be very little difference in value between some of the fabrics, as indicated in the fabric descriptions. Tip: You can also use scraps, as long as all fabrics in each of the 21 groups have the same color and value. As you cut the fabrics, use a box lid or tray to organize cut shapes. Write each fabric number on a small piece of paper. Place the cut shapes on the tray with the fabric number. To make the E and F templates, carefully trace the patterns onto template plastic. Include straightof-grain markings. Cut out on the drawn line. To cut patches, place the template right-side down on the wrong side of the fabric. Trace around with a sharp pencil. Cut just inside the drawn line. A small letter r indicates a reverse patch, which should be traced right-side up on the wrong side of the fabric. For more information on templates, see “Timeless Templates” by Gail Valentine in the March 2011 issue of American

Piecing a block Detailed instructions are given for making one T block. Then refer to the Block T through Z diagrams for block counts and color placement. To make construction easier, lay out all pieces for a block before starting to sew. Pay close attention to fabric color placement as you sew the units. Referring to the figures for fabric selection (numbers in parentheses), sew B triangles to each side of A. Press all seam allowances in the direction of the arrows. Add C triangles. Following figure 3, join D triangles to make halfsquare triangle units. Sew 4 units together for each corner unit.

Adding the borders Join a fabric #2 border #1 strip (4½") and a fabric #1 border #2 strip (1¾"). Press seam allowances toward the narrower strip. Make 2. Repeat with a fabric #21 border #1 strip and a fabric #20 border #2 strip. Make 2. Referring to the quilt assembly diagram, center a combined border strip on the quilt. Sew it to the quilt center, starting and stopping ¼" from each corner. Miter the corners, trim the seam allowances to ¼", and press them open. Repeat for all sides.
