Pennecon Cleans Up for Summer In keeping with Pennecons commitment to the environment and to the community, Pennecon employees participated in this year’s Environment Week (June 2nd– 8th) by hosting three community clean ups and taking part in the CBC Morning Show’s 15 minute cleanup. Twenty-five Pennecon Ltd and Pennecon Heavy Civil Ltd. employees took to the streets of Paradise for the Town of Paradise Curby Clean-Up Day on May 24th. In only a few hours over one hundred bags of garbage were collected along Topsail Road between the Pennecon office and the TransCanada Highway exit. Concrete Team

On June 4th the Morning Show hosted a 15 Minute Clean-Up in St. John’s. Environment, Health and Safety staff gladly showed their support while helping to tidy up along the busy downtown water front. CBC Radio interviewed Environment Manager Deidre Puddister, who shared information about Pennecon’s annual clean-up events. Pennecon Energy staff participated in the St. John’s Clean and Beautiful clean up on June 6th. With over 45 employees from the Pennecon Energy Water Street office participating, we were able to collect trash all along Sudbury Street, Leslie Street, Alexander Street, Water Street and Victoria Park, and even along the Waterford River Walking trail.

With support from Pennecon Limited’s Health, Safety and Environment team, Pennecon’s concrete division participated in CBS’s 3 hour Challenge on June 7th. We cleaned up the local parking area near Little Pond on the Fox Trap Access Road, gathering enough garbage to fill two pickup trucks! HR and YOU Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Pennecon provides Employee and Family assistance services to employees and their family members, in an effort to support wellness. This program is a full service offering of counseling and health management services provided by the Company, at no cost to employees. Best Wishes Barb Pennecon would like to send best wishes for a happy retirement to Barb Lily. Barb retired on June 26 after almost 37 years of service with Pennecon. Barb worked as Payroll Administrator and we will surely miss having her around! We celebrated this important day with Barb by having a luncheon in her honor! It was a lovely event. A few words were spoken, some tokens of appreciation were shared and we sent Barb on her way. Barb will surely enjoy her well-deserved retirement, spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Everyone at Pennecon thanks Barb for her many years of service! All the best for a healthy and happy retirement!

Pennecon Donates to Province’s New Aquarium

Bob Rice Memorial Golf Tournament: Another successful year! On July 5, we held the 2013 Annual Bob Rice Memorial Golf Tournament at Glendenning Golf Course. More than 130 participants came together to toast former long service employee, Bob Rice and enjoyed a round of golf for a great cause. Each year, funds raised through this tournament are donated to Mobile Central High, in Bob’s memory. This year was another huge success with $10,000 being raised.

Lammy the Lumpfish

The Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium opened its doors on June 15th and is doing swimmingly in the first month of its inaugural season! Pennecon Limited kindly made a donation to this non-profit organization and sponsored one of the “Flirty and Voluptuous” tanks located in the beautiful Mini Aquarium. This exhibit is the summer home of many beautiful creatures, including a curious adult Lumpfish named Lammy. A space specifically designed to foster curiosity and wonder in old and young alike, the Mini Aquarium hopes to educate and inspire visitors towards action to keep our vast and breathtaking ocean healthy. Come check out this awe-inspiring attraction, open every day 10am-6pm until October 19th! At Pennecon, we were excited to be a part of this wonderful program.

The day began with a toast from Ches Penney and ended with a few words from Larry Puddister, Louise Rice (wife of late Bob Rice) and David Locke (principal of Mobile Central High). The winner of the tournament this year was Johnson Insurance. Congratulations!! The “Most Honest Team” prize was awarded to a Pennecon Team comprised of Dave Barrett, Josie Sheppard, Susan Houlihan and Mary Lynn Dalton! Other awards included: Female Closest to the Pin – Hilda Gillard, Capital Ready Mix; Male Closest to the Pin – Phil Ryan, Strongco Construction; Female Longest Drive – Tanya Wall, Mobile Central High; and Male Longest Drive – Shane Morris, Acme Financial Services. There were also numerous team prize draws and individual prize draws. “This tournament means a lot to our business community and everyone at Pennecon loves to be a part of it,” said Larry Puddister. “It was another successful year. “

Employee Profile: Timothy Bruce Saunders Tim Saunders is Operations Manager with Pennecon Energy Marine Base in Bay Bulls, NL and has been with Pennecon since 2004. Fresh out of Memorial University with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Tim was ready to work and found a home at Pennecon. Tim began with Pennecon Energy as Materials Coordinator for the Transocean – Henry Goodrich Refit Project in Bull Arm. It was here that Tim developed his skills in the office and warehouse environment, gaining valuable experience and becoming familiar with the offshore/marine industry. Once this project was completed, Tim was relocated to Bay Bulls and has been there ever since.

a professional athlete or phys-ed teacher. Tim and his family also love spending time at their cabin in Lethbridge, NL, fishing and snowmobiling. A little secret that people may not know about Tim is that he is a real at-home chef! Whenever he has the chance, Tim is whipping up a delicious meal for family and friends. Tim says that he truly enjoys working with Pennecon and applying his studies and skills in the “real world”. He finds it very rewarding to work with his team in Bay Bulls helping the company grow and succeed in the flourishing offshore industry. Tim is a great employee and we are happy that he found his home at Pennecon!

Over the years, Tim has advanced his career and experience through various supervisor, management and leadership courses supported by Pennecon. A native of Paradise, he still calls it home. A real family man, Tim lives with his wife, Lesley, their two children, Fayth who is two years old, and Lyla who is five months old, and their dog, Kado. “Family is everything to me; they’re what keeps me going and helps me strive to be the best, both at work and at home,” says Tim. A real sports enthusiast Tim is a huge fan of hockey, soccer and baseball. As a child, Tim was very involved in sports and is itching to get back at it. We were saddened to learn that despite the amazing efforts of her medical team, Hannah Genevieve Warren passed away on July 6, 2013 surrounded by her loved ones. Hannah’s story was recently posted in the Pennecon Newsletter highlighting the support Pennecon Energy and its team provided to Hannah and her family as they traveled to the Children’s Hospital of Illinois. Hannah was born with an extremely rare congenital abnormality known as tracheal agenesis (her trachea failed to develop). We offer our sincere condolences to the Warren family and will remember them in our thoughts and prayers.

Pennecon helps SPCA Walk for the Animals Employees at Pennecon have come together once again to lend a hand in raising funds for the SPCA. On June 22, Larry Puddister and his canine companion Axel, joined in the Walk for Animals to support the SPCA. Thanks to the generosity of Pennecon employees, we made a donation of $9,165. This money will go a long way in aiding this wonderful organization do what they do best: helping animals in St. John’s and around the province. A little extra excitement was added when we learned that Pennecon had raised the most money for the Walk and was awarded a Kindle Fire HD Tablet, the top prize. A name was drawn from all Pennecon employees who donated money to the cause and Scott Stagg at Allstar Rebar was the lucky winner. “It was another great Walk for the Animals for the SPCA and we were so happy to be a part of it,” said Larry Puddister, President and CEO of Pennecon. “This is one of the charities Pennecon helps out with every year. It’s a cause that means a lot to myself...and Axel.” This was a very rewarding event and Pennecon is happy to take part each year.

Heavy Civil: Camp Accommodations Project Heavy Civil is working diligently on a new camp accommodations at Muskrat Falls, Labrador. This is a very large design-build project that brings together many different talents and disciplines in getting the job done.

This Camp will accommodate over 1500 people on-site. It will include 11 three storey dormitories as well as a kitchen, dining and recreation complex. In total, 458 pre-fabricated modules will be set in place. Work has been taking place for the past eight months and the completion date is set for December 17, 2013. The 458 modules are being fabricated and shipped from five different locations throughout Eastern Canada and the United States. In addition to construction of the modular complex, this project also includes the supply and installation of electrical and mechanical site utilities such as site lighting, power distribution, water storage tank, pump house / chlorination building, a new waste water treatment plant, and all associated underground piping for domestic water, fire water supply and sanitary sewer. Final grading of the overall footprint with a Maintenance Grade 3 topping is also included. Pennecon Heavy Civil Limited is the General Contractor for the Project and is supported by Penney Energy Industrial Services and M & M Engineering Limited.

Pennecon Energy opens Grand Banks Warehousing

On April 27th and 28th, Concrete Products participated in the Annual Landscape & Garden Show at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay. This show was a great opportunity to showcase the many landscaping products this division offers. Concrete Products has a wide variety of landscape products available, and this Show provided the chance to put it on display for a large and targeted audience. Not only was the show a success, but Concrete Products won the Best Booth award. A much deserved win! It was an overall success for the team, reaching many potential consumers and taking home an award to boot. Great Job Concrete Products!

Pennecon Energy Grand Banks Warehousing (GBW) has officially opened its doors. Located in Bay Bulls, NL, near the Pennecon Energy Marine Base, this facility offers 10,000 sq ft of space for lease. GBW is now managing, leasing and operating a full service laydown and warehousing area, offering space to clients on a “build-to-suit” basis. This is a great project and should attract numerous businesses who wish to utilize the space! Congratulations on the Grand Opening!

Unlock the Potential ….Outpace the Competition …Strengthen the Bottom Line To help enhance communication within the Company, in April of 2013 we piloted an in-house Dale Carnegie communication training course. A group of Pennecon managers were invited to attend the well- known Dale Carnegie course. The course teaches participants how to communicate effectively, strengthen interpersonal relationships, manage stress and handle fast-paced changing environments. This course was hosted at our office at 1309 Topsail Road, by Mark Baldwin, a Dale Carnegie facilitator. Sessions were held one morning a week, over a nine week period. The pilot proved to be a huge success and was highly recommended by members of the first graduating class. We will continue the course offering as part of our training plan for managers and other approved employees.
