Local shops and businesses will be creating wonderful displays in their windows, the bigger and brighter the better! The Big Switch On The big switch on takes place on Saturday 26th November, when the town’s Christmas lights will illuminate the streets with festive wonder and magic. This year we’re excited to officially start Christmas in Penzance! In the morning, the main roads through the town centre will be closed to cars to make way for the Farmer’s Market where shoppers can pick up some delicious produce, fresh from local farms. So grab a bite to eat and make sure to take something home for later. Local shops will transform their displays, creating their own stalls outside the shops to create a market that will rival Portobello Road! So wrap up warm and keep your eyes peeled as you wander the streets of Penzance for something truly special. A festive storytelling programme will be taking place throughout the town both inside shops and on the streets to really set the Christmas mood for all shoppers alike. So take a leisurely walk, listen to some festive music and tales and enjoy the best in local ingredients at one of the food stalls.

Festive Saturdays Continuing with the street shopping experience, local shops will again turn their businesses onto the streets with their own stalls, selling their wares in a more traditional way. The storytelling programme will be running again throughout the town and streets, so if you can’t make the first weekend you won’t miss out on great stories. Throughout the two days there will be a comprehensive music and entertainment programme to bring the town alive with the sound of music and laughter, as local performers arrive, in festive spirit, to entertain audiences. If you find the usual Christmas rush stressful, why not try a different experience in Penzance with a more relaxed style of shopping? Don’t stress about crowds and busy shops, with local businesses creating stalls outside you’re free to browse without getting hot under the collar. Penzance’s local retailers are sure to give a more personal touch to any shopper’s experience both in product and expertise – so don’t be shy to ask for help.

Reindeer! As we get closer to the big day, the Christmas festivities get bigger and better. Santa’s reindeer will be outside the Market House in the centre of town for all to see. Watch your kids faces light up as they get up close to a real reindeer – a sure fire way to get into the Christmas spirit! And not forgetting the Humphry Davy celebrations where the town celebrates the work of the Penzance-born chemist, scientist and inventor. Davy is best remembered for his work in discovering several chemical elements for the first time and for inventing the Davy lamp – a safety lamp for miners to use in flammable atmospheres. Children from local primary schools will parade the town with their stunning homemade lanterns to celebrate the work of one of the greatest inventors Great Britain has ever produced. Shops will once again turn themselves inside out with market stalls outside their shop fronts. Be sure not to miss the market stalls in the centre of the town where you can pick up some unique Cornish Christmas gifts and something to eat and drink. Remember to take in the Penzance light trail before heading down to Mousehole,

Montol! Join the whole town in celebrating the iconic Montol Festival that takes place every year in Penzance to mark the winter solstice. Expect dancing, masked revellers and fire displays at this colourful festival unique to Penzance. Incorporating Cornish traditions of the past, the Montol Festival invites you to come along and marvel at the wonderful costumes and masks of the dancers and watch some incredible displays from professional fire performers. The festival is well-established among revellers from Penzance and beyond and encapsulates the spirit of the town. Some masks are ornate and beautiful like those seen in Venice, whilst some are carved to replicate animal faces! Costumes vary from ball gowns to tatters, but whatever you’re wearing when you watch the Montol celebrations, you’ll want to join in! The first procession at 4pm starts at Causewayhead, marking the setting sun. At 5pm the fire performers appear on the street casting shadows and light. The main procession of the day starts at 6pm from Chapel Street, finishing at the Princess May Recreation Ground where the midwinter fire is lit! Festivities carry on until past 10pm for those wanting to see the final ceremony – you won’t want to miss it!

PB 2016 Sup--24__(2).indd 12

Penzance’s first Youth Market will also be taking place on the day where talented young people will sell their wares and strut their stuff! Come along and enjoy the music and entertainment and pick up some last minute presents whilst supporting the young entrepreneurs of Penzance. The final Farmers Market before Christmas will take place outside St John Hall on Friday 23rd December between 9am and 1pm. It’s your last chance to stock up on the quality local produce before the big day so be sure to get down there for final supplies for Christmas!

Christmas Windows Penzance is home to a wealth of artists and designers who live and work here throughout the year, using the town and its people as daily inspiration for their work. Having established its place in the art world, Penzance continues to draw in creatives who are charmed by the town and fascinated by its history. This year, Penzance BID has commissioned five spectacular Christmas windows by local artists that will be displayed in five pop-up shops around the town centre. Local businesses and shops have been invited to decorate their windows with exciting light themed displays as part of a competition for the best Christmas shop window. You have the chance to choose the winner of best Christmas shop window, so don’t forget to vote. Last entries by New Years Eve please.
