4 Grade: Earth Science
Lesson Plan Summary
Students will conduct research on the Solar System as well as learn the order of the planets from the sun. They will create a concept map to help them gain knowledge and understanding of this topic. Once information is gathered, students will create a movie of their own to show their understanding of the Solar System.
Learning Objectives
Students will understand the makeup of the solar system and how it was formed. Students will learn that the sun, planets, and moons are parts of the solar system. Students will learn that the sun is the main source of energy for everything on the earth. Students will learn that gravity is the force that keeps planets in orbit around the sun. Students will understand that most objects in the solar system are in regular and predictable motion. Those motions explain time concepts of days and years.
Assessment Instrument Rubric for Movie Checklist for Concept Map
Planets of Our Universe: 4th Grade Georgia Performance Standards Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and Elements S4E1 Students will compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars, star patterns, and planets Students will compare the similarities and differences of planets to the stars in appearance, position, and number in the night sky. Identify how technology is used to observe distant objects in the sky. S4E2 Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon. Demonstrate the relative size and order from the sun of the planets in the solar system
National Educational Technology Standards (for teachers & students) National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS for Teachers) Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers: Design or adapt relevant learning experience that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS for Students) Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students: Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project
Planets of Our Universe: 4th Grade Prerequisite Skills Content-Wise: How many planets there are Acknowledge the fact that we live in a Universe Technology-Wise: Keyboard Skills How to use: o PowerPoint o Windows Movie Maker o Windows Media Player
Procedures Hook/Anticipatory Set: “Who has heard of the Milky Way…and I’m not talking about the candy bar?” 1.
Students will go to a website to learn more about the planets and see an interactive video on how the planets rotate around the sun. http://www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm
2. 3. 4.
Students may take notes about the planets and begin thinking about how they want to create their video Students will create a concept map showing they understand and know the order of the planets from the sun. Students will create their own video using Window Movie Maker on The Solar System. They may choose to do a video on: The order of the Planets from the Sun One Planet of their choice Rotation of the Planets Once students decide on their topic of choice for their video, they will begin to create their movie. Movies must include pictures. Students will use PowerPoint to create their text/narration for the video.
5.
Closure: Students will share their videos to the class
Accommodation Options ELL / Special Needs Students
An example/Step by Step Sheet will be provided whether it is written or read aloud. Students who have trouble typing may record their voice instead or make a podcast.
Highly-Capable Students
Students will record their voice with or instead of using text narration
Physical Contexts Arrangement One-computer classroom Multiple computers
Rationale
Planets of Our Universe: 4th Grade Computer lab
Students will be gathering research during the lesson as well as creating a movie; therefore, it will be easier for the teachers and students to be involved and assisted at any time. It will make communication more accessible.

Integrating the Learning Goals from Egbert’s SLwT Learning Goal
How this Lesson Addresses this Goal
Critical Thinking (Ch 4)
The experiences provided by this lesson allow students to reinforce content as well as vocabulary and prior knowledge to complete the lesson and relate it to the course.
Problem-solving (Ch 6)
In this lesson, student communication is encouraged through the use of the communication technology of Windows Movie Maker and/or their Podcast. Although students do not publish their work, they are able to share and show their classmates their finished product.
