How to lay clay paving

Wienerberger clay paving products can be easily laid by a DIY enthusiast, or your stockist can provide details of a local paving contractor. The following covers some basic principles of installation, and full laying details are available on request. Step 1 Sub-base A sub-base is essential for driveways or areas for vehicular use and should be constructed using a Type 1 stone sub-base material compacted to a depth of at least 150mm. An existing drive can be used as a base, providing that it is sound and the finished paving level will be at least 150mm below the house damp proof course level. For general garden areas, a sub-base thickness of 75-100mm is recommended. If you are unsure, seek advice from your contractor. Step 2 Edge restraint A permanent edge restraint around the perimeter is necessary to keep the finished paving firmly in place and stop any spreading. This may be provided by existing structures such as walls; if not or if you would like to make an attractive feature of the edging in its own right, you can choose from purpose-made curved or angled edgings. It is important that edgings are bedded and jointed together with mortar. Step 3 Bedding course Prepare a bedding course using bedding sand, compact it and screed smooth to the desired level, before laying pavers on clean, sharp, natural sand, compacted using a small plate compactor to an even depth of 50mm.

12

Step 4 Laying pavers Lay whole pavers in the pattern of your choice – herringbone pattern is recommended for drives or other areas used by cars, whilst herringbone, running or basketweave bonds are all suitable for patios or paths. Drainage should be provided using standard gullies or channels. Pavers should be laid by hand to your predetermined pattern, making sure that there is a minimum 2mm gap between them to allow for jointing sand – the gap can be increased to a maximum of 5mm if necessary. Cut any infill or edge pieces that are necessary using a block cutter designed specifically for clay pavers. Step 5 Filling joints For 200 x 100mm pavers, fill the joints by brushing fine sand (not bedding sand) into the joints. With cobbles and slimpave, fill the joints with bedding sand and apply a top dressing of fine sand after compaction. Step 6 Compaction When the pavers have been laid, the joints filled with fine sand and the surface sand removed, use a small plate compactor fitted with a rubber sole to vibrate the pavers into position on the sand bed. Repeat the sanding and compacting operation until joints are fully filled. Remember to monitor the joints and top them up with sand for some weeks after completion as initial settlement is inevitable. Maintenance Terca clay pavers are a low maintenance product. In the short term all they require is occasional sweeping and sand top-up from time to time. In the longer term, pressure washers can be used to remove dirt and return paving to ‘as new’ condition.
