January 2015

The Chaplaincy of Aquitaine is part of the Church of England Diocese in Europe, working in partnership with The Intercontinental Church Society, in ministry to people who speak English. It covers Gironde, Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne. CHURCH SERVICES, JANUARY 2015 (see Around the Chaplaincy for location details) Despite our best efforts, an error can occur with regard to the service dates, times, and locations indicated. Please check the website (www.churchinaquitaine.org) to verify a service you plan on attending, to make sure that you have the latest details.

In January 2015 we will start a new training course for a new ‘cohort’ of Congregational Worship Leaders in Training.

The course will be open to all. You might like to explore whether leading worship is something for you, or you might be interested to learn more about some of the topics that are discussed. Besides topics related to leading worship and preaching, we will cover topics of more general interest like: Old & New Testament; Lectio Divina; Anglicanism; the Creeds; Liturgy; the Spiritual Disciplines etc. Details of all modules can be found on the Chaplaincy website www.churchinaquitaine.org

There were 50 people at the bilingual Carol Service on 19th December. After the service, the mulled wine and stollen were much appreciated and there was a great time of fellowship. The collection of 200€ will go to Resto du Coeur and 100€ to the Bishop’s Advent Appeal. Thank you for all for your generosity to those in need.

ur traditional Service of Lessons and Christmas Carols on Sunday 14 December was led by Revd Liz Morris. The church looked splendid with Paddy Atkinson’s candelabra decorating the altar and with all the candles lit on the Advent wreath. We enjoyed singing our favourite carols, including ‘Il est ne, le Divin Enfant’, whilst the Choir gave us the beautiful, atmospheric Polish carol, ‘Infant Holy, Infant Lowly’, Andrew Carter’s ‘Mary’s Magnificat’ and ‘The Coventry Carol’. For the final Reading, Liz gave us John Betjeman’s poem ‘Christmas’, which even though written in 1954 still has resonances in its musings upon ‘those tissued fripperies, Those sweet and silly Christmas things’, and with the wonderful verse,

After the service, the congregation gathered at the back of the church for mulled wine and mince pies. Our heartfelt thanks to Liz, Richard, Marjorie, the Choir and all the cooks, for arranging such a wonderful service and refreshments! On Christmas Day, a surprisingly large congregation met for a Service of Holy Communion at Monteton, with Liz as our celebrant. It was good to have so many visitors amongst us to share in this day where we remember the Birth of Our Lord. Liz, in her sermon, reminded us of Mary’s thoughts about the birth of her baby, where she ‘pondered these things in her heart’. Monteton Church Needs You! There will be two vacancies on our local church committee next year. Please give this some thought and have some input with the smooth running of our Anglican base in the beautiful Church of Notre Dame at Monteton, This includes help with services and with social and fund-raising activities as part of a very friendly team. New faces are always welcome. If you would like more information, please contact Norma on 05 53 93 53 86, or [email protected] , or talk with any current committee member.

Picnic Play Reading Group. The Picnic Play-Reading Group meets once a month after the service for a picnic and to read a play. Come along on Sunday, January 18th following the service. All those interested should contact Pamela Prior ([email protected], Tel: 05 56 59 67 34 or 06 75 80 03 86). Home Study Groups. If you would like to learn more about the Bible, develop your Christian faith, and get to know people from the church in an informal setting, why not join a study group with people who live in a similar area and wish to meet at the same time - either during the day or in the evening? One suggestion is to start by reading and discussing a book by Bishop Steven Croft: “Jesus’ People - what the church should do next. It is a short but inspiring book with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. More books can be ordered from Church House Bookshop or via Amazon, if needed. If you are interested, please contact Christine Rychlewski: [email protected]. We will then send out a Doodle Poll to find out what times suit as many people as possible. Prayer triplets. One thing all of us can do as Christians is to encourage each other in prayer. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, as in fact you are already doing.” Thessalonians 5:11 At a recent Wine & Words, we discussed our feeling that praying “alone” was sometimes difficult and thought that joining in a “Prayer triplet” could make our prayer lives livelier and richer. The idea is to group together in threes and communicate throughout the week about prayer, by phone, email, or even getting together, focusing on the local and Chaplaincy prayer chain, as well as concerns we feel more comfortable sharing in a triplet than in “public”.

Christmas Bazaar. Under the superb direction of Pamela Prior, another Christmas Bazaar was organized and came to be - with the help of so many and lots of Christmas cheer! Thanks go to everyone - from stand holders to jam makers to wine producers offering their spirits, to leaders of games and activities for the children to our splendid bagpiper, and to people who made promises for the Silent Auction. The warm tea and cakes were, as always, divine. There was really something for everyone. Over 4,000€ was brought in, breaking a record, in aid of the Chaplaincy and the Bordeaux charities. Bramwell’s last Sunday Morning Service, including 2 baptisms, on Sunday, December 7th, followed by ice skating. Emotions have been running high in Bordeaux, with the tremendous blessing of Bramwell and Jennifer Bearcroft and their 4 year ministry amongst us and their retirement as of mid-December to the Lot & Garonne. We are thankful that they aren’t far off and ce n’est qu’un au revoir! Bramwell’s last service as priest-in-charge was a moving one, including the baptisms of two young brothers, Elliot and Antony, who were good as gold. The Choir has been a major development thanks to the enthusiasm and joint efforts of Bramwell and music director Richard Hunt - and the singers, of course. Everyone felt privileged to participate in this special service. Jennifer has been a guiding light in so many areas – we dare not think of how we can fill her shoes. She was especially close to the Sunday School and the Youth Group – and the children just adore her. An outing to the outdoor ice skating rink completed the day, for those (both young and not so young!) who were available.

We hope to set up a private Internet forum, so that the Triplets can communicate with each other, especially about answers to prayer. If you would like to join a triplet, please contact Christine Rychlewski: [email protected], indicating if you already have partners.

The Christmas December 14th

The Foyer Fraternel Gouffrand, a Bordeaux Church charity outreach, is in greater need than ever of anything that can bring some relief to those in difficulty: clothes or shoes in good condition, non-perishable food or financial donations. Please bring your gifts to church on any Sunday morning. For more information, please contact Freda Perris (05 56 36 07 27).

The Bordeaux Church has quite the reputation and the Christmas Carol Service attracts people from far and wide. Over 300 people, including 60+ children, attended the Carol Service – with carols and anthems led by Richard and the Choir, and a multi-national flavour with the 5 lessons read in different languages (English, Malagasy, Ibu (Nigerian), Australian and French). Many thanks to the church mice who decorated the chapel so nicely and to the hours which the Choir put in to sing so brilliantly.

Chap-Aid, the Chaplaincy’s Charity association, working in aid of others. Nellie Salvi, Bordeaux’s Chap-Aid representative, will be happy to provide people with further information on this important part of our city ministry (Tel. 06 11 37 46 78). Donations (small change in the coin jar or cheques to “Chap-Aid”) are always welcome. Thank you for your continued support. Your talent and help are needed. The future of the Bordeaux Church depends on YOU! That’s because Christ’s church is US. At the beginning of this New Year, think seriously about how you can become more involved in the life of your church. Many hands lighten the load … so please take this request to the Lord in prayer. Your church wardens will be happy to discuss any ideas you may have. From the Chaplaincy Soul Survivor Team: Soul Survivor 2015 Calling all youth aged 13-18! Join us at the Soul Survivor Festival (near Bath, England) on 21-25th August 2015 for 5 days of camping, music, sports, worship, inspiring talks and a chance to explore faith. Interested? Sunday,

A highlight of the service was the Nativity Play. Around 40 children participated in a simple but moving tableau narrated by Emma Sharp and Nyere Gibson. The play included a guest appearance of newborn Valentine who starred as the Baby Jesus! Pictured here is the Mother and Child.

News from last month 5 baptisms and an Advent Carol Service! How can things be more wonderful than that? The Bordeaux Church began the Advent Season with a beautiful candlelit church, the harmonies of an ever-growing Choir, and the baptisms of one adult and 4 children: Tara, Gabriel, Zackary, Anna and Tess. Bramwell handled the rather large number beautifully, thanks to assistance from some of our young people. We rejoice in the gift of the Holy Spirit and warmly welcome our new Church family members.

The infamous team of Sharp & Fisher prepared the mulled wine, the odours of which wafted up the long corridor to the Chapel doors, beckoning the crowds to come down and enjoy! This was a grand occasion to thank Jennifer and Bramwell for their good care of us all over the years. The children offered them the best gift ever – a cross comprised of all of their photos (over 70!), designed by Sunday School teacher Anne Sharp.

By the time we had the Négrondes Carol Service on the 19th December a lot of people had gone to the UK to be with their families. I think there were 28 at the service. Stollen, coffee and sparkling wine were served after the service and then about 16 of us went for a lovely meal in the Négrondes restaurant.

Christmas Carols at the Eglise Notre Dame. Thanks to contacts by Choir member, Danièle Hartanérot, the Anglican Choir was able to share its English traditions with the greater Bordeaux community on Sunday, December 21st, in the splendid baroque church, Eglise Notre Dame. People were able to listen to a free concert of carols, some for the Choir alone and many where they could join in. Hopefully this will become an annual Bordeaux city tradition! Thanks to our different Church leaders. We extend our thanks to the Revd Robin Nash who travelled to Bordeaux on Christmas Day to lead a joy-filled Holy Communion Service. And special thanks to Christine Rychlewski who offered to lead both the last service of 2014 and the first service of 2015!

Dear friends, How on earth did I miss the train yesterday morning? So with an hours delay I joined the next train, which stopped in Limoges for just over an hour whilst they found another engine, the ice on the cables had done nasty things I gather. 3 flights later and a group of 15 of us, mostly Scandinavians, some on their second or third tour. We are leaving at dawn to battle through the jungle roads for the port - should be there in about 8 hours. The place reminds me of the backend of Bangkok, just dirtier. A few of us have been for a walk, am starved but just couldn’t bring myself to buy anything. We are in a guest house, behind barbed wire and steel gates set in lush tropical gardens, not too hot. Start work on Monday morning dealing with the queue. The wealthier are paying the poorer people to stand in the queue for hours, so they have started random selections. We start at 8, finish at 6 and I will have a long weekend every 6 weeks. We stopped at a church in the city to listen to a children’s choir rehearsing, an oasis amid all the dirt and traffic. Happy New Year my friends, and another huge thank you for your efforts to support my work here. Grace and blessings Love Anne

On Tuesday 6th of January starting 8pm at St Catherine’s there will be a musical recital given by Quatuor Scarlett. Based in Nice this talented and highly trained string quartet consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. For nearly 15 years, these four professional musicians have performed for high profile clients on the prestigious French Riviera. Their repertoire, though mainly classical, also includes romantic and modern, film scores and even more modern pop classics. This promises to be a highly entertaining evening so why not bring the family along. Entrance is free, and for more information visit the website at [email protected] or visit their sites on Facebook or Linkdin.

Carol Service Our beautifully decorated church was full for St Catherine’s bi-lingual Candlelit Carol Service on 7th December. We sang many of the familiar Christmas carols, our first being Darke’s version of ‘In the bleak Midwinter’, with the first verse sung as a beautiful solo by Anne Taylor. We listened to familiar bible readings telling the story of Christ’s birth and also heard The Ox’s Story, a lovely poem written and read by Veronica Hudson. The choir, looking very smart in their black and red, were in full voice singing three beautiful anthems: the uplifting ‘Immanuel’ by Michael Card, the moving ‘Christmas Sanctus’ by Susan & Lee Dengler and the rousing ‘Angels tell the Christmas Story’ by Malcolm Archer. We had a delightful story from Rev Gill in her address and as if all that wasn’t enough, after our final ‘O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord’ and the blessing, mulled wine and stollen were served to everyone by the hospitality team. Many thanks are due to everyone who helped to make this such a wonderful service – and if you weren’t able to be there but would like to see what you missed, you can! Just click here http://www. churchinaquitaine.org/index.php/limeuil#news Many thanks to Roger Doidge for the video and for his photos. Our first Midnight Mass held on Christmas Eve was a resounding success and was a fitting opening to the festive season. This was followed on Christmas morning by a service of Christmas Praise. Carol Singing This year, a jolly “troupe” of carollers from Sainte Catherine’s made the rounds to a number of local Maisons de Retraites at Belves, Lalinde, St Cyprien/Castels and Le Bugue treating the residents there to a recital of carols in both English and French. This followed last year’s inaugural programme organised by Amy Owensmith and this year had been specially requested by staff at the maisons. An enjoyable and uplifting time was had by all, with many of the residents joining in the singing. It is hoped we can make this a regular feature in future years. We have had 2 excellent Come Dine with Me events in December. Our first one was a Fawlty Towers evening and saw much hilarity as the various characters read their scripts. The second evening was Chez Strachan and was just as enjoyable with excellent food being enjoyed at each venue. Both events were to raise funds to support Anne Penfold’s 3 month venture with Mercy Ships as a dental hygienist. Anne left on Boxing Day to fly to Madagascar and this is her first email to us from there: Chaplaincy of Aquitaine

May we wish everyone a very Happy New Year VVVVVVV May the celebration of Christ’s birth bring you gifts of peace, joy and contentment this Christmas Season, and throughout the New Year, together with blessings of good health, love and thankfulness. When the song of the angels is silent When the star in the sky is gone When kings and princes are home When shepherds are again tending their sheep When the manger is darkened and still The work of Christmas begins….. …to seek the lost …to comfort the brokenhearted …to feed the hungry …to rebuild the nations …to bring peace and reconciliation among people …to befriend the lonely …to set the prisoner free …to make music in the heart.
