Permutit® Multiport Valve The Permutit® Multiport Valve performs the function of five individual valves. Already proven in thousands of applications, the Permutit® Multiport Valve has been utilized on all types of filters, softeners and demineralizers within the industrial and municipal water treatment sectors.

In addition to not requiring an air supply, many plant personnel prefer the Multiport Valve due to its long-term reliability, simplicity of operation and ease of maintenance. The Multiport is available for completely automatic operation requiring only electric power for operation or it can be ordered for manual operation.
For installations with existing Permutit® Multiport Valves, our factory-reconditioning program can return your valves to optimum performance. Our personnel will completely disassemble your valves, submit a detailed list of recommendations and repair, repaint and return your valves to your plant for re-installation or to be put into your inventory as a spare. With reconditioned valves, we offer a one-year warranty.

For systems with individual valves, one Multiport Valve can be utilized to replace up to five individual valves. Our customer support team can assist you in determining the optimum operating scheme for your operation and assist your personnel for a smooth changeover. For plants with new or increased water treatment needs, we can supply an entire water treatment system equipped with Multiport Valves.
Safety, Maintenance and Lubrication When working near or performing maintenance on any rotating equipment, extreme care should be taken to ensure maintenance personnel are adequately trained and protected with the appropriate safety equipment, such as safety glasses with rigid side shields or a face shield. Maintenance personnel should avoid wearing loose or dangling clothing, necklaces, rings, earrings or other items that could become entangled in the machinery. Slide Lubrication Multiport Valves must be lubricated on a regular basis with the silicone lubricant that is item 67 on the Parts List to ensure optimum, long-term performance. This is the only lubricant approved for use with the Multiport Valve. For normal operating conditions, the lubricant must be applied on a weekly basis at a minimum. For high temperature operating conditions, short service runs with frequent regenerations or other adverse conditions, the valve should be lubricated more frequently. To ensure the lubrication process is completed as based upon the operating conditions, a record should be maintained indicating when each valve is lubricated. Failure to apply the lubricant as required will result in excessive wear to the internal sliding parts and valve leakage. A hand operated, manual valve that no longer turns easily and an automatic valve that chatters are both indications the valve is long overdue for lubrication and excessive wear may have already occurred.
For automatic valves, the power supply to the control box must first be disconnected before the lubrication process is begun. The following steps apply to both automatic and manual valves: 1. Close the inlet and outlet isolation valves. 2. Open a manual vent or sample valve to relieve the pressure on the valve. 3. With the valve in the SERVICE position, use a grease gun to inject a small quantity of lubricant through each of the fittings located at the rear of the valve. The number of fittings will depend upon the size of the valve. 4. Using the hand crank, rotate the valve to the WASH position and lubricate again, so the internal tubes direct the lubricant between the sliding surface of the rotating slide and the stationary port plate. 5. Turn the valve several complete rotations to ensure distribution of the lubricant. 6. Return the valve to the SERVICE position. 7. For automatic valves, reconnect the power. 8. Open the inlet and outlet isolation valves. Gear Case Lubrication On a monthly basis, the oil in the valve gear case should be checked to ensure it is at a level that will result in splash lubrication of gearing. The oil continued on page 11

Multiport Valve Operation
Service During Service, raw water enters the valve and flows downward from the top of the vessel to the bottom. The treated water is collected and directed through the Multiport Valve to service.
Backwash During the Backwash cycle, raw water enters the Multiport Valve and flows upward from the bottom to the top of the vessel. The water then returns to the valve and flows out to the drain.
Regeneration During the Regeneration cycle, raw water enters the valve and draws in the regenerating solution using an external ejector (optional). The regenerant solution flows downward through the bed to the bottom of the vessel, returns to the valve and then flows out to the drain.
Rinsing During the Rinse cycle, raw water enters the valve and flows downward from the top to the bottom of the vessel where the water is directed through the valve to the drain.

should be changed every six months using SAE 80W90 gear oil. Care should be taken so dirt or water does not enter the gear case, as this will contaminate the oil. Do not overfill as this will result in oil leakage.

To replace the port plate gasket (3) in an unlined valve when the old port plate is in serviceable condition, completely clean the gasket side of the port plate using a flat tool. Apply fresh gasket cement (3M Scotch Grip 2141or equivalent) to the gasket side of the port plate and to the port plate side of the port plate gasket and cement the surfaces together. Then install the port plate with the cemented gasket as outlined in Step 6.

To replace the port plate (4) in a lined valve, the old sealant between the port plate and the body will need to be completely removed. Be extremely careful when cleaning the surfaces of the lined body, so the lining is not damaged. Apply new sealant (68) to the cleaned surfaces of the body that come in contact with the port plate. The sealant will serve as filler for any minor irregularities on the seating surfaces and make the port plate gasket unnecessary. Install the port plate, replace the fillister head screws (5) and remove any extraneous sealant. Then check and adjust for flatness using the techniques in Step 6.

Insert new bonnet gasket (2).
Replacement of Slide and Port Plate Note: The parenthetical numbers are the item numbers as shown in the exploded parts drawing. After extended operation, increased leakage may occur. This may manifest itself as flow out of the backwash and/or rinse ports or internal bypassing of hard water to service. It usually results from excessive wear to the sliding parts, damage to the port plate gasket (3) or scoring due to foreign matter being wedged between the slide surface (6) and the port plate (4). To replace these parts: 1. Remove the packing nuts (46) and grease (46) fittings. 2.
Remove the cap screws (15).

Using appropriate lifting equipment to support the weight of these parts, lift off the bonnet (8) from the body assembly. The slide assembly (6) will be removed with the bonnet.

Examine the condition of the slide and port plate. If the slide assembly is worn, slip it off the slide shaft (11) and replace it with a new part. Note: The slide casting and facing are integral parts and must be replaced as an assembly. Before replacing the slide, lubricate the slide shaft with silicone lubricant (67). Be sure the slide shaft keys (83 and 84) are in place. For lined valves, ensure the valve packing rings (64) and retainers (63) are installed before the slide assembly (6) is placed on the slide shaft (11). One ring and one retainer should be placed on each side of the slide spring (7). If the port plate (4) and/or the port plate gasket (3) are worn, remove the fillister head screws (5) and lift the port plate off the body (1). To replace the port plate (4) in an unlined valve, the old port plate gasket (3) will need to be completely removed. Using a flat tool, clean off the gasket seating surfaces of the body (1). When replacing the port plate and gasket with new parts, the port plate gasket will be shipped cemented in place to the port plate. Install the new gasket and port plate, replace and tighten securely the fillister head screws (5) and then back off the screws by ¼ turn. It is extremely important that the port plate, as installed, is flat at all locations to within 0.002”. To check this, use a machinist’s straight edge and a 0.002” feeler gauge to verify the flatness over the entire surface. If it is not flat, adjust the tightening of the fillister head screws (5) and recheck to achieve the specified flatness.
10. Reassemble the remaining parts of the valve in reverse order from the disassembly procedure. Do not use the valve for at least one hour before admitting water to ensure the sealant cures properly.
