Daemen College Physical Therapy Students Reach Out A Hand to Help With Hurricane Relief Efforts August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina blasted the Gulf Coast with record setting hurricane winds and caused an unprecedented amount of devastation. Americans immediately opened up their hearts, giving their time, resources, and money, enabling recovery efforts to start immediately. These recovery efforts continue as progress is made daily throughout the Gulf Coast. Recently, eight members of the Daemen College community spent their spring break in Pass Christian, Mississippi, performing relief work. Three of these eight individuals, Vince DiGiovanna, Amy Phillips, and Julie Schnepp, are currently in the professional phase of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Daemen. The group traveled to and from Mississippi in one of Daemen College’s 12 passenger vans. After spending 24 hours in the van, and changing a flat tire, the group arrived in Pass Christian, and were shown to their living quarters for the week. The group spent the week sleeping on cots in large circus tents, and eating in a military style mess hall. Before settling in, they helped raise a large tent for fellow volunteers to sleep in that night. The group spent the first three days working in a local church, helping with a variety of tasks including hanging drywall and spackling, priming, and painting the newly hung drywall. Working at the church allowed the members of the Daemen Community to meet and interact with some of the local residents within Pass

Christian. Following their work at the church, the group spent their last two days on the roof of a retired firefighter who lives in Gulfport, one town over from Pass Christian. This roof was in desperate need of being stripped. After stripping the roof, new felt and shingles were laid. After spending five days working from breakfast through dinner, the group loaded up the van, and returned to Buffalo as changed individuals. From the first moments that the group entered the affected area, indescribable destruction existed everywhere. While completing a week of relief work allowed the group to make a measurable difference in the lives of some residents of Pass Christian, a profound impact was made on the lives of those people from Daemen who contributed to the effort.

Student PTs in Africa This past Winter break, three Daemen College PT students (Tim Pembroke, Melanie Kraft, and Ali Ladak) traveled to Tanzania, East Africa with Justine Tutuska and students from the Health Care Studies program. These students followed the work initiated by a group of PT students the previous year who went to Africa to educate other health professionals and teamed with an NGO called Aiding Youth for Life (www.AYL.ca) to advocate preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS among sub-Saharan African secondary school students. Both student groups shared educational tools and methods developed at Daemen with Tanzanian orthopedic healthcare professionals. This years’ volunteers held a workshop at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This workshop, delivered to residents, physicians and practicing physical therapists at the hospital, included a fully annotated PowerPoint presentation covering the current anatomy, differential diagnosis, treatment and follow up of a specific joint. The focus of the presentation was shoulder kinesiology and biomechanics and joint mobilization. This year’s group of students also visited an orphanage and brought them supplies and engaged in activities such as coloring-in AIDS ribbons to create awareness and as an art project. Some members of this group also met with other local NGO’s to find out what we could do to help spread AIDS awareness. The whole group attempted to climb mount Kilimanjaro (largest mountain in Africa) where four members of our Daemen group reached the top.
