“The Merit Cafe is Final HERE!” by Larry Lourcey

Interest in competition is at an all time high in PPA right now. Unfortunately, many of the new entrants have no idea where to begin - which can lead to a very frustrating experience. To help with this, we will be reprising our popular interactive learning experience at IUSA this year: The Merit Cafe. The Merit Cafe is a chance for eperienced competitors to present a 30 minute mini-program on a specific aspect of competition. From paper choice to presentation, maybe one of the twelve elements- its up to you. We all have different visions of the process that we are passionate about. The Merit Cafe is a chance to mentor interested photographers and inspire them to compete. The Cafe will take place near the print display and mentor booths. Please help spread the word about this great member benefit!

Dear PEC and Jurors, After twenty something years of having the honor and privilege of serving as an Affiliate Juror, I have decided to relinquish my judging role. My health won’t allow me the stamina to continue. I cannot tell you how much these years have meant to me. Each juror, chairperson and staff worker deserves much respect, admiration and affection. And it’s been my good fortune to make some wonderful friends along the way. Special “hats off” to PEC for maintaining their goal of pursuing excellence with an open mind and a high bar. I remain one happy guy with great memories of you all! Thank you, my Family, Gene (Gino) Lista

MOT T S M IL ITA RY M U S E U M by Andrew Jenkins In November a group of us recently had a chance to visit Warren Motts and Motts Military Museum in Groveport, Ohio. After Warren announced his retirement from judging so he could spend more time on his museum, especially on his Nine-Eleven exhibit, many jurors showed interest in a visit to his awesome museum. So I thought it would be cool to have a little surprise trip. I contacted Warren’s wife Daisy to share this idea with. She was super excited and the surprise was on. I called Warren up and told him that I would be in town and wanted to bring a friend over to see his museum.

Motts Military Museum, continued Little did he know that when I arrived I would have over 35 friends with me! When we showed up Warren was so surprised. We spent the next 3 hours listening to a man who is so full of passion for what he does I think I can safely say that everyone was blown away! Most of us became members of his museum that day. Warren is currently raising funds to build his Nine-Eleven wing on his museum. I would encourage all of you to consider a donation to this incredible cause. If you were unable to visit the Motts Military Museum on this trip, this is something that you must do some time soon. And be sure to ask for the best tour guide ever ...... Warren Motts! Please check out the museum online at www.mottsmilitarymuseum.org

Let’s Ride This Wave! by Sarah Johnston Looks like we are headed for another WONDERFUL year in the Mentor Booths at IUSA. Still looking for a couple of judges to step up and help out. We are offering walk-ups this year as well as all of the appointments we have, which are many. So if you can find an hour or two in your crazy IUSA schedule please let me know asap. [email protected]. I am sure we can put you to work helping members improve their daily work and competition images, raising the bar for us all. What I have seen in the past few years, aside from the increase in interest, is how wonderfully so many of the booth participants have been doing in competition. Many new degree holders and many more well on their way. The interest and excitement in competition and the Master of Photography Degree is so good to see. After all isn’t that why we all do this? With the Walking Tours and the Merit Café also available the members have so many avenues for asking questions and gaining knowledge about the process and ways to succeed. Thank you to all for your help.

PE C Po l i c y C h a n g e s ~ P le a s e Re v iew ! The Makeup Of A Jury Panel The judging makeup for all categories will consist of three jurors qualified in the specific category and three additional jurors from the International Jurors list qualified in any category and a Jury Chairman from the Approved International Jurors list. In’s & Out’s All photographs receiving initial scores of 81-78 will be reviewed by the jury automatically and evaluated a second time. The title of the photograph is to be read during this review. The final score will be the official score on these and any other challenged photographs. During the review process it will take a “simple majority to move the image to “Deserving of a Merit” or “Above Average” Alternate Juror The Alternate will now be randomly selected by the computer and will change on every image. Once you are the alternate on an image, you will remain the alternate on that image throughout the judging. SO YOU WANT TO BECOME A JUROR If you are thinking of becoming an Approved Affiliate Juror, first ask yourself this question; “Am I personally and professionally qualified to be a PPA Approved Affiliate Juror?” The following are a few guidelines to help you ascertain whether you are qualified. Are you: 1. A current member of PPA? 2. A Master of Photography or Master Artist degree holder? Have you: 3. Entered the Affiliate or International Competition in the last two years? 4. Had entries accepted into the International Exhibit and/or Loan Collection in the last two years? 5. Acquired a minimum of 18 Exhibition Merits? 6. Attended the “Recognizing A Merit Image” class within the last (4) four years. 7. PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN, WEDDING and ARTIST APPLICANTS - Judged in at least four different official state association competitions in the last four years and received written evaluations from at least six Approved Affiliate Jurors? 8. Attend the Jurors Refresher Course at IPC at least once during the four year period. (It is recommended you attend each year, to stay current on new policies and procedures). 9. Completed the “Critique Session”. Critiqued a series of images from home using the software currently used by Approved Jurors. Completed through the IPC Manager. If you can answer yes to all of the above questions, you are well on your way to becoming a member of the Approved Affiliate Jurors List. Continued on following page

Policy Changes, continued To begin, you personally must complete an official application (An application may be downloaded from www.PPA.com. or by contacting the IPC Manager. If you have taken the “Recognizing a Merit Image” class, an application is enclosed in your notebook). Juror Responsibilities New policy pertaining to critiques. PEC 5.7.b 3)Jurors failing to finish critiques on time will be suspended for one year from judging IPC and Districts. The second infraction may result in removal from the jurors list.
