½ yard of fabric 2 for heart B Warm and Natural Cotton Batting Steam-A-Seam II sheets Robison-Anton 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread Sewing thread Bobbin thread Pinking shears Chalk marker or fabric marking pen

Fabrics:

We used a variety of different fabrics for our hearts. The patchwork pieces need to be large enough to cover the defined areas plus ¼” seam allowace. The first color of the embroidery design stitches out the patchwork areas. Find the patch you are working on and then find a scrap larger than the defined area.

Cut:

From base fabric: Two pieces 14” wide x 52” long for base and backing Four strips 2¾” long x width of fabric for binding From cotton batting: One piece 14” x 52”

Embroider:

1. Hoop Cut-A-Way Light stabilizer in your 200mm x 200mm hoop. 2. Insert a size 90 embroidery needle. 3. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. Note: You will use this thread for the entire embroidery. Do not change thread at the color changes. 4. Stitch color 1. This traces the patchwork shapes. 5. Place fabric over patch A, right side up. 6. Stitch color 2. 7. Trim ¼” outside the stitching for a ¼” seam allowance. 8. Place fabric over patch B, right side up. Once you have determined that it is the correct size, flip it over so the wrong side of the fabric is up. Align so that the edge of the fabric extends ¼” or more over the line between A and B.

9. Sew Color 3, stitching the B patch in place. 10. When the stitching is complete, flip the fabric over so it is right side up and covers B. Finger press the seam. 11. Place fabric over patch C, right side up. 12. As before, flip it up and place over patch B, letting the fabric extend ¼” over the line between B and C. 13. Stitch color 4. 14. Place fabric over patch D, right side up. 15. Flip to wrong side and place over patches A, B and C letting the fabric extend ¼” over the line. 16. Stitch color 5. 17. Place fabric over patch E, right side up. 18. Flip to wrong side and place over patch A letting the fabric extend ¼” over the line. 19. Stitch color 6. 20. Be sure to trim any extra fabric out of the point of the heart so it doen’t get caught in the next stitching. Color 7 will stitch around the outside of the heart, securing all the fabric edges. 21. After color 7 is complete, place Light & Soft Fuse-On over the embroidery with the “glue” side up. Stitch color 8. 22. Remove from the hoop and trim around the heart with pinking shears. Note: Using pinking shears to trim around a curved edge eliminates the need for clipping the curve. If you trim with regular scissors, you will need to clip the curves as well. 23. Clip into the inside corner at the top of the heart. 24. Cut a 2” slit in the center of the Light & Soft Fuse-On stabilizer. 25. Turn and press. The Light & Soft Fuse-On will fuse the edges together giving you a nice, crisp edge. 26. Repeat process for a total of 5 patchwork hearts.
