Local firefighters put on alert over forest fires “What they are looking to us for is support for the local fire department in La Ronge,” - Pilot Butte Fire Chief Kevin Dell.

L
ocal fire teams are now “on alert” status. As over 100 forest fires continue to burn in northern Saskatchewan, local volunteer firefighters have been asked to help the community of La Ronge. “What they are looking to us for is support for the local fire department in La Ronge,” Pilot Butte Fire Chief Kevin Dell said. The firefighters will not be sent out into the blazing bush to fight the forest fires, but will be working within their wheelhouse keeping the northern Town as safe as they can. “They are utilizing the local volunteer departments for what they’re trained on. Of course, down here, most of us don’t get into the forest fire type of situations. So they’re looking for support on structures and that type of thing in La Ronge,” Dell said. Equipment from the various departments will be taken up and offered in support of fire fighting efforts as requested or needed. Firefighters will use personal vehicles to get themselves up to the area. Will there be compensation for the fire departments for their work and use of local equipment? “Not 100 per cent all worked out yet,” Dell said, “We’re on a learning curve with this as well. In all my years I’ve never been in this situation where we’ve been asked to support somebody like that.” Dell, White City Fire Chief Darrell Liebrecht and Balgonie Fire Chief Dave Campbell stressed that proper coverage of the home communities would be in place if and when members of the Pilot Butte, White

City/Emerald Park and Balgonie fire departments go north. “We’re not going there yet,” Liebrecht said, and was proud of the volunteers willing to go. “They will take time off of work to go,” he said. Liebrecht said the call went out for help from volunteer fire departments around the province and he understood six to seven other volunteer departments closer to the area have already been put to work. “Now it’s just a matter of waiting it out,” he said of when and if locals will get the call. members of the Balgonie firefighting team have volunteered and they have offered use of equipment: the Rural Municipality of Edenwold’s grass truck and unit 17, the department’s 2012 Rosenbauer. “It can be an engine, it can be a pump, it can be a wild-line unit, it can be a tanker shuttle,” Campbell said of the multi-use purposes of the vehicle. Several villages including Wadin Bay,
Montreal Lake and Pinehouse Lake are also in danger from fire. “They would marshal in Prince Albert, receive their assignment based on the recommendation coming out of La Ronge,” said Commissioner of Emergency Management and Fire Safety with the Ministry of Government Relations, Duane McKay of where volunteer firefighters may be sent, “so we have a district operation centre there that is looking after all of the areas from Grandmother Bay to Montreal Lake, north and south of La Ronge and they would be given an assignment. The assignment would be based upon their capabilities, what is required and also making sure we can actually house and look after them as well.” McKay spoke to media about the fire situation during a teleconference July 8. “And really that’s what their assignment is, is community protection,” McKay said and explained firefighters would contain any fires started and monitor “small growth areas, grass and brush in [and] around the community, that may spot overtop of the fire guards. He detailed how communities have been divided into sectors and firefighters will be assigned sectors to monitor and will be moved around as needed. McKay acknowledged Redhead Equipment who has provided two mechanics to service tankers and other equipment being used to battle flames.
Collision at Highway 46 and Highway 1 at Balgonie
Balgonie Fire Department used Jaws of Life to extract patients MICHELLE NICHOLSOn
O
n July 2 at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Balgonie Fire Department and First Responders were called out to an accident at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 46. The two-vehicle collision resulted when a car with Manitoba plates driving west collided with an SUV travelling east attempting to turn north to access Highway
364. The occupants in the SUV are believed to be from northern Saskatchewan. “All patients were extracted using the Jaws of Life,” Balgonie Fire Chief Dave Campbell said. The status of the occupants are unknown as of press time. EMS, STARS air ambulance and the RCMP were on scene, a re-constructionist was on site and will be completing a report as to the cause of the accident.

Lightning strikes White City home MICHELLE NICHOLSOn
T
he dogs may not ever fully recover. Well, Beau might, but definitely not Molly. On Saturday, July 4, a storm brought heavy rains and lightning through the area. At approximately 10:20 a.m., a house on Zatylny Crescent in White City was hit by lightning. Megan Koback, 21, was at home with her two dogs, Beau and Molly. Of the family of four, only Megan and the dogs were home at the time. “I was sitting in the kitchen with my dogs. All of the sudden it sounded like there was a gun shot right by my ear,” Koback said of the incident, “At the time that this happened there was a huge, white flash all around my house. I was watching TV, the TV looked like it got too powered up and also did a big flash and then everything powered out.” The dogs were terrified. The smell of smoke filled the house and the smoke alarms were set off, but the elec-
trical system for the home was hard wired in and quickly quieted. Koback went to check the top floor of the home. In one of the bathrooms she saw one of the light switch plates had shot from the wall, landing across the room and laid burnt on the floor. She believes no fire engulfed the home due to the heavy rain. The lightning strike charred a two-foot hole in the roof. That side of the roof of the house will be replaced as will a large portion of the homes electrical. “We are very lucky because both my sister and my dad have friends who own an electrical company and a roofing company so they are being very kind to us and actually that same morning someone was able to come and cover up our roof so if it rained again nothing would come in,” said Koback. Unlike the dogs, she’s not afraid of the next storm. “It’s neat to see what nature can do,” she said.

The offering of items was as eclectic as the mix of people who attended the auction. The Kronau Heritage Museum committee has been working with the auction company for “three or four years,” said committee member Rhonda Lamb. The group hosts the concessions on auction sites to raise funds for the museum. “Helping us out, helps them out,” Lamb said.

OPINION

T
he recent Greek referendum reaffirms Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ mandate of anti-austerity with 61% voting against the harsh terms offered by the Eurozone for a bailout. This could likely result in a Greek default. Anti-austerity has been a popular platform for Tsipras and it is clear to see why. Government cutbacks have not been working. For the last five years and the Greek economy has taken a major hit. IMF studies have revealed that without a major influx of cash, much more than debt repayment, the Greek economy is likely to slide further. If Greece defaults they may be forced out of the European Economic Community, be required to give up the Euro and start printing Drachmas again. The EEC is a separate group from the European Union, which is more political and less economic in nature. So a Greek default is not at all likely to cause the downfall of the European Union as some have suggested. Yet is likely to cause major problems in the EEC, particularly for the Germans, who own the lion’s share of Greek debt. If Greek Drachmas return they will be highly devalued, causing Greek exports to become cheap. There is an economic principle, Greshams law, that applies here. Basically it states that bad money drives out good. Which in the Greek case means foreign investment (Euros and Dollars) will flee the country in proportion to how much the Drachma is devalued, which could be quite a lot. Neither options are great for Greece, but starting to print Drachmas again gives them at least a measure of control over their economy that if they stay with the Euro.

ne of the advantages of living in a small town is that no matter where in town you’re going, you could walk there. It might help address your problems. Be a little better today than you were yesterday, but don’t obsess about any particular metric. Gradual changes you maintain are better than enormous changes you don’t. If the continuous improvement in your mood, energy, and overall health isn’t enough to keep you interested in staying fit there are more drastic options. Gophers causing hazards for White City homeowners MICHELLE NICHOLSOn
L
yle Weichel, his wife and a neighbour arrived at White City council Tuesday, June 30 to discuss their trouble with gophers. Weichel lives on Emerald Ridge East and told council during this drier year, the gophers have become a “bigger issue,” their numbers greatly increased over the wet years that have come before. The abundant numbers of rodents are chewing new trees and digging up yards. “It is also a concern for safety for kids and pets with the number of gopher holes,” Weichel told council. He also expressed concern that people walking at night may find themselves twisting an ankle in an unseen gopher hole. The Town of White City does not have an official pest control policy but homeowners are permitted to manage pest control in their own yards. Weichel and the mayor discussed how adjacent uncultivated or non-landscaped spaces to yards are breeding grounds for the gophers that then make their way into homeowner’s spaces. In preparation for his appearance at council, Weichel had contacted other communities, including Vibank to find out how they manage pest
control and found they use a contractor. He then asked, “if the council could consider that?” and said he did not want to upset neighbours who may have different sensitivities about pest control. Weichel’s wife Lindsay expressed disappointment there was no official pest control policy for the Town. “I think if we were to adopt a policy it would have to be community wide,” Mayor Evans said and not just for the area where Weichel lives. Manager of Public Works, Gary Schmidt said he’d investigated the issue and had found a product called Gopher Doom. For a cost of $140.75 and the time of one staff member for a day, gopher burrows around the entire Town could be treated. The product does not harm other animals that may eat the carcasses of the dead gophers, Schmidt said. Council agreed to a motion to pursue the gopher control option put forward by Schmidt and after a council vote the motion was carried. “We will receive calls from people who think it’s inhumane,” Schmidt said “but the number of calls from people who will be in favour [of this solution] will outweigh that.” Gopher control has begun as of July 6 in the Town.

RM has to do some paperwork to transfer lagoons MICHELLE NICHOLSOn
A
fter an asset valuation and discussions with White City, the Rural Municipality (RM) of Edenwold and the Town of White City agreed to transfer lagoon land to the WCRM158 Wastewater Management Authority (WCRM158 WMA). June 1, Town council passed a resolution “that the asset and liability of Parcel L Plan 96R72416 be transferred to the WCRM158 Wastewater Management Authority for the value of $1.00.” However, because the RM land sits under an MR (municipal reserve) zoning designation, the municipality will have to rezone the land, having the municipal reserve designation removed. For that to happen, steps have
to be followed, first reading was given at the June 23 council meeting. Advertising the zoning change will happen next followed by a public hearing, second and third reading of the motion and approval by Community Planning. The RM had the land zoned MR under section 192 of the Municipal Planning Act and money from the RM’s municipal reserve account was used to purchase the land to put lagoons on it. Fair value for the land is pegged at $240,000 according to the asset valuation. The RM will sell the land to WCRM158 WMA for one dollar and move revenue from the RM’s general reserve account to their municipal reserve account. The transfer of assets ensures an equal partnership between the Town and the RM.

Balgonie Canada Day celebration brings big crowds A member of the Kiel’s Traveling Big Band float. Photo by Michelle Nicholson.
The Balgonie Elks hosted a full Canada Day Family Fun Day with a packed schedule of events, the pancake breakfast being just the beginning.
There were so many people at the pancake breakfast, they ran out of syrup and people ran home to bring back enough to share. The estimated count at the pancake breakfast saw 355 people coming through the doors of the Balgonie Multiplex to get their Canada Day morning carb load on. MP Andrew Scheer and MLA Don McMorris were on hand to serve before the food ran out.
The parade which followed featured several floats, including some from local businesses: Balgonie Agencies, Parkland Riding Club, the Balgonie Curling Club, Kiels Travelling Big Band, the RM of Edenwold’s Community Safety Officers and local fire departments from not only Balgonie, but also Pilot Butte and White City/ Emerald Park. The show and colours of antique cars, fiddlers, horses and candy being tossed to happy kids made for a fun event. Ty Fairley and Liam Hutton took time to chalk up a picture of the Canadian Flag on the parade route at Hawkes

Unfortunately, the flypast by members of Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw scheduled for 12:30 p.m. was cancelled due to forest fire smoke.
“They cancelled it because they didn’t have enough visibility,” Trevor Kiel of the Elks said, “they needed three miles [of visibility] and had two.”

Dog show delights & face painting
The Encore dog show obstacle course set up adjacent to the beer gardens and food tents drew a big crowd of onlookers as 14 dogs were put through the paces. This was the second year Encore, a training and dog sports company out of Regina known for their demo events, had been out for Balgonie’s Canada Day celebration.
Of the nine handlers who took the dogs through the course, Diane Trefiak was one whom was glad the weather held. “Last year we had the puddle and we were moving slow, everyone was slipping,” she said of last year’s course.
Face painters did a brisk business on Main Street. Cohen Harris sat patiently awaiting his transformation into the cartoon character The Joker.
“I want to be the same as Cohen!” his little brother Calder called out to Mom and Dad, who waited in line.
Bed Derby trophies found
Members of the Balgonie Elks made a great discovery. They found the original Bed Derby trophies.
“25 years ago was the last time those things saw the light of day,” Trevor Kiel said as he sat under the Bed Derby sign up tent. His brother Darren indicated they had been found in “in the Multiplex, in one of the backrooms.” There are plans to add additional bases to the trophies so there is space for winner’s names.
What’s Canada Day without good food?
This year the Balgonie Elks increased the number of food tents. The Balgonie Early Learning Centre hosted a hamburger tent, The Diner hosted a perogy tent (with dry ribs and homemade beef sausage) and Susan Stiefel of Susan and Penni Catering was serving up beef on a bun. “We did it for the Balgonie Elks,” said Stiefel of her decision to participate. Lisa Muir held down the fort at The Diner’s food tent. “We had 100 or more,” she said of the noon time crowd she and Christian Witkowski and J.D. Muir served. “We’ve never had three before,” said Elk Darren Kiel, “it just worked awesome.”
The mega phone announcement that Licksapolooza was offering free ice cream created and instant queue. “It’s just a way to give back to the community for a year of service,” ice cream store Owner Leanne Riley said of the 400 cones she and her team scooped out. Licksapolooza was also one of the Bed Derby sponsors.
On your mark, get set, go…
Competition was good between the 10 teams who competed in the “second annual” Bed Derby. The derby has a storied history in the community, being brought back by the Elks in 2014 after a 30-plus year hiatus. Of the derby race teams, the three best poker hands ended up being held by: Fidelity Fitness, Barons and the Balgonie Elks (a.k.a. the Purple Cobras). Derby beds are constructed from metal frames and bicycle tires. A carpeted plywood “bed” hosts one rider who is responsible to steer with a rod mechanism, while four others push. Playing cards are picked up at the start of the race, along the route and at the end of the heat. “I just wanted to do it. Get together as women in the community who are fit,” Trudy Sigfusson of the Fidelity Fitness team said of signing up for the derby, “I’m pretty giddy about it, not going to lie.”
Scavenger hunt
For the family scavenger hunt, 43 entered and were sent around town to look for street names, signs and garage door numbers among other little adventures. Winners were: 1. Taylor Kiel and Alexis Pedford 2. Serena Mclennan, Luke Lechner, Liam Lechner, Mikela Lechner 3. Jeff Bashnick 4. Susan Clow 5. Cyrus, Kristi, Conner and Kayla Crook Winners won $20 gift certificates from Licksapolooza.
Evening ends on a bang
Balgonie Fire Chief Dave Campbell said the fireworks show went well. A guestimate on crowd size (as sky watchers were spread out around town, over fields and the sports grounds) was set at about 2,000. The Town pays for the fireworks, and firefighters along with Campbell (an accredited fireworks supervisor) take care of the show and fuse work. “Our kids are coming home for the day,” Wayne Kiel of the Elks said of what he’d heard from Balgonie residents of the deeper draw of the Canada Day celebration. Kiel talked of families having supper together and then coming out for the fireworks. “Families having fun. Families staying strong together,” he said.

espite a painstaking 42-40 loss, there were many positives shown by the home squad. Starting quarterback Kevin Glenn had a tremendous game completing 33 of 40 passes for 477 yards. Second year man Ryan Smith emerged as a dynamic and exciting receiver. Canadian tailback Jerome Messam combined rushing and six receptions for 156 total yards. Newly acquired place kicker Paul McCallum was four for four in field goals and added a convert. Together with import punter Ray Early, he brought much needed stability to a kicking game that was highly suspect during the 2014 campaign. The return of safety Tyron Brackenridge and star receiver Weston Dressler provided a major boost. Jake Doughty had an outstanding game replacing injured Shea Emry at middle linebacker, making seven tackles and snagging a sensational interception. Alas, a critical fourth quarter interception and 100-yard return by A.J. Jefferson turned the game in Toronto’s favour midway through the fourth quarter. With Rider victory seemingly at hand, that return energized the Argonauts and changed the entire complexion of the game. This was a penalty filled contest, as both squads seemingly struggled with the 2015 rule changes. The deciding two point convert in the second overtime was determined
when the play was referred to Toronto for confirmation after being ruled dead at the one yard line by on-field officials. Looking at the final statistics for the game, the Roughriders could well have emerged victorious. Their net offense was a gaudy 577 yards, compared to 349 for the Boatmen. The Argonauts were fortunate to leave Mosaic with a record of two and zero, tied for first place in the Canadian Football League with the surprising Ottawa Redblacks. Saskatchewan is still searching for the attacking style defense promised by head man Corey Chamblin. For much of the contest, the Riders appeared to be rushing only three down linemen and dropping nine into coverage. They altered that strategy during the two overtimes, as they rushed halfbacks and their safety to pressure Toronto’s rookie pivot Trevor Harris. He met the challenge, completing four touchdown passes to secure their victory. Saskatchewan’s offense appears to be very productive under veteran Glenn, while our defense remains a work in progress. Our normally fast starting sod-busters find themselves at zero and two. On to British Columbia! Lorne Dunsmore has played, coached and keenly observed football in Saskatchewan for several decades.

Over the last couple of months we’ve talked quite a bit about communicating with God - what we in the church call “prayer.”Prayer is important to us because it’s impossible to sustain a relationship with a person you don’t communicate with. If you doubt that, try not speaking to your spouse, or kids, or co-workers for a week and see how it works out for you! If are curious about God, if you want to get to know him better, prayer is the place to start. Your prayers don’t have to contain the perfect words, follow some special formula or be filled with deep insight for God to listen. After all, he’s God - it’s not like you can tell him something he doesn’t know! God wants to hear from you today. So why not open the lines of communication right now?

P
ack a lunch and buckle up. This is going to be a long, bumpy ride. I’m not talking about this column, but rather the 2015 Saskatchewan Roughriders season. Only four games in (two preseason, two regular season), this team has yet to taste the sweet sensation of victory. The winless exhibition season doesn’t mean much but you have to wonder what’s going on in the rookies’ minds, particularly after two close home losses to open the year (30-26 to Winnipeg and Sunday’s 42-40 double overtime loss to Toronto). Some must be thinking, ‘Are we a good team or not?’ There’s plenty of reason to panic, yet it’s also far too early to do so. The Roughriders may be winless going into Week 3 but division mates Edmonton and B.C. can say the same thing while Calgary and Winnipeg are only a game ahead at 1-1. The trouble is, the Riders don’t seem to be trending upwards in one key area: defense. They gave up a whopping 470 yards to the Blue Bombers in Week 1 and may have trimmed that to 367 in Week 2, but it was disturbing that the Riders allowed Toronto quarterback Trevor Harris to mount a game-tying touchdown drive – starting from their own 25-yard line – with only 1:08 to go on Sunday afternoon. A more aggressive defense was promised when long-time coordinator Richie Hall was shown the

door last December. And yet this bunch has been anything but so far this summer. However if you listen to the quotes coming out of the Roughrider locker room late Sunday afternoon, you’d swear the Riders had won the game. “A lotta good signs in all three phases,” Riders head coach Corey Chamblin told our CKRM postgame show. “We gotta get points. We have to have points if we have 500 yards.” And with that, the finger was momentarily pointed at the offense. However the only really glaring thing quarterback Kevin Glenn can be accused of is the 100-yard pick six he threw to Toronto’s A.J. Jefferson at the 5:34 mark of the fourth quarter which brought the score to 21-18 Saskatchewan. “Kevin wishes he had that ball back,” Chamblin revealed after the game. “The team tried to fight back but the mindset was different after that. Defensive points against are tough to get over.” It’s equally tough for the offense to watch from the sidelines as the other team marches the ball all the way down the field to tie the score with the game on the line. We’ve seen this Roughriders team play in unison like a finely-tuned orchestra at times during the golden era of 2007-2013. We’ve also seen them scrap and fight like bar-room brawlers at times too. One phase of the team covering for another on any given day to help secure the win. Right now they’re not close to doing any of that, but it’s still extremely early and it’s clear Chamblin is doing his best to keep his troops upbeat. Now in his fourth season, his methods are very clear.

PUBLIC NOTICE
Notice of Intent to Amend the Zoning Bylaw
If this team was 2-0 at this time, he’d be “ripping them a new one” in order to keep them humble. “(Chamblin) just said he liked our intensity, he loved our effort and we’re that close,” rookie linebacker Jake Doughty said of his coach’s postgame locker room speech. “We’re a couple inches away and we’ll be a good football team.” Sophomore returner/receiver Ryan Smith was singing from the same hymn book, stressing the positives. With 174 yards on eight catches and his second touchdown score of the season, he had reason to. “Our heads are held high,” Smith said. “We came out there fighting and that’s all we can ask for. We came up a little short today but next week we’ll be ready to go.” That next week showdown is this Friday night against the 0-1 B.C. Lions in Vancouver in a game I’m dubbing the Bad Blood Bowl. Lions offensive coordinator George Cortez was fired by the Riders following the 2014 season and has had little to say about it since. Meanwhile the Riders’ 45-year old kicker Paul McCallum was turfed by B.C. coming out of training camp three weeks ago and he’ll be making his first return to B.C. Place. Oh – I forgot to mention the Riders signed McCallum last Wednesday? At least the 23-year veteran was 4 for 4 against the Argos, allowing for some relief in the special teams area which ailed in Week 1. So now in mid-July, we’re still trying to sort out what the 2015 Saskatchewan Roughriders are. Rod Pedersen is the Voice of the Roughriders on the CKRM Rider Radio Network.
