5. Description of the item and its compontens The permanent edge protection system “Elite” is made by tubular uprights 60x30x2 (3) and by two horizontal elements: the handrail and the intermediate railing (1-2). The railings are connected to each other thanks to the conification at the end. (6) . The upright (3) has a plate welded on its base (4) used for fixing the system to the surface (5).

6. Expected use and limitations This edge protection system is made and certified as a protection against falling from above during the phase of access to machinery. This parapet can carry a person that is resting on it or that is falling against it.. The user must control the efficiency of the anchorage (in reference to the loads recommended in this manual) according to the actual conditions of the surfaces on which the system has to be installed.

The impropriate installation of the parapet could cause fallings or injuries!

7. General terms of use and usage examples The use of this fall protection system requires certain employment conditions:        

If a curb or a wall at least 150 mm tall are absent, a toe-board must be installed; Minimum height of the toe-board : 150 mm; The upper edge of the toe-board must be at least 150 mm over the working surface; Minimum height of the parapet compared to the decking: 1100 mm; The maximum opening between two segments of the guard-rail (in the case that it’s discontinued) must be between 75 mm e 125 mm. If the space is wider than 125 mm a gate must be installed; The space between the railings (handrail, intermediate railing and toe-board) must be equal or smaller than 500 mm; The space between the lower edge of the toe-board and the walking surface must be smaller than 10 mm. MAXIMUM DISTANCE between the posts is 1500mm

8. Handling & Storage

Whoever interacts with the equipment in any way must strictly comply with the recommendations described below:      

The operations of packaging, handling, transport and unpacking must be performed only by qualified personnel with perfect knowledge of the equipment, referring to the accident prevention regulations in force; Handling equipment for lifting and carrying must be intact and able to execute safely the operations required, taking into account the size, weight, protruding/delicate parts and the center of gravity of the equipment; Avoid inappropriate handling and use; especially avoid performing maneuvers if outside of your own field of expertise and responsibilities; Always wear work gloves and safety shoes; Never put your hands or any part of the body under raised components/suspended loads; Do not wear rings, watches, bracelets or loose and dangling clothing during the assembly and disassembly of the equipment.

Handling The post is normally shipped in multi-packs and secured on pallets. The package handling must be done with a lift with forks that can move at least a weight as heavy as the one of the packaging, as indicated in the delivery receipt. The unpacking operations are limited to the elimination of plastic protection and fastenings used to secure the items on pallets.

The plastic material used for packaging is a pollutant and it should not be burned (causes toxic fumes), neither dispersed in the environment but disposed of according to law. Collect every item of waste in special containers, according to the directions for the collection of waste.

Storage The item must possibly be stored in such a position as not to be subjected to forces that may damage its components avoiding contact with sharp edges. Must be stored in a dry and well ventilated space and in any case not in presence of water or other contaminants or corrosive.

9. Assembly and disassembly of the components

       

It is up to the user to verify that the structure to which the item will be fixed is actually capable of supporting the loads transferred (see point 4, page 4); During the assembly and disassembly phases, in addition to the risks associated with manual handling of loads or the use of equipment (drill fastening tools manual), there is a danger of falling into the void. Therefore it is necessary the use of other systems of prevention and protection, such as ropes fall, working platforms or other suitable and certified system; For the assembly and disassembly of the system use certified working platforms or equivalent structures; Before every use, the user must verify the absence of corrosion, damages to the materials and welds, as well as the absence of deformations or dents of each component; Eliminate any water and thoroughly clean all parts. If there is the presence of corrosion or deformation, the part must be replaced and tested by a competent person, whose written opinion -combined with traceability- will be binding for the purpose of reuse; In any case, the post must be inspected every year by competent personnel; The anchorage points must be verified by competent personnel at least every 6 months. If fall arrest has happened to the post, it should be immediately removed from service and tested by a competent person.

Assembly (fig. 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9)     

Use a working platform and/or the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); Fix to the wall the first upright (fig. 5, page 8); Position the second upright with a maximum interval of 150 cm (fig. 6, page 9); Insert the intermediate railing and the handrail through the uprights (fig. 7 page 9); then, tighten the screws on the uproghts in order to lock the horizontal railings (fig. 8 page 9); If the toe-board has to be installed, (see point 7 page 6), proceed with its installation: position it and fasten it to the uprights with the fixing system supplied by Metal House Srl.

Anchor the first upright to the wall, using 4 adequate bolts according to supporting the loads transferred (usual type M10). Make sure that the upright is perfectly perpendicular to the walking floor (fig.5)

FALL PROTECTION SYSTEM

Disassembly For disassembly, using a certified and safe working platform, loosen the screws on the uprights and remove the horizontal elements. Than, remove the anchors and the uprights..

The sequence of operations to safely disassembly the system must be such as to keep it, as much as possible, at work: therefore, remove the horizontal elements first (eg. boards). N.B.: While disassembling the protections it’s necessary to hold the components tight, in order to prevent dangers arising from the fall.

10. Maintenance   

The maintenance and testing must be performed by authorized personnel with considerable knowledge of the systems for temporary railing and safety practices. It is recommended to periodically check the state of conservation of the temporary guard rail posts, greasing the moving parts such as screws and pins. A good preservation of the surface of the post for temporary railing eliminates possible hazards from weakening (eg. due to corrosion).

The post must be inspected every year by competent personnel. Extra-ordinary maintenance actions must be registered in reference to the kind and the outcome. If fall arrest has happened to the post, it should be immediately removed from service and tested by a competent person. Inspection activities must be registered on card, which must be available to the user.
