Hunter found The body of missing Ohaupo pig hunter Kevin Hayward was found on Monday. The police dive squad found Mr Hayward on the bed of Lake Waipapa about 2km upstream from the Waipapa Dam. Police say the death is not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.

Food for thought Guest speaker at Te Awamutu Continuing Education Group on Wednesday, July 18 is Tim Altham of The PickMee Fruit Company. The business is the result of the highly successful amalgamation of two companies, Sunfruit Orchards and Fruitdale Orchards, combining the skills of the families involved. Fruit, mainly apples and pears, is now shipped to many countries including Germany, UK, USA and different parts of Asia. The company is a direct supplier to Countdown in NZ, and other major supermarkets around the world. Mr Altham, now involved in expansion, sales and distribution, has a sound knowledge of the industry. See advertisement in today’s Courier or ring 871 6434 for more details.

Country show Te Awamutu Country Music Club’s monthly concert this Sunday will feature some of its award winning performers from the recent Te Puke Country Music Club awards. The afternoon of entertainment takes place at the Te Awamutu RSA on Sunday from 1pm until 4.30pm. In a correction to the story about the awards published Tuesday, it was Vicki Smith who competed in the veterans section. Passionate about flying BY DEAN TAYLOR As Sue and Richard McCandlish come to grips with the death of their son Alan they remember a man who had two loves — family and flying. Alan McCandlish (31) died on Saturday while BASE jumping with friends near Berner Oberland in Switzerland. He had jumped from a cliff in his winged suit, but something went wrong and he hit the wall and fell to his death. Alan and friends were about three weeks into a twomonth European trip. He has been described as a hero and inspiration to others, but his Mum says Alan was humble about his achievements and didn’t like to boast. She says while the sport he loved was dangerous, Alan was very focussed and prepared. His best mate Benny (Benjamin MacPherson), who broke the news of Alan’s death to his parents, summed it up in an email to Alan’s parents back home in Te Awamutu. ‘Alan achieved more in his 30 years than most people do in 10 lifetimes.’ ‘He was very focussed, an extreme talent and a calculated risk taker.’ ‘He’s my best friend — I will miss him.’ Alan worked as a skydiving instructor with about 4000 jumps to his name, as well as over 700 BASE jumps. In 2008 he and two friends pioneered jumping from the Kaipo Wall in Fiordland — the first to achieve it from the biggest vertical cliff in New Zealand. Dad Richard says Alan was always sporty, and a natural talent. But his Mum says he was also a great listener, and while he had a bit of a wicked sense of humour, only spoke when he had something important to say. Recently that was to wish his Mum happy birthday — Skyped from overseas. ‘‘He loved his family — his two ‘little’ brothers, sister-in-law and niece and always came home for family events or made sure he got in touch,’’ says Mr McCandlish. Right now the family is concentrating on getting Alan home, accompanied by Benny and his other travelling mate Teroy Attwood, and planning a fitting send-off for a young man who lived life to the full.

Womenz Outlet Shop closing in Te Awamutu. Retailers are bound to their lease agreements and we all have our suppliers to pay and just having to try and meet our obligations can be a daily challenge. I would like to ask local shoppers to please at least look at what we have to offer before you go racing off to Hamilton, The Base or wherever. You may be surprised to find our prices and selection can compete very well with other out of town shops. We are relying on your loyalty to keep us all going through difficult economic times. Use us or lose us. JEAN WARBURTON Te Awamutu Womenz Ltd

It has been an interesting exercise going through the process of starting to close down a part of my business last week. Everyone is aware of how difficult retailing is in New Zealand at the moment. People we have never seen before, as well as our regular customers, have been rushing in and our phone has been red hot with pleas for us to keep trading, what a loss it would be if we were no longer operating . . . and so on. Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to all our great regular customers — without your loyalty we wouldn’t still be here. Then to all the local people, I would like to say unless you support our local retailers there will be more than the

I am writing to you to express my delight at the talent our local young people have. I had the honour of going to Out In The Styx for the Eastern Zone Speeches last month. It was wonderful to hear the imagination and creativity of the students from Pukeatua, Wharepapa South, Waipa Christian School, Puahue and Arohena. With speeches on such

things like ‘Older Generation’ and ‘Why kids should not go to school’ to ‘Rugby’, ‘Vomit’ and ‘Dennis the Menace’. Congratulations to Pukeatua for winning the Junior Section for ‘Dennis the Menace’ and Waipa Christian School for winning the Senior Section for ‘Vomit’. Also a big thanks to Out In The Styx for hosting and putting on a wonderful supper for everyone. SHARLENE FROST

The concept of using a trust to fundraise for and manage the two pool complexes is a great idea because currently they are both expensive to run and under utilised. Unfortunately, the Waipa District Council’s Trust Establishment Document is full of open ended and contradictory rhetoric which the council could use steer the trust in any direction it likes, appoint whoever it likes, to achieve whatever result it wants with no consultation. In the end, the poor ratepayer gets to pick up the $20 million tab, for example, a 50m version of Option 6! We know we can upgrade our 50m pool and build a 25m heated indoor pool for less than $7 million if we can stop the mindless spending spree the

council is hell bent on perpetuating. The only way to influence or moderate this juggernaut is by having input in the wording of the trust document in the form of a submission to the council. It is vital that everybody with an interest in our rates increases gets out and does this because the close off date for submissions is July 20. Remember the whole trust process has only been in the public arena for less than a month — ask yourself, why the hurry on such an important issue? A copy of the document and submission forms are available from the Council Offices and online. JIM CARLYLE Cambridge — member of the Save our 50m Pool Group

Windfall for schools Te Awamutu primary and intermediate schools are set to receive a windfall of art and sports equipment from Meadow Fresh. The Cool Stuff for Kids initiative will see half a million dollars worth of equipment, including Gilbert netballs and rugby balls, Staedtler paints and felt tips, giant skipping ropes, glitter and craft paper, distributed to schools throughout the country. To enter the giveaway schools need to simply sign up at www.meadowfresh.co.nz and send in stickers collected

from specially marked Meadow Fresh milk and yoghurt pack. ‘‘We are proud to support NZ schools with this initiative and have lined up an exciting prize pool of quality equipment,’’ says Caroline Jones, Meadow Fresh Marketing Manager. Schools can register their preference for art gear, sports gear or a mixture of both during the registration process. They then get everyone collecting to earn their share of the total prize pool. Registration is now open.

Rushlee gets the call BY COLIN THORSEN Rushlee Buchanan has joined her Te Awamutu Sports Cycling club-mate Jaime Neilsen and Kihikihi equestrian Andrew Nicholson in the New Zealand Olympic team finalised on Monday. Buchanan was always going to London for her first Olympics — it was just a matter of hanging on to the edge of her seat for a while due to the red tape process. She was ‘selected’ in April but had to wait for the final quota spots to be finalised. The full New Zealand cycling team, sprinters and endurance, are currently in Bordeaux, France going through their final Olympic preparations before entering the Games village. In a phone call to her parents, Don and Viv in Te Awamutu, Buchanan said all the riders are training well and chaffing at the bit to get to London. The two Te Awamutu Sports’ riders are members of the four strong women’s pursuit team. Only three get to ride each race but Don Buchanan says each and everyone of them are likely to ride at the Olympics should they make the final because of the short time frame between each ride. The qualifying round is scheduled for the afternoon session on August 3 (between 3am and 6am NZ time), followed by the semifinal and final (two hours apart) on August 4. Don Buchanan will get to see his daughter compete in London. He flies out today, taking in the last seven days of the Tour de France, enroute to the Olympics. He has tickets to all the cycling sessions, as well as the 1500m final.

Te Awamutu Intermediate received 11 Windows PC computers from the University of Waikato. The scheme began in the Faculty of Education and is now university-wide policy. Te Awamutu Intermediate technology teacher David Monk says receiving the computers has been a great help for the school. ‘‘We have been very fortunate over the years to have received three lots of computers from the university which we have been able to deploy into the classrooms for the student to use,’’ says Monk. ‘‘The computers are used for Mathletics all the time and for online testing.’’

‘‘With the advent of cloud computing the need for students to have access to computers or similar devices has become more vital to their learning and so with the help of the University of Waikato we are able to get closer to our goal of more computers for our students to use in the classrooms.’’ Waikato University upgrades its 4500 computers on a rolling basis about every four years. ■ Schools and early childhood centres can approach the university with requests for computer equipment by visiting www.waikato.ac.nz/about/ community/donations.shtml

Te Awamutu Intermediate is the latest organisation to benefit from computer upgrades at the University of Waikato. The university’s Computer Donations Programme sees retired university computers in good condition donated to schools and early childhood centres in the greater Waikato region. ‘‘The donations programme is an opportunity for the university to engage directly with schools,’’ says Steve Leichtweis, IT Manager for the Faculty of Education. ‘‘The cost of IT equipment is quite high, and this programme is a way for the University of Waikato to support schools we know will benefit from the technology.’’

New role at TAB James Cunneen has been recently appointed as the new branch manager for TAB Te Awamutu, adding this role to his continuing appointments as the TAB agent for Frankton and Cambridge. Mr Cunneen has been with the TAB since 1997, and began working in and managing TAB stores in West Auckland and the North Shore. In 2001 he began his Waikato association, with two-and-a-half years as the TAB agent at Matamata, and has gone on to head up the Racing Board’s stores in Te Rapa, Frankton, and Cambridge. Mr Cunneen brings an enthusiastic interest in the TAB’s racing and sports products to his role. He has raced many horses, dabbled in breeding from a couple of mares and has had a long-term involvement in racing and sports sponsorship activities. His team is proud of the ‘state of the art’ TAB provided for Te Awamutu customers at the Pak’nSave complex and invites locals to come and have a look if they haven’t already.

Lake gets all clear NZ awards launched Lake Ngaroto has had a health warning on it lifted, one of two more lakes in the Waikato to be given clearance by the Waikato District Health Board recently. The other lake cleared was Lake Whangape, north of Huntly. The lakes were among a number in the Waikato affected by toxic cyanobacterial blooms. Other lakes that have been affected are Lake Rotoroa in Hamilton, Hakanoa and Waahi near Huntly, and also Lake Kainui. Test results on the lakes should be used only as a general guide, says the Waikato Medical Officer of Health, Dr Dell Hood. ‘‘Cyanobacteria and their

toxins will not be evenly spread through any lake and may be concentrated in some areas by wind and water movements,’’ she says. ‘‘Cyanobacterial blooms can happen very quickly when conditions for growth are favourable. While this is more common in summer, blooms established during summer and autumn can persist into winter months. ‘‘During blooms lakes should not be used for any activity which involves skin contact with the water.’’ She says scum on the water of any lake is likely to contain high levels of toxin. If it is contacted, skin should be washed and clothing changed as soon as possible.

Up to 250 Local Heroes will next year become recipients of medals which will be awarded over 15 regional public events. Nominations are open until October 12. Five categories of awards are available, and finalists in each category will be announced at the end of February next year. The categories are: Kiwibank

Te Awamutu Brass continued their fine form when they placed second overall in last week’s 2012 BBANZ C Grade Contest. However, their trip to the event in Timaru didn’t start so well — fog delays meant a scramble to get there in time to prepare for the competition which began on Friday. Players were tired, but rallied for a practice after the last group arrived at 9.30pm on Thursday night. In all there were 29 bands

competing through the four grades (A-D). The Te Awamutu band was up against five other bands from around the country in the C Grade. The weather played into the organisers’ hands and was fine for the street march which saw Te Awamutu Brass (led by Drum Major, Allan Patterson) placed second after its rendition of Invercargill by Alex Lithgow. CRAFTY: Jenny Magee with several of her book repurposing art-works, created from old books she bought at the recent Rotary Book Fair. a few hours to some days to complete. ‘‘Some people may think I’m just cannibalising the books, but I don’t believe turning them into beautiful art forms is disrespectful to the books in any way,’’ says Ms Magee. ‘‘Often the words help highlight the art. ‘‘Sometimes old books are put up for sale at several book fairs and then finally end up in a dumpster because no-one wants them. That’s a shame — there are so many others things they can be used for.’’ Ms Magee recently obtained several books, via Amazon Books, on book repurposing art, and they show illustrations of storage boxes, vases, lampstands, book cases and a raft of other practical items created from old books.

The book-art hobby is a useful relaxation from her otherwise busy schedule of travel all over New Zealand as a professional coach and trainer in people diversity, working mainly with companies which have a number of different ethnic employees. ‘‘I enjoy helping people and organisations face and work through the challenges presented by different cultural perspectives,’’ she says. ‘‘New Zealand’s cultural diversity is increasing, and I like helping others build better understandings and relationships.’’ Ms Magee is also an author, having recently edited the fifth edition of New to New Zealand, a book detailing the customs and lifestyles of more than 40 ethnic groups now living in New Zealand.

Probably Te Awamutu Rotary annual book fair organisers never dreamed that a boxfull of their old and largely unwanted books would ever end up being turned into beautifully-crafted works of art. But that’s just what Jenny Magee has been carefully creating from books that may otherwise have been destined for the scrap-heap. ‘‘It’s called ‘book-repurposing’,’’ says Ms Magee with a grin. ‘‘I learned about it from an idea I got off the internet — I saw this image of a book that had all its pages folded and trimmed into the word ‘Read’, and I was fascinated by the concept of folding and cutting pages in various different ways to create really lovely pieces of art.’’ After further research she discovered there is a whole craft of book repurposing, and that it is catching on internationally. So far she hasn’t found anyone in New Zealand involved in the art-form, but she’s not deterred by that in the slightest. ‘‘I’ve always loved books, and this seems the perfect way to use old books and turn them into something beautiful, rather than just throw them out,’’ she says. ‘‘I’ve been involved in quilting for a long time, and I enjoy the mathematics and detail involved with that. This type of book art is similar.’’ She says there is no end to the types of art forms which can be created using the old books, either utilising the whole book as one art-piece or taking portions or even just single pages or the covers to make designs for static displays or arty but useful household items. Some of the work involves folding pages in on themselves in various ways, others are trimmed or cut or even glued into solid sections. Individual pages, previously printed with such detail as music, are folded into origami shapes. She has created delicate flowers, with petals covered in musical notes, using the pages of a sheet-music book. The work is often painstakingly detailed and intricate, and can take from

Breakfast time Parents were encouraged to ensure their children eat quality cereal foods for breakfast when the Kellogg’s Breakfast roadshow set up at Te Awamutu Pak ‘N’ Save on Tuesday. The visit is part of a nation-wide campaign by the cereal-making company to encourage parents to give their children a healthy breakfast each day. The road-show was in Te Awamutu for three hours and children were given free bowls of cereal and milk to enjoy. Recent Australian research has shown that children who eat cereal with milk for breakfast are better students than those who eat nothing or have lighter food and drink options such as tea, coffee, soft-drink, biscuits, cake or toast. The Kellogg’s Breakfast Bus and road-show will be visiting supermarkets around the country

throughout July, and making donations of free cereal to schools and local communities, to encourage parents to give their children regular healthy breakfasts. Kellogg’s director of nutrition and scientific affairs for Asia-Pacific, Julie Howden, says the Kellogg’s Breakfast campaign addresses the issue of a worrying number of children not eating breakfast. Statistics showed that an estimated 200,000 New Zealand children went to school without breakfast at least once a week, and 36,000 never eat breakfast at home on a school day. TC120712DT01

IN BUSINESS

Facing new challenge From years of running her own hairdressing salon to now being the new owner of Liquorland Te Awamutu is a rather major change, but for Rachel Donaghy it’s a good one. She took over the business in February, and says she is enjoying the challenge of a new and different way of life. Mrs Donaghy, who has lived all her life in Te Awamutu, ran the hairdressing salon Eclipse in town for some years before spending the last five years working as a hairdresser from her home. ‘‘Coming into the Liquorland business has been a good move,’’ she says. ‘‘I’m enjoying the different kind of work, and its good to meet nice people too.’’ She says the store has a substantial wine selection, including a range of international wines and quality New Zealand products. It also offers a comprehensive range of beers, spirits, mixers and ready-to-drink beverages, along with a wide variety of party and catering food and drinks. Mrs Donaghy runs a wine club in the store every month, where wine sales representatives and wine makers show off their products and members of the club are invited to try before they buy. Club members meet at 7.30pm every second Tuesday of the month, and Mrs Donaghy says that while new members are welcome she asks that they come into the store beforehand to let her know they will be attending, so that numbers can be adequately catered to.

She says the business also offers an out-catering service for weddings, 21st birthday celebrations, all kinds of social gatherings and commercial events. The store regularly changes its

Himalayan house building expedition after volunteers Peter Robertson is heading off to Nepal for three weeks, and he’s looking for volunteers to go with him. He’s team leader of a 15-strong group of Habitat for Humanity workers who will build houses in the Himalayan mountains for a week, then spend the next two weeks on a trek through the Anapurna region. ‘‘Ten teams of 15 New Zealanders are going on the trip in October, and we aim to build at least 40 homes while we’re there,’’ says Mr Robertson. This will be the third such trip the 69-year-old semi-retired Te Awamutu accountant has made. His first was to Nepal in 2010 when the 150-strong team built 50 homes. Last November he led a team to Cambodia where 20 houses were built. He needs three more volunteers to make up his team of 15, and the whole group is looking for about 60 more team members. This year Mr Robertson’s wife

Coral is going with him. ‘‘We will be building ‘Everest Build’ houses out of locally-made clay and cement blocks. Each house has two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and an exterior toilet,’’ he says. All the work is voluntary, and participants pay their own way. ‘‘We build for a week, and it’s really full-on,’’ he says. ‘‘The houses are built out of permanent materials, which mean the local people are not endlessly having to make repairs to their homes, and although they may seem rather basic by New Zealand standards, to the local people they are absolute mansions. ‘‘Everything is highly organised, and even though we may sometimes be working with people who can’t speak English and we can’t understand their language, it isn’t a problem.’’ Mr Robertson says the work is a great experience. ‘‘Everyone in the teams is there for the same reason — they all

want to help others and to enjoy being in another country,’’ he says. ‘‘Working with the local people and making a difference in their lives is really wonderful. It’s quite different from being a tourist in the country.’’ The new houses are occupied by families who are required to help in the construction, and who rent the property for three years. If they maintain their rent payments, that money is then used as a down-payment on the purchase of the home. The teams leave Auckland on October 5 and will be back at the end of the month. He says Habitat for Humanity teams are also going to Bangladesh, India, Ethiopia and Bali. ■ Anyone wanting to discuss going to Nepal with Mr Robertson as a member of his team, can contact him on 021 978-343, or by email at [email protected]

ONE of the many inspiring horticultural exhibits at Floriade 2012 in Holland. dose in early September. This should give you a beautiful display of colourful hydrangeas. The Dutch are the masters when it comes to floral displays, the effort they put into each and every display over the whole 22ha site was truly unbelievable. I am really impressed how landscapers over in europe have access to plants and trees for their sites, that are up to 50 years old — if you have the money in Europe, you can basically have whatever aged garden you like. Some countries were invited by Floriade to create a horticultural display representing their country. We saw exhibits from Japan, Israel, Thailand, Mexico, Korea, Philippines, plus many more — they were all very interesting in their own right, with obviously quite different plant material being used in each. Around the grounds, there were many sculptures and interactive displays — I was fascinated with a dragon that had real flames coming in bursts out of its mouth, and you constantly encountered music and theatre from all over the world. Like I said this was a world class show, that

certainly had something for everyone. If you are a very keen gardener or really enjoy just visiting inspiring gardens, then you should certainly pencil in your diary, to make sure you get to the next Floriade, in 2022. WHAT TO DO IN YOUR GARDEN IN JULY ■ Prune your roses and then spray the bare stems with copper oxychloride to clean off any over wintering fungous diseases on the stems. This will help your roses to stay clean and healthier for longer in the spring. ■ Spray any weeds that are hanging around, so that you go into spring with a clean soil area, and then put a layer of good garden mulch or compost on the soil. ■ Put down some slug bait now around your hosta and any other perennials, so that you eradicate these nasties, before they can get stuck into new emerging spring growth in early spring ■ Watch your liriopes — these can be a great home for slugs and snails. I recommend to cut all the foliage off your liriopes in July (cut them down to within a few centi-

metres of the ground) and they will quickly start to come away with a fully fresh cloak of new foliage. ■ Citrus — watch your plants for scale insects latching onto the stems. Spray with confidor (insecticide) and then follow up a few weeks later with conqueror spraying oil at winter strength rate. Get on top of these pests now, and you should have minimal problems later in the spring/ summer season. ■ Planting trees — a great month to get any trees planted, whether its on the farm, lifestyle block, or even on the tiny urban section. At this time of year, the roots will get growing well before the top comes into new growth, and this larger root system will help the tree to cope with a drier summer if we have one next season. Spring is not very far away now, the days are slowly getting a little longer, so if you have any opportunity of doing a little maintenance in the garden over July, between the rain and frosts then this will definitely cut down your general garden workload later on, when everything comes alive. Happy Gardening. 8781899AA

y wife Val and I were very fortunate to recently have the opportunity to visit the 2012 World Horticultural Expo in Holland. This show was called Floriade, put on by the Dutch every 10 years, and it was certainly one of the horticultural highlights of my 35 years in the nursery industry. The show covered 22ha, and there was certainly something for everyone’s tastes and interests in gardening and landscaping. The show covered such a big area, that they had a large cable car that could take you from one end of the show to the other in a very short space of time. Apparently the show needed six million visitors to break even, that gives you some sort of perspective as to the money outlaid by the Dutch in getting this show up and running. Floriade was open from April 5 through to June 20, that’s nearly three months — quite a feat to keep all the displays and plants in pristine condition for such a long period. The photo attached to this article, is one of many hundreds we took over the two days we spent at the show. I would really have loved to show you dozens of amazing photos of horticultural and floral displays and outstanding landscaped sites, really pushing the imagination for all tastes. The photo I have chosen shows huge handwoven baskets made of willow stems, full of hydrangeas at their peak, brimming with flower. Just out of the photo was chandeliers with orchids in full flower hanging delicately upside down. Note the clear flower colours of the hydrangeas in the photo. If you want yours to look as good as these next summer then feed your blue hydrangeas now while they are dormant with a dose of aluminium sulphate, and if you want your red/pink hydrangeas to show very clear colours next summer feed them now with lime. I would recommend whether you are feeding the blues or the pinks give them another

Te Awamutu’s brave bid falls short BY COLIN THORSEN Te Awamutu showed commendable character, skill and determination to finish runnersup at the week-long Gwynne Shield U55kg rugby tournament in Cambridge. Having made the final the hard way after losing their opening game, Te Awamutu threw everything except the kitchen sink at the champion Hamilton Wasps’ outfit on Sunday. The underdogs stole lineout ball off the opposition throw, won a couple of tightheads against the scrum feed, and made many telling first-half breaks to have Hamilton clearly rattled for the first time all week — a side that had thrashed them 42-14 on opening day. Such was Te Awamutu’s dominance for all but five minutes of the first half, one of the biggest upsets in Gwynne Shield rugby history did not look impossible. The fact that the dream never eventuated can be attributed to the Wasps’ outstanding cover defence and enviable size and strength off the bench. Several times during the first half, when Te Awamutu strung phase after phase together, their cover defence snuffed out potential try-scoring moves after their first line had been breached. Both teams scored a converted try to be on level terms at 7-all at halftime. It took the unbeaten defending champions 40 minutes to get on top.(Games are of 30 minutes each way duration.) Te Awamutu hit the lead three minutes into the second half after Jock Yarndley broke away from a forward drive to run 20 metres to score.

TC120712CT01

TRYTIME: Fullback Kaea Hongara caps an outstanding Gwynne Shield tournament scoring the first of Te Awamutu’s two tries in the final against Hamilton Wasps. Logan Karl converted for a 14-7 scoreline. The Wasps wasted no time replying in kind with a converted try. At 14-all it was still very much anyone’s final. Enter the Wasps’ replacements off the bench. A couple of them appeared giants,

compared to Te Awamutu’s diminutive bench, and they made an instant impact against a tiring opposition — paving the way for three tries in 10 minutes to blow the score out to a flattering 19-point winning margin, 33-14. Te Awamutu’s two tries scored by Kaea Hongara and Yarndley were both converted by

first five Logan Karl. The goal kicking was of a high standard, with Wasps’ first five landing four from five conversions. The Ross Fleming, Greg Edge, Grant Edwards coached/David Reynolds managed Te Awamutu team improved as the week progressed, beating Hamilton Eagles

40-10, Matamata 24-0, South Waikato Tritons 48-0 and fourth placed Hamilton Tigers 72-3 to top their pool. They then accounted for third placed Cambridge 24-5 in the semi-final, with tries to Tairoa Crean (2) and Kaea Hongara, all converted by Karl, who also kicked a penalty. As runners-up, Te Awamutu received the Brian Spraggon Memorial Trophy and the Rowan/Baird Cup for highest placed country team. Further success went the maroon and golds way with their captain Tairoa Crean being named Country Player of the Tournament. Ten Te Awamutu boys have been named in the Country team to play City in what is effectively a trial for the Waikato Roller Mills Team. They are Zavier Letford, Jake Russ, Cameron Reynolds, Griffin Bayley, Ifor Jones, Ben Harnett, Logan Karl, Tairoa Crean, Kaea Hongara and Troy Van Dorsten. ‘‘Te Awamutu did themselves proud finishing runners-up for the second year running after winning the Shield in 2010,’’ says Reynolds. The team management would like to thank everyone, who endured all weather conditions, to support and encourage the boys throughout the week. ‘‘It was very much appreciated and contributed to the fantastic experience our squad has had,’’ commented co-coach, Fleming. ‘‘A big thank you also to Sincerity Drycleaners for their sponsorship, ensuring the boys looked good on the field.’’ More than 200 Year 7 and 8 students contested the annual tournament.

The Chiefs remain top of the Investec Super XV Rugby table despite going down to the Crusaders 28-21 in Hamilton on Friday night. In front of a capacity crowd, the Chiefs battled hard against the former champions. The crowd was almost deafening as they cheered the home side on while attacking in the last 10 minutes to try and secure a draw. “I just want to thank everyone who turned out. It was great to run out into a full stadium,” centre, Andrew Horrell told the Courier. “We are all disappointed in the result and know that our set piece let us down, which had a flow on effect. “However, we showed our fighting spirit right to the end and are confident that we haven’t played our best rugby yet.” Horrell says it is pleasing to be guaranteed a home semi-final - “but we still have to do the job this weekend against the Hurricanes.” Match highlights included Aaron

Cruden passing the milestone of reaching 200 points in the season and top try scoring prop Sona Taumalolo making a massive solo run, spurred on by the roaring crowd. The Chiefs play the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium tomorrow at 7.35pm. Fans who want to secure tickets to the home semi-final the following weekend are advised to purchase them as soon as they go on sale on Tuesday, July 24 to avoid disappointment. The home semi-final will be held on either July 27 or 28. Magic win nail-biter Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic are one ‘‘very happy camp’’ according to captain Laura Langman after their nail-biting 49-48 win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds . ‘‘It was brilliant to come away with the win, our 10th on the trot, at home in Hamilton,’’ Langman told the Courier. ‘‘I think the game showed how badly both teams wanted to be in the preliminary final against the Northern Mystics. ‘‘At halftime and at threequarter time we acknowledged we had to continue doing what worked well for us. We had to contest and create intercepts on

defence and play clinical on attack. ‘‘There was great defensive pressure accumulated in that last quarter and it was great to see the ball get turned over and converted by us. This game was extremely character building for us as a team unit.’’ The Magic now head to Auckland to play the Mystics, 7.40pm, at Trust Stadium Arena on Monday — a game to decide which team travels to the grand final to face the Melbourne Vixens at Hisense Arena on Sunday, July 22 (4.20pm NZ time). ‘‘We are stoked to be only two games away from grand final glory for the first time but are well aware of the step up that is

required to get to where we want to go.’’ Langman says the Mystics present a huge challenge for their team. ‘‘They have strength throughout the court and are in great form. ‘‘Any side with Bubbs (centre, Temapara George) in their side, always pose a threat. She is one of the game’s greats and certainly the master and commander in the Mystics side.’’ Langman says George has had yet another outstanding ANZ Championship. ‘‘I know she will be on song for this up and coming game. I have a very big task ahead of me.’’

Marist secure top seeding Te Awamutu Marist’s 38-7 win over Matangi-Hillcrest clinched top seeding for the play offs in Waikato second division rugby with a game in hand. Murray Gane Plumbing/Henrys sponsored Marist have now achieved one of their main aims for the season — achieving first division status for 2013. Marist outscored the opposition six tries to one on Saturday. A penetrating run by winger Tahi Edwards led to the opening try after three minutes. Matangi infringed, a quick tap was taken and prop Stephan Barnard crashed over. Midway through the first spell, halfback Bryce McCandlish made a telling blindside break before offloading to Katane Hepi to finish. Soon after, first five Scott Sands showed good speed on a run of 50 metres to score in the corner. Marty Rogers completed the first half scoring, crashing over in a couple of tacklers for a 26-0 scoreline.

Henderson says the second half never hit any heights, with Matangi intent on slowing the game down. The opposition scored their only points of the game with a converted try after 16 minutes. Captain Mark Kahura scored Marist’ fifth try after a tap penalty saw prop Dave Ngatae come within centimetres of scoring. Prolific points scorer, Ben Gisler scored his seventh try of the season — running a good angle to score after receiving the ball from a lineout drive. The Burger King player of the day went to the whole Marist side for their discipline in a game that looked like it could boil over at any stage. The Redoubt Bar and Eatery tackler of the day went to McCandlish for some huge hits against a hard running side. Marist are away this weekend to Raglan, while the B team are at home to Hautapu.

Team’s top four hopes hit Te Awamutu’s Federation 2 soccer team’s top four hopes took a nosedive losing 2-1 away to Katikati. The visitors had the worst possible start to the match, conceding two early goals to trail 2-0 at halftime. The second half was a much different affair with Te Awamutu pressuring their hosts immediately from the re-start. They were quickly rewarded with a Lale Stapleford goal. But try as they might, Te Awamutu couldn’t find another way through the Katikati defence. Coach, Billy Carter reports that his side struggled to cope, initially, with a fired-up home team. ‘‘Had it not been for the heroics of player of the day, keeper Kevin Buckle who saved a penalty shot, things could have been much worse.’’

The crowd attendance at last Saturday’s Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cup day was the highest of the past decade with significant increases in betting. Club general manager, Blair Thomson was delighted with the day’s results. ‘‘We had a fabulous day. The glorious weather conditions obviously helped produce the results,’’ he says. The on-course betting totalled $86,186 compared with $50,984 last year, while the off-course betting amassed $1,386,189 compared with $1,238,320 last year. ‘‘We were fortunate to have excellent fields on the day which stimulated betting,’’ says Thomson. Rejuvenated Te Awamututrained galloper Ourforeingminister will now face his first middle-distance test after an impressive win in the $25,000 Freight Lines Te Awamutu Cup. ‘‘He’s never been past 1600m but I want to give him the chance in the Taumarunui Cup (2000m) at Te Rapa in three weeks time,’’ says inform trainer Richard Otto. ‘‘He deserves to have a go over more ground. He’s got an excellent record on the Te Rapa course where he has already won two races.’’ After finishing second behind Hurricane Mickey in last year’s Te Awamutu Cup, Ourforeignminister was strongly fancied to go one better in last Saturday’s 1580m event. Otto was relieved when the fiveyear-old gelding returned to winning form at Tauranga last month. ‘‘We knew that day at Tauranga that he was right again and he has trained on well since. When he’s right he’s a very good horse which he showed last winter when he won the Merial Mile and Inter-
