OIL PAINTING Tuesday, March 29-May 31, 6:30-9 pm (10 sessions) $180 Pfac member / $195 non-member Instructor: Brian Murphy Join Brian, an experienced landscape painter, and explore oil painting as a beginning, intermediate or experienced student. The beginning student will learn fundamentals of oil painting. If you have been painting for a while but want to loosen up your style or brush up on your techniques, this is the class for you. Learn how to attain a more spontaneous look to your paintings and broader brushstrokes while achieving a certain amount of detail for realism. Learn to use a limited palette and achieve a wide range of colors while retaining a balanced and harmonious painting. Weekly critiques. Beginners: call for materials list. Limit: 14 students. Pfac, Spring Classes, Page 2 WATERCOLOR PLUS Wednesday, March 30-June 1, 6:30-9 pm (10 sessions) $180 Pfac member / $195 non-member Instructor: Bill Hobler Begin or continue your journey toward painting in watercolor, from sketching to completing your painting; or expand your skills using watercolor media. If you ever wished to express yourself in this luminous medium, here’s a course that encourages you to learn watercolor techniques – from basic through advanced. Whether you work in a representational style or abstract, you will be encouraged toward finished works that lead to your own fulfillment. The course will address drawing, basic techniques, color theory, image and color composition, perspective, atmospheric perspective, reflections, photographs as source and people in paintings. The objective is to provide all the skills, knowledge and confidence to continue in intermediate and advanced artistic expression in watercolor. Limit: 14 students. EVENING WATERCOLOR Thursday, March 31-June 9 (no class April 21), 6:30-8:30 pm (10 sessions) $170 Pfac member / $185 non-member Instructor: Jim Dees This is the place to start, whether you eventually want to focus on watercolor, gouache or acrylic, or combine your medium with collage. Learn to paint pictures that express your intent and to critique your own paintings with an artist’s vocabulary. Class will begin with a short lecture/demo and proceed to painting subjects of your choosing. Line, composition, value, color, texture… all the basics will be covered. And advanced students will get personal attention, too. This session we’ll also move into some experimental areas – abstract and non-objective painting, Eastern watercolor techniques and collage. DRAWING 101 Thursday, March 31-June 2, 10 am-12 noon (10 sessions) $170 Pfac member / $185 non-member Instructor: Bill Hobler Time to put away your fears and learn to draw in this upgraded 10-week class! Newport News artist Bill Hobler plans a fun and entertaining course that will give you all the right tools to put you on the path to better drawing. Understanding that drawing is the foundation for the visual arts, you will learn about placement, proportion and values while developing techniques that will facilitate seeing and composing. The goal is simple – to help you develop your ability to draw what you want the viewer to see. Experienced artists can use this as a refresher course. Limit: 14 students. MASTER CLASS: ADVANCED WATERCOLOR Friday, April 1-June 10 (no class June 3), 9:30 am-12 noon (10 sessions) $195 Pfac member / $210 non-member Instructor: Betty Anglin In this Master Class, advanced students and experienced artists perfect their art under the guidance of master watercolorist Betty Anglin. The focus is on materials, techniques, design, subject matter and personal expression in the watercolor medium. SATURDAY BEGINNING DRAWING Saturday, April 9-June 4 (9 sessions), 10:15 am-12:15 pm $155 Pfac member / $170 non-member Instructor: Tyler Ashworth The goal of Beginning Drawing is to build a strong drawing foundation on which the artist can build (in order to paint or sculpt you first have to learn how to draw) and to create several exciting finished products. Students learn basic knowledge about drawing including shading, blending, hatching, cross hatching, stippling, perspective and texture working with still life and portraits. Students will use several types of drawing tools including a variety of pencils, ink, and pastels. Limit: 15 students. INTRODUCTION TO WEAVING FOR AGES 10+ Saturday, April 9, 16, 30, May 7 (no class April 23), 1-3 pm $80 Pfac members / $95 non-members Instructors: Helen Cadogan and Ingrid Kross In this four-session workshop, young students will be introduced to weaving using a variety of looms and techniques by two noted weavers. After a review of the basics, students will jump right in and weave with various yarn and mixed media, to complete 2-3 projects during the class. Tuition includes a $5 materials fee. ART APPRECIATION: A SURVEY OF MODERN SCULPTURE Thursday, April 28 & May 5, 5:30-6:30 pm, (2 sessions) $15 Pfac members / $20 non-members Instructor: Michael Preble This two-session class is held in conjunction with our spring exhibitions of sculpture by the Chicago artist Richard Hunt and Newport News artist Greg Henry on exhibit in the Ferguson and Ranhorne galleries. We’ll start in the early decades of the 20th century with Constructivist and Cubist sculpture, and other modern movements. Then we’ll move through a variety of popular styles and expressions and end our study with a view of public sculpture. Must register by April 21. Limit: 15 students -MORE-
