Fall 2008 Enrollment Profile Executive Summary The Fall 2008 Enrollment Profile for Penn State Altoona provides details about our student population following the official census date (Oct. 4-5, 2008). This census draws on information about students whose registration is complete, which means that they have completed the billing and payment process for the current semester. Comparison data from previous Fall semesters is also drawn following the census date. All data comes from the Penn State Data Warehouse. The Fall 2008 Enrollment Profile has continued to undergo changes since Fall 2006, based on the move of the Institutional Research Analyst to the Office of Planning and Assessment in December 2006, and discussions with key recipients of the profile.

Key changes to the Fall 2008 enrollment profile include: • Adding a summary table (1.B.) which provides a breakout of enrollment at Penn State Altoona by class year for gender, ethnicity, age and geography. • Adding a table (1.C.) that shows historical breakdown of class year. • Providing data in tables by class year (freshmen, sophomore, etc.) rather than semester standing. • Collapsed B.A and B.S. totals for Altoona majors into a single program total. Information on B.A. and B.S. enrollments were provided to program coordinators earlier in the semester. • For Tables 2.A. Altoona Majors by Class Year, 3.B. Ethnic Minorities in Altoona Majors, 3.C. Altoona Majors by Age and Gender, and 4.B. Graduation Summary, tables are organized by Penn State Altoona academic division, plus Common Year and Continuing Education. • Providing summary tables by Associate and Baccalaureate degrees and for the academic divisions and common year for Table 2.B. Altoona Majors by Geography. • Eliminating the GO-60 table (formerly 3.E.). • Placing Fall 2008 Enrollment by College by Class Year (1.D.), Altoona Majors by Geography (2.C.), and detailed tables of Enrollment in Altoona Majors vs. College of Initial Admission (2.D.) on the Office of Planning and Assessment webpage as Appendix B (http://www.altoona.psu.edu/opa/planning_indicators.htm ). Key findings from the Fall 2008 Enrollment Profile include: • The Headcount for Fall 2008 is down by 22 students over Fall 2007, but the full-time equivalent (FTE) is up slightly over Fall 2007 by 9.2. The FTE: headcount ratio is at an all-time high of 97%. Even though the Headcount is down, full-time students increased by 27, and part-time students decreased by 49 over Fall 2007 (Table 1.A.). • Over 77% of students are freshmen or sophomores, and only 18.8% of students are juniors or seniors. Over 80% of males are freshmen or sophomores, while less than 75% of women are freshmen or sophomores. Over 82% of students under 24 years of age are freshmen or sophomores, while 57.5% of students 24 years or older are juniors or seniors (Table 1.B.). • The percentage of Freshmen in Fall 2008 increased by 5.6% over Spring 2008, while the percentages of sophomores (-2.2%), juniors (-0.7%), and seniors (-2.0%) all fell (Table 1.C.). • Overall, the distribution of our enrollment among the colleges remains fairly stable, but Altoona College continues to see its percentage of enrollment decreasing from 34.5% in 2005 to 29.9% in 2008 (Table 1.D.). • The major with the largest number of students is 2LAAL (147), closely followed by BSBAL (145), ALHSS (126), 2NURS (110), and CJBA/CJBS (103) (Table 2.A.).

The total number of Altoona Upper-Division Majors fell for the second year in a row to 679, and is 91 students below the projection. Ten of Altoona majors were below their projections with CJ (-20), EEDAL (-18), PSYCH (-12), and HSFAL (-11) having the largest gaps between enrollments and projections. Five Altoona majors exceeded their projections, but only by a total 16 students, combined (Table 2.B.). Overall, 64% of Altoona majors are from our service area, 28% are from elsewhere in Pennsylvania, and nearly 8% are from out-of-state. Among baccalaureate majors, 62% are from our service area, 29% from elsewhere in Pennsylvania, and slightly over 8.5% are from out-ofstate (Table 2.C.). Arts and Humanities has the highest percentage of students from our service area (70%), followed by Education, Human Development and Social Sciences (66%). Business and Engineering has the lowest percentage of out-of-state students (5%), followed by Education, Human Development and Social Sciences (6%) (Table 2.C.). The percentage of students admitted to an Altoona Common Year fell to 48% in Fall 2008, while the percentage of students admitted to a University Park College or DUS increased for the third straight year to 49% (Table 2.D.). The number of students enrolled in minors has fallen from a high of 71 in Fall 2006 to a low of 40 in Fall 2008. Only one minor, Psychology, continues to have double-digit enrollments, and 5 minors have had no enrollments over the past 4 Fall semesters (Table 2.E.). The percentage of minority students enrolled in Fall rebounded to 12.2% in Fall 2008 after falling to 11.5% in Fall 2007, and the percentage of minority students in Altoona College (AL) rose from 8.9% in Fall 2007 to 9.7% in Fall 2008 (Table 3.A.). The largest number of minority students in Altoona majors are found in the Humanities and Social Sciences Common Year (ALHSS; 17), followed by CJBA/BS (15), PSCBA/PSCBS (11), and ALBUS and HFSAL (10) (Table 3.B.). Overall, 68% of the students aged 24 and older are female (237 of 349). OLEAD (100%), followed by NURN (61%), 2NURS (51%), and LASAL (48%) have the highest percentage of students aged 24 and older (Table 3.C.). After peaking at 25% in Fall 2005, the percentage of students who remain at Altoona two years after matriculating has fallen steadily to 19% in Fall 2008 (Table 4.A.). Overall, the total number of graduates in 2007-08 fell to 408, the first decline in over a decade. The number of Associate degree graduates continued its long decline from 148 in 2002-03, falling below 100 to 88 for the first time in 2007-08. The number of baccalaureate graduates fell for the first time to 320 in 2007-08 (Table 4.B.).

* FTE means "full-time equivalent." FTE is calculated by adding the number of students who are enrolled full-time (12.0 or more credits in a given semester) to the sum of credits per semester for each part-time student divided by 15. ** F:H ratio means the "FTE: Headcount ratio." This is calculated by dividing the FTE by the headcount. It is useful to estimate enrollments and tuition revenue, and to compare year to year changes in our enrollment, especially when asked to project enrollments mid-year to final counts in upcoming semesters. Ratio typically is 94-96%, but has been as low as 92% in the last ten years.

2.B. Altoona Upper-Division Majors & Projections How to Read this Table: Projections are in italics and are listed in parentheses for Fall 2004-2008 with numbers beginning in 2009 are projections. Projections were reviewed and revised in Feb. 2004, Feb. 2006, and Feb. 2008 as part of the preparation of enrollment plans. For Fall 2007 and Fall 2008 numbers in Blue are above projections and numbers in Red are below projections. New programs are will be determined by strategic planning process. Sub-totals (in bold) are added to provide the total upper division enrollment. • •

Five Altoona majors exceeded their projections, but only by a total 16 students, combined.

* The Common Year Codes, formatted A L _ _ _ , allow a student to formally indicate to the University their intent to pursue an Altoona College major, prior to entering the major via the change of major or entrance to major processes. The percentages for all students admitted to AL Majors fluxuates slightly each year, but has been consistently between 47-50% for the past five years. The yearly percentages of students admitted to DUS or a UP college also fluxuates slightly, with the exception of fall 2006. The counts and percentages in the summary do not total 100%, as students admitted as provisional, or to the colleges of Abington, Berks, Behrend, Capital and the Commonwealth (College) are excluded from the calculations in this report. 4.A. Enrollment Snapshot, Matriculation Plus two Years FA01-FA06 Comparison of Admissions, Enrollments and Change of Location Total PDACC with select counts two years beyond the base year How to read this report: The left-hand columns of Base Year (BY) review the target and actual freshmen matriculating during the summer and fall semesters. Two years after the base year (BY+2), we can see the number of juniors enrolled at Altoona that will complete their degrees at Altoona, and the number of students who have relocated to University Park for the BY+2 academic year. For example: in SU/FA02 admissions year, our total freshmen PDACC was 1396. Two years later, in FA04, 329 total students were enrolled as Altoona majors, and during the same time period, 779 had relocated to University Park. •

After peaking at 25% in Fall 2005, the percentage of students who remain at Altoona two years after matriculating has fallen steadily to 19% in Fall 2008. Bacca
