Phone: 03) 547-7399 Fax: 03) 547-7537 [email protected] Newsletter No 16 5 June 2014 Kia Ora Families and Whanau What a great time we had last Friday when we joined in with the nationwide event Hook, Line and Singalong. Individual classes, the Kapa Haka Group, choir and whole school singing were superb! We had teachers and principals from the Pelorous Cluster visiting and they also thoroughly enjoyed this event. Today the MATHS CHALLENGE begins. Students have been given Maths Challenge sheets and on the back of these are their sponsorship forms. Children are encouraged to seek sponsorship for learning their maths facts and after testing on June 26th they will gather up their sponsorship money and return it to school. Please encourage your children in gaining sponsors and remember that we do not support their going door to door unaccompanied by an adult. What a clear sunny morning we had for our school Cross Country yesterday. Congratulations to all runners for completing the course, often with a huge smile! It was great to have lots of family and friends supporting the event! Thanks to Jane and her team for organising this for us.

On Tuesday staff attended a Teacher Only Day with teachers from the six schools in our Stoke Cluster. We listened to a variety of speakers on Writing, Maths, Blogging, Bring Your Own Devices for Digital Learning, Raising Achievement, Stories Tai Tau Ihu and Looking at the World Through Another Lens. These workshops were thought provoking, inspiring and affirming. Another Cluster Teacher Only Day is to be held on Tuesday 28th October, the day after Labour Weekend. As we have had these two Teacher Only Days our finishing date at the end of the year will be Friday, 19th December. I have received many very positive comments about the performance of our choir at the Richmond Mall last Thursday night. Well done everyone, you were fantastic ambassadors for our school. The Multi Purpose Learning Centre is nearing completion and will be handed over to the school within the next two weeks – very exciting. We are so looking forward to being able to use this space! The classrooms will be finished soon after and the official opening for the whole building project is planned for Thursday July 3rd at 2pm. More details closer to the time but do keep the afternoon free and join us for this special event!

THANK YOU to everyone who has been involved in bagging and delivering the telephone directories. Our Fundraising Team are thrilled with your support. Naku noa On behalf of the staff and students, Janice Gulbransen PRINCIPAL

TUESDAY, 1ST JULY 2014 $4 per student, (give money to class teachers). In the last week of Term 2, NZ Playhouse is visiting us to perform RAPunzel. Rapunzel is the hot favourite to win ‘A Land Far Far Away’s Got Talent With X Factor Idol’. She’s a teenage triple threat, with the voice of Lady Gaga, the dance moves of Beyonce, and the hair of… Rapunzel! But when she refuses to sign a contract with the udderly ruthless moosic producer Simon Cow, he locks her in a recording tower high above the enchanted forest to steal her singing voice with a magic tape machine. What can Rapunzel do now she can’t sing? Rap! With the help of a very handsome Fresh Prince, some very long hair, and a smattering of all your favourite fairytale characters, it’s time to flip this fairytale upside down, wave your hair in the air like you just don’t care, and put the RAP back into RAPunzel. Suitable for ages 5 to 13, this brand new play by writer Greg Cooper is performed by NZ Playhouse : www.newzealandplayhouse.co.nz.

Missing iPad One of our school mini iPads went missing in the last week of Term 1, possibly during the Open Evening. If anyone has information that will lead us to the recovery of this iPad please leave the information or your name and number at the school office and we will contact you.

TERM TWO CONFERENCES Wednesday, 2nd July from 3.15pm - Taking an active interest in your children’s learning is one of the best ways you can help them do better in school and in life. To this end we encourage ALL parents/caregivers to make a time to come along to school and participate in student led conferences. In these conferences students take responsibility for sharing their learning. - Five conferences lasting up to 45 minutes will run at the same time in each classroom. The teacher will be present to support if necessary, however they will not formally participate in individual conferences. If you have matters you would like to discuss directly with the teacher, a time outside of the conference can be arranged. - Conferences will include sharing of personal folders and be held on 2nd July except for Term 2 New Entrants in Rm 12 whose parents will meet with teachers following their New Entrant report after approx. six weeks at school. - Personal folders containing samples of work will be sent home on 30th June. We ask that you take time to share the samples and comments with your children and return folders to school at conferences or by the end of Week 1 in Term 3. - Conference bookings will be made by parents online over a two week period from 18th June. There will be one conference per student.
