PARTICIPANT GUIDE A GUIDE TO HELP YOU REGISTER FOR A WALK FOR APRAXIA EVENT & THE TOOLS AVAILABLE TO YOU AS A REGISTERED PARTICIPANT

Welcome to Walk for Apraxia®! Thank you for your interest in your local Walk for Apraxia event. Our walk program is North America’s only national apraxia awareness program and our signature fundraising program. These successful walk events not only generate vital funds for apraxia research and programs but also raises awareness about apraxia. CASANA is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to the interest and needs of children with apraxia of speech and their families. CASANA’s mission is to improve the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia of speech so that each child is afforded their best possibilities to reach their full potential in speech and communication. Walk for Children with Apraxia Funds go toward CASANA programs and research. Funds raised have helped to:      

Rebuild and redesign the Apraxia-KIDS informational website. Run the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Intensive Training Institute to develop more apraxia expertise among speech-language pathologists. Create the Apraxia Research Registry to aid researchers in learning more about the causes and outcomes of childhood apraxia of speech. Fund research into effective treatments and diagnosis of children with apraxia. Provide iPads and protective cases for children with apraxia from moderate to low income families. Bring international researchers together to share state of the art research, collaborate and move apraxia research forward.

In this Guide you will find Information on how to register to participate and wrap around events.

How to Register. Become a Participant in our Cause. Below is an outline of the steps that will lead you to a successful fundraising campaign. The pages that follow offer step by step instructions on each step along with screenshots.

Step 1: How do you want to Register? There are several options available to you when first registering for an event. When you decide to register you’ll first be prompted with which type of registration you’d like to use.

What is a Walk Team? A walk team includes anyone and everyone who wants to join in the effort to raise money for apraxia programs and research. Family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, children and adults create walk teams. Walk teams and their fundraising efforts drive the success of a walk. More team walkers means an increased opportunity for fundraising and increased awareness of apraxia. You can either start a team or join a team. If you don’t start a team or join one when initially registering you can always do so later by emailing [email protected]. Just send an email identifying the Walk location and the names of the participants you’d like to have added to a team.

A. Start a Team If you decide to start a team, you’ll be prompted to create a Team name and set fundraising goals. You can always change your goals at a later date. Team names cannot be changed.

B. Join a Team If you decide to join a team you’ll be asked which team you’d like to join from a drop down menu. Only teams that have been created by someone else will be available to select from this screen. If you’d like to create a new walk team, go back and select “Start a Team.”

C. Join as an Individual Anyone can participate in a Walk for Apraxia® event as an Individual Walker! People who choose to participate as Individual Walkers do not belong to a specific Walk Team; rather, Individual Walkers choose to participate as a single member of their local Walk for Apraxia® event. Along with hundreds of other Walk participants, Individual Walkers will attend Walk Day and collect donations. You can join a team at a later date if you so choose by emailing [email protected] with your walk location and the team you’d like to join. If you decide to “Join as an Individual” you will be taken to Step 3.

D. Register Multiple People or Register a Family The main difference between registering multiple people or a family is the personal fundraising pages available to you upon completion. When choosing to register multiple people each individual will have their own personal fundraising page. However, when registering a family, you will have one fundraising page for the whole family (this option is best if you do not wish to have a personal page for any children). Please note there is no way to switch to a family option at a later time. When you decide to either register Multiple People or a Family you will be prompted to decide whether to start, join a team or keep everyone as individuals. We can create or add you to a team at any time by emailing [email protected] with the walk location and the names of the individuals you wish to add along with the team name.

 

If you select “Start a Team” you will be taken to a screen similar to the one above for “Start a Team” If you select “Join a Team” you will be taken to a screen similar to the one above for “Join a Team”

Step 2: Create a Username and Password A. If you have previously registered for a Walk for Apraxia® event you can reuse the username and password you already have by clicking on the hypertext.

A pop up window will appear asking you to enter that information to login. If you forgot your username and/or password you can have it resent to the email address you registered with. Be sure to check your spam filter settings with your email to ensure you receive the reset notification.

B. If this is your first Walk for Apraxia® event you’ll be prompted to create a new username and password. Keep this information somewhere for reference later as you’ll need it to login to access your personal headquarters.

Step 3: Enter Personal Information, Select Type of Registration, and Shirt Size

Please Note: If you are not starting a team you will not be prompted for the Team Page URL. If you are joining a team, the Team Captain (the individual who started the team) created a Team Page URL already.

Children participants are under the age of 18.

You are given the option of adding a donation in addition to your registration fee at this point in registering. Donations can be made at any point in time afterwards by selecting “GIVE” from the Event Homepage.

 

If you are registering as an individual, skip to Step 4. If you are registering multiple people or a family you will see:

Select the “Add ____ ” button (it will either read “Add Team Members” or “Add Individuals” depending on whether you are on a team or not when registering). Repeat this step again for each additional team member.

You do not need to retype all the personal information if it is the same for each individual. When you have entered all members of your team or family select “Process Order.”

Step 4: Enter Billing Information When all participants in the transaction have been added, you will be prompted to enter billing information.

Utilizing Your Personal Headquarters Once registered, you can set up your own personal page with photos, text, and much more! To login you’ll need the username and password you created when you registered. There are two ways to login from the Walk for Apraxia® event homepage.  

Don’t know how to get started? Here are some sample emails: 

I’m walking for our (son/daughter, name). You can help CASANA with research to learn more about how best to treat apraxia by supporting me as I walk. Please visit my personal/team page to read my reason for walking. Thank you so much! Please help me make a difference! I’m walking to celebrate our (son/daughter) who has made incredible strides this year. We know that there is still a long road ahead but the future is bright. CASANA is investing in research to learn more about the causes and treatment for apraxia. Please visit my personal/team page to make a donation today! As you may know, our (son/daughter) was recently diagnosed with apraxia. Thank goodness for CASANA! The Family Start Guide was our roadmap through those first weeks and has been an amazing tool that we needed when we were searching for information. I’m walking to help raise money for research so more resources will become available for families like ours. I’m asking all of my friends and family to help me reach my goal of (insert goal) by making a donation. Please visit my personal/team page to make a donation today!

Matching Gifts Double your donations! Matching gifts are a great way to increase your total fundraising dollars for CASANA. Find out if your employer has a matching gifts program. Some companies don’t just match gifts made by employees- but gifts made by spouses and retirees.

When and How to Turn in Your Donations If your donors make a donation online, you will be credited through the automatic system and receive an email alerting you of the gift. Donations made online are typically 40% higher than those made by other means. If your donor gives you cash or checks, please fill out the donation form for each donation. You can bring the money with you to the walk to turn them in or mail them to CASANA. Please do not mail cash! A donation form can be downloaded from your Event Headquarters under Tools. This will ensure that your walk and/or team are credited for their donation. Mail donations to: CASANA, 416 Lincoln Ave., 2nd Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15209 Once again, thank you for your support!

Wrap Around Events What is a Wrap-Around event? Wraparounds are fundraisers that you can hold to increase awareness and raise extra funds for the Walk. All expenses for wraparounds are incurred by the fundraiser. Examples: Car washes/Lemonade Stand- Great way to include teens and kids into fundraising while staying cool in the summer heat. Garage/Yard Sale- Plan a garage/yard sale to add to your fundraising efforts. Clean out your closets and get team members to donate their items. Restaurant Giveback Events- Some restaurants will work with charities to host an event where a percent of the proceeds are donated. Some restaurants that do this include Chipotle and Ruby Tuesday. Contact the local restaurant to pick the date and work with them to promote it locally. Contact CASANA to obtain a copy of our tax id information which is needed for them to issue the check.
