pH The pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a sample. A pH of 7 means that the sample is neutral and reacts neither like an acid nor like a base. Fresh tap water, for example, is approximately neutral. Samples with a pH of less then 7 are acidic, e.g. lemonade, lemon juice or hydrochloric acid. In practice pH values down to below -1 are known. An alkaline sample has a pH of more than 7, e.g. stale tap water, water containing detergents or soda lye. The pH scale reaches values of more than 15.

The more the pH differs from 7, the more aggressive the sample. For each pH unit the acidic or basic effects increase by a factor of 10. pH can be measured by electrochemical pH measuring systems, indicator strips, indicators or colorimeters. Of these only electrochemical measurements provide accurate results. Measurements are made with an electrode. The electrode is an electrochemical sensor which consists of a measuring electrode and a reference electrode. The voltage at a membrane alters according to the pH of the sample solution. The electrodes normally used today are constructed so that the voltage at the membrane is 0 mV when the pH is 7. The more the pH differs from 7, the larger the voltage signal produced. The pH meter uses this signal to calculate the pH.

pH ®

SenTix The clever idea for filling SenTix® electrodes Anyone who has to frequently work with pH electrodes knows about the awkward properties of KCl solution: • it climbs up beaker walls, • it penetrates even the finest pores and cracks and • it crystallizes out leaving an unpleasantlooking residue.

Topping up the electrolyte solution of combination electrodes and reference electrodes seldom happens without some drops escaping and forming harmless but nasty-looking crystalline stains in a very short time. This is why this should always be carried out on a working surface. This can even happen with the new range of SenTix® electrodes, but far less often when it is carried out correctly. But how?

Take the enclosed plastic dropping bottle and: • remove the red cap • cut off tip – if still sealed – as near the end as possible so that the tip can be inserted in the refilling hole of the SenTix® electrode to seal it off • in order to prevent overpressure in the electrode squeeze the dropping bottle gently and then insert the tip into the refilling hole so that the dropped bottle is seated firmly in the refilling hole. • by releasing and squeezing the bottle several times in succession (pumping) the topping-up process can be carried out perfectly without any mess

®

SenTix electrodes

SenTix® – the new electrode system from WTW offers more comfort, quality and precision ● The low-impedance membrane glass ensures that stable measurements are rapidly achieved even at low sample temperatures ● The reference electrolyte with its low silver ion content together with the temperature-insensitive platinum diaphragm prevent interference by precipitated silver. ● SenTix® electrodes are robust and shockproof. A special membrane glass and the plastic shaft ensure mechanical stability. ● SenTix® with liquid electrolyte – the optimized outflow speed rinses the platinum diaphragm free and prevents contamination by precipitates or dirt even during changes in temperature; with new membrane glass for even quicker response. ● SenTix® H and HW ground diaphragm electrodes allow the electrolyte outflow speed at the diaphragm to be altered. ● The clever sliding closure prevents the electrolyte from escaping during storage. ● Waterproof DIN or BNC plugs, either plug head system or with fixed cables, can be selected.
