Cross Country I would like to congratulate the students on their fantastic effort at the Cross Country last week. It was wonderful to have 100% attendance and participation in the sleepover and carnival. I think this helped us win the overall trophy! I was very proud to be from Pentland State School on Friday as the students displayed excellent sportsmanship, behaviour and tried their very best! Congratulations to Althea Hurren, Skie Hankin and Chelsea Harris for winning age champion on the day. Well done!!

NAPLAN On Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th May students in years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN testing. The students will do four tests, including, numeracy, reading, language conventions and writing. We have been busy revising key concepts in preparation for the assessments and will expose those students sitting the test to similar formats of testing early next term.

The Pentland 4 As you are aware our priorities for 2015 are based around the Pentland 4. They are: S – Spelling M – Mathematics A – Attendance R – Reading T – Targets Please read further on to see our progress on these areas!

McGrath Family Reading Scholarship Eileen and Frank McGrath have kindly donated $100 each term towards a reading scholarship in memory of their mother. The recipient of this award is someone who has improved the most in reading throughout the term. This term, the winner of the scholarship is Althea Hurren. Althea improved 4 levels in reading this term and is only one level off reaching her end of year target. Congratulations Althea!

Classroom Capers Here we are again - end of Term 1! We have had a great term filled with fun new learning experiences. Our latest and greatest learning experience was making a bug catcher in Technology! All students had to design and create a device for collecting, observing and keeping the weird and wacky mini-beasts without harming them. The students did a fantastic job!

In Mathematics last week the students were learning how to collect, represent and interpret data. Students were asked to conduct surveys and use the information gathered to create bar graphs, picture graphs, dot plots and venn diagrams. Each student loved this mathematics concept and kept asking for more tasks!!

I’m a big believer in exercising the mind and body throughout the day to ensure students are pushing themselves mentally and physically in their learning pursuits. Luckily for us this term we have spent every morning running long distance laps practising for cross country. The students have improved out of sight during this period of time and this exercise in the morning has really set the students up for a great day of learning. They have been focused, relaxed and eager to achieve! Next term we will continue exercising in the mornings!

I hope you all have a great Easter break and I look forward to hearing the student’s stories as they return back for a bigger and better Term 2!! Ella James Classroom Teacher

Easter Egg Hunt On Wednesday 1st April, Pentland State School had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny! The school students and playgroup children enjoyed the morning hunting around the school grounds for delicious Easter Eggs. It was lovely to see the older students helping the younger children find their eggs. The children were allowed to take their eggs home to share with their family. Let’s hope they didn’t eat them all in one day!

P&C Movie Night

Date: Friday 15th May

The eKindy program is a comprehensive ‘at home’ kindergarten program for children in the year before Prep. The program is designed so that children living in rural and remote areas can engage in quality kindergarten experiences and maximise their learning as they play, create, imagine and discover. The program is supported by a qualified early childhood teacher and covers 15 hours of Kindergarten for 40 weeks a year (school terms only). The program aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework and the Queensland kindergarten learning guideline. Pentland State School, this year is supporting parents by running eKindy at the school one morning a week. The children are thriving in play, song, dance and discovery. Last week children came from far and wide to meet the teacher personally and engage in exciting learning activities.

This term has been a quiet term in the P&C with tuckshop and meetings. The P&C will be hosting a movie night on Friday 15th May. Dinner, dessert, popcorn and the movie will cost $8.00 per person. We hope to see you there! If you are interested in becoming an active member of our P&C, please come and see either Laura or myself. You don’t have to have children at the school! Easter Eggs In computer programs and other media an Easter Egg is a name given to some secret feature that was hidden there by the maker and becomes apparent if you do something unexpected. It might be a hidden menu item on a DVD, a hidden game or presentation in a piece of software, etc. Sometimes I feel like the real Easter message has become one of these Easter Eggs hidden in the Easter holiday. When we are up to our necks in chocolate eggs, Easter bunnies, family visits and long weekends away it's hard to see the real meaning of Easter. It's only if you do something unexpected and go to church on Easter Sunday that you may find the 'secret feature' that God gave us through Jesus. For what it's worth, I will be giving the Easter message in the Charters Towers Baptist Church this Easter Sunday. The church is now in its new home at 40 Hodgkinson St, the old Salvation Army church building just up from Herbert and Hall. We would love to see you there. Whatever you do this Easter, I wish you safety and enjoyment. Chappy Jarvis
