Ability to Use Order of Operations Understanding the Rule of Order of Operations Creating Expressions with Order of Operations Using Symbols to Show Order of Operations

III. Materials • 3 bags of 1-6 number cubes for groups of four faculty • Game Board from Teacher’s Resource Workbook pg 123 Great Source Educational Group – Math on Call • Bingo Cards and Bingo Chips • Order of Operations Model Handout(student copy and example) IV. Management Things to prepare ahead of time • Check with building administration to check staff development calendar to set date and time. • Create an Expression to Make a “Whole” • Bingo Cards (Hard Stock) http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=L730 • Order of Operations Model Handout(student copy and example)

Participant Grouping • Teachers will break up in groups of four • Each group will need a game board and 3 dies • Each group will get bingo cards and bingo chips • Each teacher will need Order of Operations Model handouts V.

Procedure – Activities can be done in any order. a. Introduction The instructor will lead the staff in an oral review in the properties. The following are some questions to lead the discussion: • What does PEMDAS mean? • Does order matter? b. Content Activities

Activity 1 Look Out Below! Math on Call - Teacher’s Resource Workbook pg 59 Great Source Educational Group – Math on Call This activity allows the teachers to put real events in order. This demonstrates the importance of order in mathematics. This activity could be modified by letting the groups create their own sequence of events and then let the other groups try to put in order. Each Group will present their results to the class.

Activity 2 Create an Expression to Make a “Whole” Math on Call - Teacher’s Resource Workbook pg 59 Great Source Educational Group – Math on Call This activity allows the teachers to play a game to create an expression that can be simplified to a “whole number”. This activity could be modified by using 2 different color dice to create an expression that can be simplified to an “integer”. If a whole number is produced, then teacher will move that many spaces. If not, movement is forfeited. Activity 3 Order of Operation Model The teacher will practice step-by-step the order of operations and see the letters that are formed. Then, the teacher will check their results using a calculator. Activity 4 Order of Operations Bingo http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=L730 This activity allows the teachers to play bingo to practice order of operations. The teachers will be given blank bingo cards. The problems will be displayed up on the sympodium. Closure Complete the Exit Evaluation Form
