Acknowledgements Many people have helped and supported me in different ways during the past years of my studies and my PhD research. First of all, I would like to thank my supervisors Jan Kornelis Dijkstra, René Veenstra and Siegwart Lindenberg for their help and input in the conduction of my research throughout the past four and a half years. In 2010 I have applied at the ICS and started working with you on my own research project. In this time you have shown trust in my ability to conduct this research and have given me all the freedom to develop my own ideas and to work on my research independently, yet you were available for advice when needed.

Thank you also to Toon Cillessen who has inspired me to combine my interest in workand organizational psychology with my interest in adolescent development, whose research on peer relationships has greatly inspired the ideas that I have been working on in my PhD research and who has helped my write my research proposal in the last stage of my Research Master at the Radboud University in Nijmegen.

There are many people without whom I could not have performed my research - too many to name each and every one of them individually. My thanks go to all the respondents who have supported me by taking part in my studies. Thank you also to the College van Bestuur of the educational institute at which I performed my data collection, to the directors of the different schools that have taken part in my study who have given me the opportunity to approach their students for my research, and to all the teachers who have helped me coordinate my work and who have agreed to let their students participate during their class hours. I would also like to thank one person in particular without whom my project and the data collection never could have taken place and who has supported me throughout the past years. Albert, thank you for helping me make this project happen and for the inspiring meetings.

For the past four years I have been a member of the WALM research group. Thank you for your support and feedback on my research and the inspirational meetings: Anke Munniksma, Ashwin Rambaran, Beau Oldenburg, Chaïm La Roi, Gijs Huitsing, Jelle

In 2014 I have been given the opportunity to visit Katariina Salmela-Aro in Helsinki twice to work with her and her great team on the FinEdu data. Katariina, your input and advice has greatly helped me in the finishing phase of my PhD. Thank you for all your help, your hospitality, and for introducing me to avantouinto. Thank you also to Jukka Vuori and Mikko Nykänen from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. During my time in Finland I have met many people who have helped me to not get lost in Helsinki and who have made me feel at home. Thank you Mette Ranta, Julia Möller, Florencia Sortheix, Julia Dietrich and all the others who have made my time there a great experience.

Mein großer Dank gilt auch meiner Familie. Vielen Dank, dass ihr mich stetig bei all meinen Vorhaben unterstützt habt.

Finally, my deepest gratitude goes to Thomas. Thank you for all your help and support throughout the past years and during all stages of my dissertation research.
