PHOENIX CINEMA F E B R U A RY & M A RC H

WELCOME It’s awards season and we are ready for the red carpet! Dressed in vintage red and gold, the Phoenix is the perfect place to catch some of the best films of the year. As a single-screen cinema, there are always a few great movies we can’t show on release, so we’ve collected some of “the ones that got away” and we’ll be screening them during the week of the Oscars®, along with some returning favourites which have also picked up nominations. We’ll also be showing some European releases, supporting smaller-scale film production and offering our audience a truly diverse programme. We’re excited about: • Waving our handkerchiefs on Easter Monday (p.13) • Hearing a musical quartet breathe new life into a silent classic (p.22) • Celebrating women who made a difference (p.24) Every ticket, membership, coffee or ice cream you buy goes towards the work of the Phoenix. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

FROM FRIDAY 5 FEBRUARY

Trumbo 15 2hrs 4. USA 2015. Directed by Jay Roach. With Bryan Cranston, Elle Fanning, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren. When Dalton Trumbo, a well-considered screenwriter in Hollywood in the 1940s as well as a member of the Communist party, refused to testify in front of the notorious House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947, his refusal led to his imprisonment as well as a period of blacklisting that lasted over a decade. During that time he continued to work clandestinely, and saw Academy Awards® for films he had written – such as Roman Holiday – go to other people who had been credited for his scripts. With an Oscar®-nominated performance from Bryan Cranston (Drive, Breaking Bad), the cast includes Helen Mirren(The Queen, Calendar Girls), Diane Lane (The Perfect Storm) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man). 3

FROM FRIDAY 5 FEBRUARY

Spotlight 15 2hrs 9. USA 2015. Directed by Thomas McCarthy. With Rachael McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, John Slattery. A tense, investigative thriller following the “Spotlight” team of newspaper reporters at the Boston Globe, who delve into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church. Their investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. With Academy Award® nominations for Best Picture and Director, Spotlight tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. “Skin-prickling” - Robbie Collin, The Telegraph 4

FROM FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY

A Bigger Splash 15 2hrs 4. Italy/France 2015. Directed by Luca Guadagnino. With Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes,Dakota Johnson. Bowie-esque rock legend Marianne (Tilda Swinton) is recuperating in near-silence on the volcanic island of Pantelleria with her partner Paul when iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry (Fiennes) unexpectedly arrives with his newly-discovered daughter Penelope and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an blast of nostalgia, noise and heat. A Bigger Splash is a sensuous portrait of desire, jealousy and rock and roll, under the Mediterranean sun. “A real pleasure” - Andrew Pulver, The Guardian 5

FROM FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY

Rams (Hrútar) 15 1hr 33. Iceland 2015. Directed by Grímur Hákonarson. With Sigurður Sigurjónsson, Theodór Júlíusson, Charlotte Bøving. In a secluded valley in Iceland, Gummi and Kiddi live side by side, tending to their sheep. Their ancestral sheep-stock is considered one of the country’s best, and the two brothers are repeatedly awarded for their prized rams who carry an ancient lineage. Although they share the land and a way of life, Gummi and Kiddi have not spoken to each other in four decades. When disaster strikes, each brother tries to stave off ruin in his own fashion but will they have to work together if they are to defeat the authorities? Winner of Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

FROM FRIDAY 4 MARCH

Hail, Caesar! tbc TBC. USA 2016. Directed by Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. With Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, George Clooney. Firm Phoenix favourites the Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis) return to the Golden Age Hollywood setting of their Palme d’Orwinning Barton Fink with a frenetic, hilarious farce surrounding a day in the life of a fixer for a major studio. Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) has a day that goes from bad to worse as he tries to find out what has happened to a star who has disappeared mid-production, eventually uncovering an elaborate kidnapping plot. Returning Coen regulars Brolin (No Country For Old Men), George Clooney (O, Brother, Where Art Thou?) and Frances McDormand (Raising Arizona) and a gloriously funny script make this one of the real treats of 2016. 8

FROM FRIDAY 18 MARCH

High-Rise tbc 1hr 52. UK 2015. Directed by Ben Wheatley. With Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Reece Shearsmith. In a London tower block on the eve of Margaret Thatcher’s first general election victory, the affluent residents of the luxury upper floors are sinking into immorality and decadence, and those trapped lower down are beginning to resent their unequal treatment – civilisation is breaking down, and Dr Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston, Crimson Peak, Thor), newly moved in to the 25th floor, has a perfect view. With a script by his long-term collaborator and partner Amy Jump, cult director Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers) brings J G Ballard’s dystopian satire to the screen “with a flourish” (Tim Robey, The Telegraph). 9

FROM FRIDAY 25 MARCH

Marguerite 15 2hrs 9. France/Czech Republic/Belgium 2015. Directed by Xavier Giannoli. With Catherine Frot, André Marcon. Loosely based on the true story of American socialite and amateur singer Florence Foster Jenkins, Xavier Giannoli’s film is set in 1920s Paris and stars Catherine Frot (The Page Turner), who gives a heartfelt performance as the passionate, always-hopeful title character. Surrounded by people who refuse to tell her the truth about her voice for various reasons kindness, venality, a peaceful (but never quiet) life - Marguerite has a vulnerability which invites the audience to think more deeply about her character and motivations.
