Part 2: Conceptual Framework Scaffold (2000 words for research)

Research ONE artist from the following list:      

Damien Hirst Christian Boltanski Claire Healy & Sean Cordeiro Simryn Gill Ricky Swallow Mona Hatoum Personal choice (This must be negotiated with the teacher)

-All Conceptual Framework questions must be answered for the selected artist. -Clearly identify questions by number under the key headings ‘Artist’, ‘Artwork’, ‘World’ and audience’. Remember to:      

refer to an artist by their full name or surname, not their Christian name use subject specific terminology be selective and concise in your choice of content manage your time efficiently consistently review the marking criteria during, and prior to submitting the task collect and analyse a range of sources and record all references correctly in the Research Journal.

Remember that:  

only information documented in your research journal can be used to complete the task. although your Research Journal is specifically intended for this task, the process is ongoing and one which you are expected to apply to all areas of Art Critical &Historical studies.

ARTIST: Approximately 250-300 words    

Identify the artist and explain some key points about the artist’s life E.g. personal experiences, cultural background, cultural issues. Discuss the influences that affected the artist’s art making – e.g. personal interests, beliefs, personal codes and/or symbols. Include quotes and relevant excerpts from interviews that reflect the artist’s influences and practice. A minimum of 2 examples of either interviews/reviews or quotes, or any combination of these is required. Briefly outline the point of view presented (examine the language used – positive or negative) & how this quote can be used to support a response about the artist’s practice.

ARTWORK: Approximately 900-1000 words 

Explain the form the artist’s practice takes.

 List the media, materials, processes and techniques that are used.  Discuss at least 2 artworks that best represent what the artist is aiming to achieve in his or her practice with regard to knowledge, intentions and materials used. These must be 3D artworks. Include copies in your research. (2 artworks in total).  Explain the purpose of each artwork. What specific personal narrative or beliefs have been depicted?  Describe how the artist has used visual language i.e. signs, symbols, elements and principles in each artwork. Select the 3 most relevant elements or principles of design to discuss in detail.  Examine the artist’s personal style and identify key characteristics of this.  An image of each artwork with detailed annotations is required(minimum150 words for each artwork) WORLD: Approximately 250 words 

Outline the time and place evident in the artist’s art making practice.

 Discuss specific aspects of the world the artist chooses to comment on in their art making. I.e. Gender, race, class, place. Explain how the artworks are a reflection of an idea OR personal response OR cultural view. (You do not need to refer to all of these if they are not relevant to the artist). This should be evident in the artworks the artist has created. AUDIENCE: Approximately 250 words 

Does the artist approach personal ideas in new, challenging ways? If so, how? Consider the artist’s use of media, concepts/ideas, techniques or style in your response.

 Analyse the impact of the artist’s works on audiences. Look for ONE critical review and any feedback from audiences to support your response. Remember to reference these correctly.  Identify significant exhibitions the artist has participated in and explain the significance of ONE of these.  If relevant, discuss patronage, commissions, sponsors or ‘art for art’s sake’.

Part 3: Essay Scaffold -The suggested length of the essay response is 1000-1200 words.

You will submit an essay based on the two artists. This must include the artist you have researched for Part 2, and one artist studied in class. 

Remember to break down the selected question by circling the glossary term, underlining key words and boxing the limiting words.

Ensure that your essay includes the following:    

An introduction, body and conclusion Paragraphs that have a topic sentence and a variety of correctly structured topic sentences Include the use of subject specific terminology and visual language Remember to use PEEL to structure your response Edit your work using CUPS prior to submitting the task.

Essay Question: Explain the relationships between the conceptual and material practice of at least TWO artists and artworks that you have studied. Demand of the question:  Explain means to relate cause and effect; make the relationships between things evident; provide why and/or how. Answers could include:     

The ideas, intentions and motivations of artists (conceptual practice) The physicality of the artwork through the application of materials, techniques and forms (material practice) Relationships between the practice of artists including collaboration, similarities, differences, material and conceptual relationships across thematic or stylistic issues. Conceptual and material practices of artists within specific art styles, art forms or historical periods. The relationship between material and conceptual practices as influenced by cultural or geographic factors.

Your essay must: Be word processed  Have a title-(consider the audience and the context of the article to provide interest)  Include appropriate referencing, if applicable.

Introduction: (Paragraph No. 1) Start your essay with your definition of practice, and introduce the two artists you have selected, commenting briefly on the important characteristics (both material & conceptual) of their practice, and their artistic intentions within their historical context (time & place). Try to find a link between the two artists (a similarity or difference-e.g. subject matter, style, use of media) to unify your response. Approximate length 10 to 15 lines Body: (Paragraph 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) - 3 Paragraphs for each artist Discuss the practice (material & conceptual) of the first artist, and explain how this is shown through TWO specific examples of their work. You need to explain and analyse each example. You should have a general paragraph in which you explain the main characteristics of their practice, and place them in their historical/social and/or geographic context. Then, ONE paragraph for each example, in which you analyse and interpret the work using the structural frame, including visual codes as well as materials and techniques. Develop a sentence which links the two artists, saying how they are similar or different. Then do the same thing (i.e. THREE paragraphs) for the second artist, again explaining the relationship between their material & conceptual practice. Ensure you analyse and explain their intentions, and some ways in which they have used their choice of materials, techniques and visual language in order to communicate their ideas. Approximately 6 paragraphs, 15 to 20 lines for each paragraph. Conclusion: 1 paragraph

Summarise the key aspects of each artists’ practice, and the most important ways in which they have communicated their intentions to audiences through their material & conceptual practice.

Ideas to help with Research & Essay Writing 

Collect facts about the Artist’s life and plot them on a timeline.



Find quotes or exhibition reviews about the artist and works, and examine the language used – positive or negative – summarises in a table.



Complete charts summarising features of artworks under the Conceptual Framework headings –artist, artwork, world, audience



Build a word bank of descriptive words and art specific terminology as you research.



Don’t just use the internet- use books and journals.



Use a number of pieces of paper or word documents with appropriate headings e.g. artist, artwork, world etc. to categorise your note taking as you go.



Try and sequence your ideas when refining your information.



Once the information is gathered, analyse or break up the essay question chosen into components, so you are clear as to what information is relevant to answer the question.

Linking words: Consider: What words are used to show consequences - therefore, in effect, because, so that, in order to …….. What words are used to compare and contrast - however, alternatively, on the other hand, elsewhere …….. What words are used to exemplify - such as, including, for instance. 

Use language to keep your audience interested – people such as art critics and art historians, as well as those who may not know much about art.
