macmillan Gateway series, the seminar will offer practical teaching tips and demonstrate learner training activities that lead to the development of effective exam and study skills, helping the teacher grow more confident and the learner more autonomous. WHAT DO YOU THINK? What do you think? is often the hardest question we can ask our students. Asking students to think for themselves can be an alien concept. But a student who can open their minds is a student that can learn. In this session we will look at what critical thinking is and why it is important to help students develop their critical thinking skills when preparing for English Language exams.
