Light We see a light. The light is not bright enough at night. It is not sturdy. When it’s dark and you can’t see, you don’t feel safe. We need more lights on the sidewalks and field so we can see when playing soccer and won’t get hurt. We play soccer every evening in the park. People didn’t care but when we got interested and wanted to help, people started to respond to it. We can ask the City of Bakersfield to put in more lights. We can ask permission to put in brighter light bulbs and change the lamps and we can paint them a brighter color.

Pavilion

Pavilion

This building is used for storage. There are no restrooms in the park. You have to walk all the way home to use the restroom. They need to use this building for something good for the park like a restroom. We can make something out of it; put restrooms there to make it useful, not just storage. We need a colorful building that blends with the park with doors to the bathroom stalls for privacy. We need bathrooms with soap and separate bathrooms for boys and girls with several stalls in each one.

Water Fountain

Fuente Del Agua

We see a water fountain with graffiti. The water does not come out very high, it is not cold and sometimes the water that comes out is not clear and the fountain is dirty. Little kids can’t reach it because it is too high. We could get sick by drinking that water if it is dirty. It affects people who visit the park. They will think people don’t care about their community. This problem exists because people graffiti and don’t take care of their environment. There are no policemen to secure the area from tagging. We can help make a smaller water fountain for the little kids. We can tell people not to graffiti. We can call the graffiti hotline. We can put up signs that say Neighborhood Watch or we can put cameras in the park. Neighbors, the people who live here, are the best people to look over the park.

Fire Truck

Coche de bomberos

This rusty fire truck is part of the playground equipment. It’s rusty, unsafe and needs a paint job. There are parts that are broken off it. We know kids who have gotten hurt on it. We need more sand, woodchips or rubber underneath. Right now the sand is dirty and we have found broken beer bottles and trash in it. Some people are destroying the park and are not throwing away their trash. We could fix the equipment or work to bring in new equipment. It would be great to have something with water, especially in the summer because some people don’t have a pool.

Bridge

Puente

This is a bridge from the jungle gym. It is unsafe, there is a hole it in where people can fall and break their head. It looks ugly and needs to be fixed. Some irresponsible people vandalized the equipment. We can ask the City of Bakersfield to help us get new equipment like more swings.

Basketball & Fence

El baloncesto & Cerca

This is a fence and a basketball court. We need more basketball courts and full courts, not just halves. We need lines painted on the court and a new basket on the rim. The fence has holes in it, it is bent, it is missing slats, and it’s not painted and has graffiti on it. Stray dogs come through the holes in the fence and kids ditch school and come through the holes to get to the park. There is a sump on the other side of the fence. A kid already died playing in another sump near here and that could happen to another kid. People don’t treat it like they’re supposed to. We could fix the fence so no one else could drown in the sand and that’ll save more lives.

Swings

Columpio

This swing has rusty rails and eventually it will get so rusty that the swing will break and someone could get hurt or knocked out. It is not painted and it is an ugly color. These problems can happen when no one cares about the park and they do not keep it nice like they are supposed to. Sometimes drunk people come to the park that we don’t know and harass us. We need security cameras so no one gets kidnapped.
