1. Content Manager

Welcome and thank you for using version 2.5.x of the Content Manager software. 1.1.

Platforms

Content Manager is designed to run on a Microsoft Windows 8, Windows 7,Vista or XP (SP2+) personal computer.  Use of a high-performance graphics card is recommended, because the software utilises the DirectX library.  Ethernet support is required to connect to the luminous textile panels. 1.2.

System overview

A luminous textile panel (LTP) installation is an Ethernet-based LED lighting installation.  It is an integrated hardware and software solution designed for to bring ambient lighting effects to spaces. The Content Manager software is an application that allows you to set up a luminous textile panel configuration and create, edit and upload content to the LTPs.  It contains five main functionalities: 1. Configuring the panels and network via Surface Configurator 2. Creating content playlists via Playlist Editor 3. Converting playlists to panel content via Content Converter 4. Creating a playback schedule for playlists via Scheduler 5. Uploading all the files created above via Uploader 1.3.

Terminology

The following list explains the terminology used when discussing the Content Manager software: • Content: Video files or animations that you can import in the Content Manager. The Content Manager only accepts Windows Media Video files (WMV v9 VC-1 codec). When media with audio information is imported into the Content Manager, the audio data will be ignored. • Panel:

A luminous textile surface.

• Player:

The driverbox of a panel.  Each LTP contains at least a player.

• Timeline: A timeline is a time sequence ruler on which the user can place animation files. It depicts the time characteristics of animations. • Playlists:

Multiple content files on a timeline that are played in a continuous loop, with fade in/out transitions. A playlist has a fixed length and can contain periods of time in which no content is displayed.

• Album:

An album is a collection of playlists generated in Content Manager. The album name can be entered in the Content Converter window. The album can be changed on the control page.

• Fade:

A video fade is when a shot gradually fades to (or from) a single colour, usually black or white.

• Crossfade: A gradual fade from one shot to the next is known as a crossfade, mix or dissolve. • LSC file:

The surface configuration file.

• LCP file: “LCP” is the extension for a luminous textile panel content project.  An LCP project contains the content, the timelines for various playlists, and the panel and wall configuration. When the Scheduler is programmed, the project file will also contain the scheduling of the playlists. • LCF file:

The converted content files that can be played by a panel.

• Schedule: The playback schedule for the playlists contained in an LCP file. 1.4.

Recommendation for video files

The software only supports the Windows Media Video (WMV) format. During the encoding procedure, the following settings are recommended for optimal playback: • Format: WMV (Windows Media Video v9) • Codec: VC-1 • Bit rate:  average 1 Mbps (for standard quality) • Keyframe interval:  1s

2. Getting started

2.1.

Installation

Before you start installing the Content Manager, please make sure the minimum system requirements are met: • Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack (SP2), Windows 7 or Windows 8 • Microsoft .NET 4.0 or later • 2.0 Gigabytes (GB) RAM recommended • 850 MB of available hard disk space You need to install the Content Manager on your computer’s hard disk. The processor speed and the available RAM impact the graphical performance in the preview mode and may limit the preview’s speed. You need to have several GB of available hard disk space for storing your video clips and generated content files for the luminous textile panel installation. To install Content Manager: 1. Go to our website (www.largeluminoussurfaces.com/software) and register with your email address to download the latest version of Content Manger software. 2. Save the “Philips.ContentManager.Setup.zip” file on your hard drive. 3. Extract “Philips.ContentManager.Setup.zip” to the desired directory. 4. Double click “Philips.ContentManager.setup.exe” to start the installation. 5. Follow the instructions in the install wizard.

2.2.

Overview of menus and functions

To start the Content Manager: 1. On the desktop, click on the Content Manager icon. 2. On the taskbar, click Start > All Programs > Philips Luminous Textile > Content Manager. The Content Manager contains five sub-tools: 1. Surface Configurator 2. Playlist Editor 3. Content Converter 4. Scheduler 5. Uploader After the application has been started, you can very easily switch between tools.  In this section, an overview of the functions and menu items will be given.

Preview a library video.  It also displays the basic information of a video file:  resolution in pixels, frame rate (fps), name and duration. You can seek an individual frame as well.

Timeline You can drag & drop a video clip from the library to the timeline to create your own playlists.  A video file on the timeline can be repeated many times. 8

This icon depicts a video file. The name and duration of the video is shown on the icon.

The repeat count. This indicates how many times the video will be repeated. The total duration on the icon will be changed based on the repeat counter.

  Fade in. The maximum fade in time is 10 s.

  Delete a video from the time line. Indicates the time at the position on the timeline.   Delete a playlist. You can add a playlist by clicking it.  Drag the playlist to a new position to change the order of the playlists.

Note: • For fade in/out and crossfade: If the duration of the content is less than 10 s, the maximum fade time is the half of the imported content time.

Seek function. This only works when a playlist is in pause mode.You can seek an individual frame in a playlist. This function will work for a repeated video as well.

3. Using the Content Manager

The Content Manager enables you to create playlists for your Luminous textile panel installation. The following steps explain how to create playlists for imported video files and convert them to the format compatible with the LTPs.  Once converted, the files and settings must be uploaded to the LTP installation. The Surface Configurator allows the user to configure the luminous textile panel layout and edit the network settings. The surface (marked by a dashed line) represents the wall on which the LTPs are mounted. Make sure the dimensions of the surface and the LTPs defined in the Surface Configurator match the actual installation.  The content created in the following chapters will not display correctly if the Surface Configurator settings do not match your LTP installation. 1. The first step is to configure your surface. a. How big is your surface? b. How many panels will be installed on the surface? c. How will the panels be positioned on the surface? 2. The second step is to configure your panel network. a. Will the panels be connected to the same network? b. Which panel will be the master if they are connected to the same network, and will the LTP installation play content over different panels? c. Have you assigned a networkconfig to a panel? d. Is every panel reachable in the panel network? 3. The third step is to create your playlists. a. b. c. d.

How many playlists would you like to create? Which video files would you like to use to create your playlists? Where would you like to add fade in/out and crossfade? Preview the playlists to check whether they are OK.

4. The fourth step is to render the playlists to a file format compatible with the installation (*.lcf). 5. The fifth step is to create a playback schedule. a. When and for how long would you like a playlist to be played? 6. The sixth step is to upload all the files and settings you have created in your project. a. b. c. d.

Remark: • If the network configuration has not been finalised in the Surface Configurator, the uploading (step 6) will not work.

3.1.

Starting projects

To start a new “Content Project”: • In the Menu, select File > New project. To open an existing project stored on your computer: • In the Menu, select File > Open project. Then select and double-click the Lumalive project you would like to open. Note: • The project file contains the location of the imported video files and information on playlists.  If you have moved or deleted the imported video files, the Content Manager will not be able to locate the video file. The following icon will be shown in the library as the thumbnail for a missing video file.  Import your video files again by using menu item “Import content” or double clicking at one of the missing content icons.

3.2.

Default project

A user can save a project, which includes the lcp and lsc files as his/her default project. Therefore, the user can always reuse these files to create a new project or new playlists. • Create the default project: go to the “File” menu and select “Save Project as Default Project”. • Open the default project: go to the “File” menu and select “Open Default Project”.

3.3.

Configure a surface

When the application starts, the Surface Configurator sub-tool is selected. To open an existing surface configuration stored on your computer: • In the Menu, select Import > Surface. When the surface has already been configured but not stored on your computer, you can import the Surface configuration directly from the installation. • In the Menu, select Import > Surface from Installation.

Figure 13:  Import Surface Then select and double-click the surface configuration file (*.lsc) you would like to import. To create a new surface configuration, you have following options: • Define the surface size by modifying the “Width” and “Height” in the “Surface” info box. • Add/delete a panel by clicking the “add panel” or “delete panel” icon on the toolbar. • Multiple panel selection :  press the “Ctrl” key and use the left mouse to select multiple panels.  For the selected multiple panels, a user can: -- Change the size of all panel in the same time by editing the width or height of the panels at the “information box”. -- Align the panel in X or Y directions.  If type a value at the Y field, the selected panels will be aligned in the Y direction.  If type a value at the X field, the selected panels will be aligned in the X direction. -- Move the selected panels by using “”, “”, “”, and “” keys.

Note: • The largest LTP is 6480 mm x 1200 mm. However the maximum panel size supported by one panel player is 4320 mm x 1200 mm. This means if your panel is larger than this size, it requires two panel players to support it. Therefore, you must draw two panels that positioned exactly next to each other without any gap in between to logically depict the oversized panel. The sizes of the different panels representing a panel larger than 4320 x 1200 mm must be provided to you by the application engineer.  If the information is not available, please contact the Large Luminous Surfaces back office.

3.3.1. Configuring luminous textile panel network LTPs are connected to a Local Area Network.  If you would like to upload your playlists that you have created in the Content Manager to one of the panels, your PC must have access to the LANs to which the LTPs are connected. You must assign a network address to the panel. You use this IP address to gain access to the panel’s control page. 1. Figure 14 and Figure 15 show two different configurations in which LTPs are connected to a LAN via a separate router.  In this situation, each panel’s IP address usually starts with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. 2. In the situation shown in Figure 14 you must connect your PC within the same network as the LTP installation. Your PC will be assigned an address similar to those of the LTPs and will be able to communicate with them.

3. In the situation shown in Figure 15 the router is connected to the corporate LAN, to which your PC is also connected. You can upload the playlists via the corporate LAN. Your PC does not have to be connected directly to the private LAN router.  Please align with the local IT department to accomplish such installations.

3.3.2. Configuring all fields There are two ways to configure and assign the network configurations to a panel. 1. Auto discovery the panels 2. Manually configure the panels

3.3.2.1. Auto discover panel network at the If the PC where Content Manager is installed is connected to the same sub network of the panels, click icon “network configuration” area to discover all connected panels.  For example, the Content Manager can discover the connected panels in the situation at Figure 14 and Figure 16. Note: • If panels could be reached via a wireless network, make sure that the PC is connected to the same wireless network.

3.3.2.2. Manually configure panel network If you computer has multiple network adapters active a popup will ask you to select the network adapter. Select the correct network adapter and press 'Discover'

Figure 18:  Content Manager - Network configuration • You can enter a name for the new configuration if you want. The default name is “NetworkConfig” followed by a number. • Type the actual IP address in the address field.  If all panels are connected to a LAN behind a router, they will all have the same IP address. Then: -- Assign an unique control port number -- Assign an unique upload port number • Delete a configuration by clicking

Note: • The control port (Port 80) and upload port (Port 21) can be configured in the router. To learn more about port forwarding or router setup, consult the local IT department or contact LLS support via www.largeluminoussurfaces.com.

3.3.2.3. Set panel type If an installation contains more than one panels, you have to set a type for each panel. It is for the purpose of playing content among all panels in a synchronized way. • Select a type in the type field. You can choose Master, Slave or Standalone. -- Master:  the panel with this network configuration will be the master panel, which will initiate the synchronisation signal, command, etc. The icon

depicts the master panel.

-- Slave:  the panels with this network configuration will be the slave panels, which will receive the synchronisation signal, commands, etc., from the master and execute them. The icon -- Standalone:  these panels will operate independently. The icon

depicts a slave panel.

-- Remote Control:  indicates that a remote control is connected to this panel.  In general, the remote control will be connected to the “Master” panel.

Figure 19:  Content Manager - Set panel type • For an “oversized” panel, if the panel is set as “Standalone”, you have set one of the “sub-panels” as the Master and another one as Slave to have them play the content as one panel. Note: • Beware, you do need clicking the “Set type” icon to execute the “set action” for each panel after you have set the type of a panel. • For more information about the “Master/Slave” configuration, please consult the Installation and cleaning guide and refer to “Master and Slave or Standalone configuration” in Chapter 3.  Ensure there is only 1 master panel in your network. Having multiple master in a network will lead to undesired behavior to slave panels.

3.3.2.4. Assign a network configuration to a panel • Assign a configuration to a panel by clicking configurations from the list. The icon

Note: • If only one panel is discovered, and there is only one panel in de surface, the panel will automatically be assigned.

Figure 20:  Surface Configuration Assign After you have auto discovered or manually configured the panel network, you have to assign each panel to one of these network configuration. • Beware it is not possible to assign a network configuration to two panels.  It has been excluded by the Content Manager.

3.3.2.5. Panel status • After finishing the assignment, you can view the connection status of a panel.  4 status are defined: 1. Please contact LLS service" when hoovering above it) There is not need to contact LLS service, however when missing this feature is causing you issues, feel free to contact LLS service.

3.3.2.6. Identify a panel In the installation place, after assigning each panel to a network configuration, you have to check if each panel is assigned with a correct network configuration such that the panels are viewed in the correct sequence both in the Content manager and on the installed wall. Please click “Identify” to identify: • Select a type for the configured panel (i.e. the configuration that has been assigned) by clicking • Select a panel from which you want visual feedback during an installation by clicking the (See Figure 22).

• Beware, you have to click the “identify” icon again to go back to the panel normal playing status. Otherwise the panel will stay to the “Identify” status forever. • Since there are two panels are drawn for representing the “oversized” panel, please use “Identify” function to make sure that the correct network configurations are assigned to these two panels.

3.3.2.7. Panel update Update the player firmware.  If “Update required” text appears to this field, it means a new version of player firmware is available and an update is required for this player. • Beware, an update action will take approximately 3~4 minutes.  Please do not unplug a panel from the mains. Very rarely this can lead to an fatal failure.  If so please contact the Large Luminous Surfaces back office.

3.3.2.8. Features nice to know This section lists some features nice to know. • The playback orientation can be rotated. This can be set in the administrator section of the control page.  Additional details are provided in section 4.1.  After a rotation of the panel please re-discover your network and press the to update the new settings • You can access a panel’s control page by clicking the page in your default browser.

• Beware, a network configuration will be saved in the project file only if the configuration is being assigned to a panel. • View a panel’s info:  select a panel and hover the mouse over the panel; an info box will appear, the “output1” indicates the output directory, where the converted content (*.lcf) will be saved for this panel. Note: • Control port:  for http connection. The default is 80. • Upload Port:  for ftp connection. The default is 21. • For multiple panels: -- It is NOT allowed to assign multiple panels to the same configuration. -- The combination of IP address and control port or IP address and upload port must be unique. -- These configuration rules are checked by the software. • There is only ONE Master per network. The Content Manager does not check this.  If there are multiple masters in a panel sub-network.  An user has to make sure that only one master is in the panel sub-network.

3.4.

Creating playlists

To start creating playlists for luminous textile panels, you have to create or import your area/surface configuration file that you have created in Surface Configuration.  By selecting Import - Surface in the Menu area to open the “Importing a surface configuration” window, you can import the configuration file (you must select a file with the “lsc” extension). 3.4.1. Importing video files To import video files to the Content Manager library: • In the Menu, select Import > Import Content. Select one or multiple video files, then click the “Open” button.

3.4.2. Creating/editing a Playlist • Drag & drop video files to the timeline one by one. You also have the following options: -- Reposition a video:  select a video, drag it to the new position and then drop it. -- Repeat multiple times for a video file. -- Copy & paste a video to another place on the timeline. • Change the name of a playlist:  double-click the name of a playlist you would like to change, type the new name then press the “Return” key. • Add/delete a playlist. • Add a fade in option:  only possible at the beginning of a video. • Add a fade out option:  only possible at the end of a video. • Add a crossfade option between two videos.  After you set the crossfade option for one of the two videos you cannot set crossfade for another video anymore. • Map your video to the panels. You can change the virtual frame size or move it around to decide which frame part will be mapped to a panel. To align with your panels, double-click the virtual video frame. The tool will auto align the frame with the panels.

Viewing/previewing a playlist After finishing your creation, you will want to review your playlists and see how they look on the panels. The following options will help you view, preview, or zoom in/out on a playlist. • Zoom in/out, view the playlist • 1:1 set the view to 1:1 • Fill:  fill the view area • Preview:  you can switch to the preview mode by clicking the icon on the toolbar.  Please be aware that this is only a simulation.  It will look different on a panel, with its surrounding lights. • Seek a frame.  Once you have paused a playlist that was playing, you can use the slider bar to seek a particular frame. The seek bar is located above the timeline.

3.4.4. Converting the content To render the playlists to a format compatible with the LTP, go to the Content Converter Tool and press “Start” to convert the content and playlists you created in the Playlist editor tool. You can rename your playlists. The default name is “content”.

3.5.

Creating a playback scheduler

Switch to the Scheduler tool to create a playback schedule for your playlists.  Double-click in the schedule area (day, week, month) to activate the schedule popup window.

Uploading files to luminous textile panel installation

Once you have created surface configuration, content and playback schedule files you have to upload them to the panels. You can choose which file you would like to be uploaded to the panels.  Before clicking the “upload” button, make sure: • Your PC is correctly connected to the network of the LTP installation. • The status of panels is green in the Surface Configurator. • The correct user name and password are correctly entered.

Pack & Go

To share or send your project to other users, go to “File” menu and select “Pack & go” option or use “Ctrl +G”. The Content Manager will compress all used content files, lcp, lsc, and lcf files to a file so that it can be sent/shared with another user.  In the pop up window, you can set the options to not include all “UNUSED” inventory items into your “pack & go” files.

Time Zone:  Sets the correct time zone for the luminous textile panels.

5. FAQ

1. Does the tool support other video file formats? Answer: The officially supported video file format is WMV, encoded with the WVC1 codec. If a different codec is installed on your computer, the tool may support your video format. 2. Why does it takes so long to convert playlists to panel content file? Answer: The time to convert the playlists to the content that will be played on a panel depend on:   •  how many different video files are being used in the playlists.   •  how long a video is. It may require a long precessing time to convert the playlists. 3. Why is it not possible to have a “slave” panel automatically go into play mode after I click its “identify” button in the Surface Configurator? Answer: This is an intended behaviour.  Suppose three panels (one Master, two Slaves) are installed and a user has clicked the identify button for every panel, i.e. all panels are in identify mode. The system is designed so that when the user sets the Master panel to play mode the Slave panels will not automatically go into play mode, i.e they will not automatically switch from identify mode to play mode. 4. Why my content is being played out of synchronization? Answer: Please check if the panels are connected to a same sub-network.  For example, you can check if all panels are being plugged to the correct sockets in the router.

General. This Agreement contains the entire agreement between you and Philips and supersedes any prior representation, undertaking or other communication or advertising with respect to the Software and user documentation.  If any part of this Agreement is held invalid, the remainder of this Agreement will continue in full force and effect. This Agreement shall not prejudice the statutory rights of any party dealing as a consumer.
