our SG perspective CEO's message

curator's perspective

As the weather starts to change and we welcome cooler, crisp days, I can’t help but reflect on my first summer at Station Gallery. SG was humming with activity – giggles from the campers could be heard throughout the gallery – and every day felt like a new adventure.

What a year – and it’s not over yet! For me, 2016 continues to shine with a brilliance and spirit of curiosity that rolls into 2017. Together, we’ve embraced creativity in our midst, with Jessica Field's technological installations, Drawing for Art, sharply astonishing realist paintings in Keeping it Real, exuberant teen spirit in High School Confidential and fantastic output from the SG studios in The Community Exhibition 2016: What's the Big Idea?

SG's Wave Summer Music was a smashing success! We even broke a record in July when Whitby’s own Annie Sumi and Little Ole Dumplings played. There were over 170 people in attendance!

While fostering local and regional talent, SG also provides a window onto the cultural landscape beyond our region. This fall, we’ll feature a photography exhibition that explores the ways people with spina bifida inhabit their bodies. Spina Bifida – Front to Back by Toronto-based photographer Steve Kean is a moving suite of paired images with text. Kean celebrates each individual voice in his series, uncovering the beauty of human form with his camera.

The summer exhibitions also kept community spirit alive. High School Confidential was a crowd-sourced exhibit that showcased artwork made during high school. Five decades of art were represented in this fun show. In the heritage galleries, The Community Exhibition 2016: What’s the Big Idea? featured artwork created in SG's studios and outreach programs this past spring. What a thrill to see the creativity of program participants shine! Speaking of shining, the Whitby Youth Council's Art Attack selections in the yourSpace community gallery showcased incredible art created by youth in our community.

Later in the fall, people will have a chance to immerse themselves in the paintings of Anong Migwans Beam. An accomplished painter in her own right, Anong descends from an honoured lineage of artist parents Ann and Carl Beam. The fluid poetry of Anong's mesmeric canvases swell with memories and passages of an underwater realm.

The momentum isn’t slowing down any time soon. This fall is packed with events – some new, some returning – that will keep SG buzzing with activity. The Holiday House Tour returns for its 27th year on Saturday, November 12. This annual tradition will feature some of Durham Region's most unique homes, all decked out for the holidays, plus a stop at SG where tour-goers can sample delicious local treats.

Along with artists Kean and Beam, artistic output from several local groups will be on display. SG Rocks highlights eight sculptors, all of whom carve a place in the regional scene. The UOIT/Durham College Art Club will present vibrant artistic offerings. Celebrating fifty years in Durham Region, Ajax Creative Arts will mark festivities with an exhibit in the yourSpace community gallery. In the artCube, Liz Menard's breathtaking handcut and etched paper leaves will be on display. Finally, we’ll round out the year with the annual members’ exhibition, with Glimpse as the theme.

As for new events, SG is excited for ARToberfest on Friday, September 30, which will feature a variety of local brews, delicious food and good times. Together, we are SG. I hope you’ll join in the fun and spend time at your community gallery.

Autumn 2016 promises a full range of colours, values, ideas and experiences. Drop by and say hello – you’re always welcome here.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

Kerri King Chief Executive Officer

Steve Kean, Sujit-Spina Bifida Front to Back, 2015, inkjet print

Photographer Steve Kean’s project Spina Bifida – Front to Back is as much about the dignity of people as it is about the condition. It is about how people with spina bifida inhabit their bodies. For each subject, Kean produces two images – a traditional portrait on a white background to introduce the viewer to the person, and a second image of the person's back. Kean, who also has spina bifida, started this project in 2013. The photographs are not meant to explain spina bifida, but to explore the beauty, strength and humanity of the people in the images. Steve says, “For the first time in my artistic practice, I am examining how people like me, who live with this condition, view themselves and seek to claim their power and beauty.”

This Permanent Collection exhibition takes its cue from the famed parlour game. Through questions and answers, the game creates odd technicalities and combinations that fit with either animal, mineral or vegetable. Animal, Mineral, Vegetable showcases works from the Collection that fall somewhere within those three categories.

As children, many of us collected pretty stones on the beach, only to be disappointed when they lost their vibrant colour. As adults, we walk past brown slabs of rock, unaware of the beauty contained within. The works in SG Rocks (the name selected by the group of artists) release the spirit and colour found within stone. You’ll never look at rocks the same way again!

She was raised on Manitoulin Island with a meaningful connection to both her artistic familial roots and rich ancestral heritage. Her work deals primarily with water and its relation to the functions of memory and time. Beam’s immersive, large-format oil paintings incorporate a multitude of image making approaches, including photo transfer, collage and printmaking. SG stories celebrating art in our community What an incredible event! Drawing for Art, SG's annual spring fundraiser, was a huge success. The galleries were packed with a sold-out crowd of arts and culture lovers. Drawing for Art raises vital funds that help support SG's community education programs. Thank you to the artists who generously donated work and to the incredible volunteers, including the Rotary Club of Whitby, who bring this event to life. Thanks also to Veridian Corporation, RioCan Management Inc., Steam Whistle Brewing, Farm & Wild Catering and Apex Sound & Light for sponsoring and supporting Drawing for Art 2016. And of course, thank you to everyone who purchased tickets. Your support keeps art thriving in our community!

SG stories a work of art to cherish In April, while the Drawing for Art exhibition was on display, a young boy named Ethan came to SG to take art classes for the first time. Before his class started, he always looked at the exhibit, but was drawn to one piece in particular. Whenever Ethan was here, he’d go right to a piece called Helmet by long-time volunteer Henry. Ethan loves all things related to the military, police and firefighters. The helmet, painted with a scene honouring Canada’s veterans, fascinated him. At the end of the Drawing for Art event, when people can purchase the remaining works, someone (shhh, they wish to remain anonymous!) who knew Ethan loved Helmet lined up and bought it for him. A few days later, Ethan received the news that he was the proud new owner of the piece of art he cherished so much. He was was thrilled! What a great example of the joy art brings to people of all ages in our community.

taking creativity beyond the gallery walls

exploring big ideas in culture

SG offers a variety of art programs in our community. One long-standing partnership is the art therapy class SG delivers to patients in the Continuing Complex Care unit at Lakeridge Health Whitby. Susan Rabiniak, BSc, T.R. Cert, Therapeutic Recreation Assistant, shared this about the program:

Innovative school programs are an important part of Station Gallery. Unique, “outside the box” sessions make SG a destination must for teachers across Durham Region and beyond. From January to June 2016, SG welcomed over 1,500 students. The Media Mania program was a runaway success, representing over 50% of the winter and spring sessions!

“Having worked alongside patients in this program, I have seen the tremendous mental changes that occur. The hands-on aspect lets patients relax and think differently, giving them an opportunity to work through struggles they may be experiencing, such as decreased physical or mental abilities, depression and anxiety. It also helps some patients deal with feelings of loneliness, which is beneficial to the patients and their families.

It is with some sadness, but also excitement, that after three years of Media Mania madness, we're putting it on the shelf to make way for an exciting new program Culture: Yours and Mine. This session delivers the energy, Big Ideas, media awareness, global relevance, critical thinking and quirky collaborative activities that both teachers and students have come to love and expect from SG. In the studios, students create a spectacular piece of mixed media artwork reflective of their personal contribution to Canada’s diverse culture.

Some patients have even chosen to display their work, while others are proud to give it as gifts to their loved ones. Since being a part of this program, I have received great feedback from the patients and their families.”

This fall, teachers and students can look forward to engaging new sessions as well as the favourites they have grown to know and love!

A similar program is now being offered at Fairview Lodge in Whitby. SG is excited to bring positive artistic experiences to residents at this location!
