Welcome address The conference is addressed to psychologists, psychiatrists, and pastoral psychologists working for and in Major and Minor Seminaries of Dioceses and formation houses of Religious Orders and Congregations as well as to spiritual directors and rectors of Seminaries in Europe. With the support of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Italian Episcopal Conference, this will be the occasion to focus on the importance of human formation in initial and ongoing formation and to learn about different scientific and practical approaches in screening/assessment, accompaniment and interventions in seminaries and formation houses for Religious.

Your Excellencies, A diligent and coherent life in the priesthood is the best testimony for the Gospel, and at the same time an invitation to young people to choose this same vocation, so following the Lord Jesus. Unfortunately we must observe the sad and grave phenomena of sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy towards minors, which creates an obstacle regarding the clarity of such a testimony. The ecclesiastical community therefore solicits renewed diligence since it is called to face the matter with a spirit of justice, following the teaching of the Highest Pontifical Authorities and thus conforming to the guide lines decided upon by the various bishops’ conferences in accord with the indications given by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The ecclesiastical community who deals with an abuse must always be ready to listen to the victim and his or her family, ensuring every care in treating the case with justice and pledging themselves by offering spiritual and psychological support, whilst respecting the freedom of the victim.

Special care must be taken in discerning the vocation of candidates for ordination to the ministry and consecrated persons during their preparation as deacons or presbyters. To this end the Archdiocese, with the support of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Italian Episcopal Conference jointly with the Pontifical Gregorian University and Central Italy's Faculty of Theology, from the 31st March until 1st April 2017 will host for the first time a European Conference, the theme being "Formation and Prevention. Comparing approaches on human formation and psychological assessment in Seminaries: another step towards safeguarding in Europe ". This aims at being an occasion for focalizing attention on the importance of human formation during the courses of the initial and permanent preparation of the clergy and learning the different scientific approaches and practices for an assessment/screening, close attention and intervention inside the seminaries of the diocese and those institutions responsable for the formation of religious orders. The conference is directed towards psychologists and psychiatrists and pastoral psychologists who work for major and minor diocesan seminaries and establishments for the formation of religious and congregational orders, as well as spiritual directors and rectors of seminaries in Europe. Prof. P. Hans Zollner, director of the Institute of Psychology and vice-rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University and also an important member of the Pontifical Commission for the protection of Minors, and Prof. Stefano Lassi, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, in charge of the psychological assessment for the major Archiepiscopal Seminary in Florence, will sustain those who participate at the conference through a course of deeper scrutiny of the matter, and a sharing of points of views and knowledge. Relaters from all parts of Europe will be present, as specified in the detailed programme which may be obtained at this e-mail address: [email protected]. Bearing in mind Pope Francis's exhortation, in Florence at the 5th National Ecclesiastical Convention, when he encouraged the city to renew its very own traditions by discovering in Jesus Christ a real new humanism, I invite you to participate and so contribute to this conference with your learning, in a Florence, as always, ready to welcome you from all over Europe. Kindest Regards, Giuseppe Card. Betori, Archbishop of Florence

Explore Florence Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Uffizi, the Bargello, and the Accademia. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are actually art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural genius. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio, and experience the "newest" area of Florence, the Oltrarno. The vast and varied art collection housed in the Pitti Palace is also not to be missed. In the surrounding areas of Florence, you can visit the Boboli Gardens or climb the hill to the church of San Miniato al Monte to experience an enchanting view of the city. Also, the Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful country sides in Italy and a famous wine production area.
