FROM FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

Little Men PG 1hr 25. Greece 2016. Directed by Ira Sachs. With Jennifer Ehle, Alfred Molina, Greg Kinnear. A remarkably naturalistic and deeply moving tale of two boys at odds with their warring families from Ira Sachs (Love Is Strange). When 13-year-old Jake’s grandfather dies, his family moves from Manhattan back into his father’s old Brooklyn home. There, Jake befriends the charismatic Tony, whose single mother Leonor runs the shop downstairs. After Jake’s parents ask Leonor to sign a new, steeper lease on her store, a feud ignites between the adults and soon enough the conflict intrudes upon the borders of the boy’s friendship. Not only a joyous cinematic experience but a profound and moving one too. 3

Yet on one particular occasion she bears witness to a shocking incident, becoming entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life. Blunt (Sicario, The Young Victoria) brilliantly brings to life the complex character who captured the imagination of millions of readers. PREVIEW SCREENINGS WEDNESDAY 5 & THURSDAY 6 OCTOBER

American Honey 15 2hr 43. UK/USA 2016. Directed by Andrea Arnold. With Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf, Riley Keough. The latest from British filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Red Road, Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights). Fresh from Cannes and tipped for many awards, American Honey tells of Star, an adolescent girl from a troubled home. After she runs away with a traveling sales crew, they drive across the American Midwest selling subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, she soon gets into the group’s lifestyle of hard-partying nights, law-bending days, and young love. “A bold film, full of energy...” - David Calhoun, Time Out 5

I, Daniel Blake 15 1hr 40. UK/France/Belgium 2016. Directed by Ken Loach. With Natalie Ann Jamieson, Mark Burns, Colin Coombs. Patron of the Phoenix Cinema, Ken Loach, returns with his Palme d’or winning film, I, Daniel Blake. A 59 year old carpenter recovering from a heart attack befriends a single mum and her two kids as they navigate their way through the kafkaesque impersonal benefits system. With equal amounts of humour, warmth and despair, I, Daniel Blake is an important critique of the British social system. “One of Loach’s finest films, a drama of tender devastation.” - Owen Gleiberman. Variety 6

Director Joachim Lafosse captures the toxic hostility of ex-lovers forced to live together long after both parties have decided to separate.

Ethel & Ernest TBC 1hr 34. UK 2016. Directed by Roger Mainwood. With Jim Broadbent, Pam Ferris, Brenda Blethyn. This hand drawn animated film, based on the award winning graphic novel by Raymond Briggs, is an intimate and affectionate depiction of the life and times of his parents, two ordinary Londoners living through extraordinary events. 7

Mathilde Beaulieu is a young intern working with a branch of the French Red Cross. When a Polish nun arrives in the hospital and begs Mathilde to come to her convent, she discovers the advanced state of pregnancy that affects several of the Sisters of the convent. The Innocents is a powerful and brave film, beautifully performed by its female centric cast. “Cumulatively powerful...notable for its tact, intelligence and fine-grained character detail.” - Justin Chang, Variety 8

Nocturnal Animals TBC

1hr 55. USA 2016. Directed by Tom Ford. With Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon. A movie with a double-stranded narrative, the second element follows the actual novel, which revolves around a man whose family vacation turns violent and deadly. Fresh from winning the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, this is a terrifically absorbing thriller from the director of A Single Man. “A pitch-black thriller to make you queasy with tension and regret” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian 9

FROM FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER

Indignation TBC 1hr 50. USA 2016. Directed by James Schamus. With Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, Melanie Blake Roth. Based on Philip Roth’s novel, Indignation takes place in 1951, as Marcus Messner, a brilliant working class Jewish boy from Newark, New Jersey, travels on scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus’s growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia Hutton, and his clashes with the college’s imposing Dean, Hawes Caudwell, put his and his family’s best laid plans to the ultimate test. “Undoubtedly accomplished, with handsome production values and stellar performances.” - Nigel M Smith, The Guardian 10
