April 2009

Dear South High Community: This is the time of the school year that requires the greatest amount of our attention and energy. Our students have returned from their spring recess with lots of enthusiasm and a bit of unbridled energy. One of the most important aspects of school administration is to maintain an organizational structure that is predictable and focused on student achievement. At South we refer to this all year as maintaining an academic tone. This is also the time of year when I need parents to remind their students to keep their attention directed towards their academic goals and not on any nonsense disrupting our organizational focus on achievement. I believe a strong partnership aimed at high expectations will allow our students to flourish and achieve. I appreciate parental influence and the words of wisdom you can provide during this time of the school year. Recently three of our seniors certainly demonstrated academic excellence and were distinguished with state-wide honors. Alec Sydlow was chosen as one of the top fifteen seniors in the state of Missouri in school and community citizenship. In addition, Laura Maguire and Xiaoran (Sharon) Xu were recognized as two of Missouri’s top seniors in the Missouri Scholars 100 competition. Laura and Sharon earned this distinction as a result of their dedication to learning and earning high marks in the state’s academic decathlon. Please help me honor these three seniors for their commitment to maintaining an academic focus and representing South High in such a positive manner. Our administrative team devotes much of its energy on hiring outstanding teachers at this time of year. I believe the strength of South High is a result of the adults who work with our students. Hiring strong teachers who love working with adolescents and who know their content well is the best way to guarantee student success. Our administrative team and team leaders have been hard at work screening and interviewing potential teachers with the purpose of securing the best in the area. So far we have recommended nine teachers to the board and soon I hope to have the remaining four teaching positions filled. I know you will be as impressed as I am with our newest South High faculty members; they will continue our tradition of building strong student relationships for the purpose of increasing student achievement. I will welcome all the teachers to the South High community when they have been approved by the Board of Education for hire.

Currently we are working to improve several aspects of our curriculum and programs. A South High team of science teachers and school administrators have been meeting with our district engineer and an architectural firm to develop drawings and plans for the new four million dollar renovation to our existing science classrooms. The process is very exciting, and it is rewarding to me to think that I’m hiring teachers and designing classrooms that will impact future South High students. Not many leadership positions provide opportunities to make decisions that will have a lasting impact for twenty or more years. This is one of many reasons why we need everyone in our school, including students, focused on achievement. A focus on anything else detracts from the excellence for which we all strive. Earning distinction as one of the top high schools in the country doesn’t happen by chance; it is the combined effort of all our stakeholders working towards greatness. Thank you for reminding your students to finish the school year with an aim towards greatness. In doing so, it provides the opportunity for success and outstanding achievement in all corners of our organization. With Patriot Pride,

Gary Mazzola Principal

END OF COURSE EXAMS (EOC) South High will be administering the Missouri End of Course Exams (EOC) for Algebra I and English II the week of April 27 - May 1, 2009. The EOC assessment replaces the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) at the high school level. It was developed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to adapt testing to the needs of Missouri schools, teachers, and students, while meeting state and federal requirements.

Her essay will be published in Missouri Youth Write, an online publication, available June 2009 www.missouriwestern.edu/scholastic Emalie was honored February 27, 2009, at the Write to Learn Conference at Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach, Missouri. She received a silver key and certificate for her award, a copy of Scholastic’s Best Teen Writing 2008, and a signed copy of a novel from one of the conference’s guest authors. Emalie and her parents were also welcome to attend novelist Chris Crutcher’s keynote address, “Turning Real Life into Fiction.”

The assessments are designed to be administered in approximately two 90minute class periods. Students will take the tests with their classroom teachers during regularly scheduled class periods. Session I will consist of 47 selected response (multiple choice) questions and Session II will have two performance events (writing) Teachers will score the performance event and this grade (10%) will be a part of the student’s semester grade. It is important that all students enrolled in these courses are present for the assessments. Please make every effort to schedule doctor/dentist and other appointments at other times in order to have your child attend school during these testing windows.

The contest was sponsored by the Prairie Lands Writing Project, the Missouri Writing Projects Network, and the Missouri Association of Teachers of English and is an affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

South High will also be field testing the EOC in U.S. Government, U.S. Modern History, Geometry, and English I during the first week of May this year.

Emalie composed her winning essay for the college application essay assignment in AP English Literature and Composition; this class is one of four English classes she elected to take this year. Emalie plans to attend Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in the fall.

CLASS OF 2009 GRADUATION CEREMONY FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2009 QUEENY PARK - 7:30 p.m.

April 2009

Tickets are required for admission for all guests attending - this excludes graduates. To help you plan ahead, the number of this year’s graduates was compared to the maximum number of persons allowed by capacity regulations at Queeny Park, resulting in a maximum number of six guests for each graduate. This number allows the maximum number of tickets to be distributed to each graduate and does not provide for any extras to be distributed later. Be sure to talk with other families of seniors, as each year there are many families who find themselves with extra tickets that they are willing to share. We hope by knowing this information now, families will be able to plan ahead and make arrangements for attending graduation and/or the baccalaureate ceremonies. If your family will need more than six tickets, we encourage you to have other family members attend South High’s Baccalaureate Ceremony on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in Gym A at South High. No tickets are needed for this special night of recognition. Tickets will be distributed to graduating seniors at the mandatory graduation rehearsal on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, in Gym A at South High. Please note: families needing disabled seating or parking should contact Ms. Sue Cosentino at 314-415-7702. If special seating tickets and disabled parking tags are requested, they will be included in the envelope with the graduate’s six admission tickets. For further information regarding graduation, please contact Ms. Barb Pohle at 314-415-7753.

PTO & PALS

PALS 2010 A huge thank you to everyone who has pitched in to help with organizing the Festival of Foods event, concession stand duties and/or attended our Noodles & Co. restaurant night.

Welcome back from spring break. The weather is starting to reflect that it is indeed finally spring in St. Louis! With the nice weather comes spring cleaning, spring training and unfortunately, spring fever. We’re all starting to look forward to the end of school. However, it’s important for us as parents to help our kids stay on track and encourage them to keep working strong all the way to the very end!

PALS 2010 & 2012 Also, along with the PALS 2012 group, we are selling Mizzou's own Shakespeare's Pizza. Each 12 inch pizza is only $8, made fresh in Columbia and frozen for your convenience. Spread the word - and if you are available to help sell pizzas or would like to make a purchase, contact Leigh Anne Gordon at [email protected] or Debbie Schaeffer at [email protected].

We’ve seen great accomplishments by students in so many areas recently; academic and athletic successes, scholarship offers, rave reviews for musical and theater performances it’s amazing the amount of talent that we have here at PSH. Congrats to all for their individual and team successes! During spring conferences, you may have seen posters around the school with various ‘wish lists’ for the departments. The list has been compiled and printed in this newsletter so that you can refer to it. It’s a great opportunity to pick up a few items to help out the classrooms or just to say “thanks” to your students’ teachers. Items may be sent in at any time; just label and deliver to your student’s teacher.

THANKS TO THE VOLUNTEERS We would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who provided desserts for the spring parent teacher conference dinner. Many thanks to Christa Andrew, Sherry Angevine, Debbie Audiffred, Sonya Barge, Carol Basler, Linda Bertram, Elaine Calloni, Donna Collins, Jane Drago, Barbara Dunlop, Kate Egan, Rita Fitzjarrell, Leigh Anne Gordon, Angie Haller, Mary Hammett, Gerrie Herrmann, Debbie Howe, Mary Johnston, Nanci Martin, Tracy McMonigle, Maureen Morrow, Tracie Mueller, Jennifer Palazzolo, Kathy Saitz, Denise Saunders, Genny Schumacher and Cheryl Wingbermuehle.

Please join us for our next general PTO meeting on Tuesday, April 21st, 7 p.m, when we will have a short business meeting followed by our volunteer appreciation celebration. We will be acknowledging the many hours of valuable help by our numerous parent volunteers! Want to be more involved in South’s PTO? We will soon begin filling open board positions. Some of the openings and their respective duties are listed below. • Co-President – Organize and run monthly executive board and PTO meetings. Coordinate committee chairs and attend monthly district meetings. This is a two year term. • Government Relations – Review local, state and federal policy issues that affect the operations of the District and make recommendations to the superintendent and Board of Education. Meeting are held monthly during the day. • Parkway Ambassador – Communicate school news to the media. There are several daytime training meetings. • Spirit Night Coordinator – Plan and organize the beginning of the year celebration and activities with school administrators. Planning for this event begins in April and continues though the first week of school.

PALS 2011 PALS 2011 is starting their engines. It’s time to start getting involved! We have a few things in the works right now. We will need volunteers to work the Summer School concessions at South Middle this summer. The two work shifts will be 7:20 - 8 a.m. and 9:50 - 10:15 a.m. Watch your email for a sign up request from PALS 2011! If you have a new email address please send a note to us at so we can update our address book: [email protected] We will also be recruiting volunteers to help with next year’s Festival of Foods. We are still looking for a few committee chairs, but we need lots of helpers. We will be distributing a list soon.

Please let us know if you are interested in being a part of the South High PTO. We will be happy to find a job for you!

Does anyone have a “connection” for a venue to host a fundraising event? PALS 2011 has a fun event to plan and we are looking for a place to host it. We need a place that could hold 160-200 guests. If you have any leads please call Cindy Scanlon @ 636-627-7338.

Happy Spring! Debbie Howe ([email protected]) & Genny Schumacher ([email protected]) PTO Co-Presidents

Don’t forget to check out the PALS 2011 apparel sale! We have navy blue hoodies and red, white or blue polo’s for sale! Check out the order form in the newsletter!

MATH STUDENT QUALIFIES

MARKETING NEWS

Congratulations to South High math club member Michael Zhao who has just become the first student in the history of South High School to qualify to take the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO).

Congratulations to Mrs. Terri Heller’s Marketing 2 class in completing another successful season of “The Parkway South Apprentice.” The Marketing 2 students competed in four grueling challenges from creating a catalog, inventing a new toy, creating a marketing plan for a new pizza for the Corner Pub and Grill, and raising over $1,500 for the Parkway South SOS campaign.

To accomplish this, Michael had to score in the top 1% of 9th and 10th graders nationally on the American Mathematics Competition -10 (AMC-10). He then advanced on to the three hour, 15 question American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). Michael competed with 10,025 other students, and was one of only 514 students invited to participate in the USAMO, placing him in the top 5% of students from grades 9-12 in the United States and Canada. The USAMO is a nine hour contest given over two days. It is the last round the United States gives to choose the top 6 students in the country to represent the U.S. in the International Mathematical Olympiad, this year it is being held in Berlin, Germany.

The new apprentices for 2009 are: Taylor Madden Ryan Debolt Taylor Ingram Kevin Chervitz

PALS 2009 FUNDRAISER This is the final half of our student’s senior year, we are also wrapping up our four years of fundraising for the After Grad party! The money we have raised will go toward the hotel, entertainment, and prizes. The one fundraiser we are still working on is selling Dierbergs and Shop-N-Save grocery cards. We are still working to raise the amount of money we had budgeted for selling these cards. Remember, if we can meet our fundraising goal it will help keep the cost of the individual tickets down. It is a very easy way to make money. We buy the cards at face value and we make 5% profit. We have both $25 and $100 cards. This is a great way to help out if you don’t have much time to help out in other ways.

April 2009 A collaboration between Parkway School District & Maryville University located at South High School 801 Hanna Rd. Manchester, MO 63021

The Parkway/Maryville Summer Academy 2009

June 8 - July 10, 2009

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Established in 1984 as a partnership between Brown University and selected secondary schools throughout the country, the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is devoted to strengthening student learning by helping schools reshape their priorities. South High and Maryville University have collaborated to develop a program based upon the Coalition’s ten principles, some of which include: • • • •

personalized instruction in a small group setting teacher as "coach" rather than "lecturer" student as "active worker" rather than "listener" in-depth exploration and discussion of subject areas

Teachers strive to create an intellectually rich environment, which emphasizes active involvement in the learning process. The Academy also provides a forum for educators to share ideas for the improvement of instruction. STUDENTS Students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2009 may attend. Motivated learners, who wish to explore a wide variety of topics, are encouraged to apply. LOCATION South High School 801 Hanna Road Manchester, MO 63021 COST Tuition is free to all students unless otherwise stated in the brochure which was mailed to Parkway families on March 26. DATES AND TIMES The Academy will run June 8 - July 10. Classes will meet Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. 1st Block 2nd Block

7:30 - 10:00 10:10 - 12:40

A celebration of the summer program will take place during Exhibition Evening, on July 9. During this special event, the expectation is all students will demonstrate aspects of their mastery of learning from the summer program. ATTENDANCE Summer school is a five-week program for all students. High school credit is earned by being present and participating in class. A third absence will result in a loss of credit and participation in the course, and the student will be dropped from the course(s). TRANSPORTATION Two-way bus service to the Academy will be provided from selected Parkway schools and from the city of St. Louis for Parkway VST students. COURSES Students may enroll in one or two course(s). Registration will be on a first-come first-served basis and classes will be assigned as such. Applicants should list their course choice(s) and at least two alternates, in order of preference, from which their class(es) will be assigned. Effort will be made to place students in their first choice(s), but due to limited space, alternatives may be necessary. Staff members believe, however, that all participants, whatever their course assignment(s), will benefit from the Academy's commitment to stimulate curiosity, to delve into ideas, and to encourage students to take responsibility to become independent learners. 24

April 2009

At this time we plan to offer the following courses: Golf, PE 1, Walking Fitness, Strength Training and Conditioning Algebra 1 Lab, Algebra 2 Lab, Geometry Lab, Algebra 1, Geometry World History, Modern U.S. History Crimes, Criminals and Corrections History vs. Hollywood Health English 1, English 2, English 3, St. Louis History Through Food and Culture Personal Finance, Keyboarding Metalsmithing, Digital Photography Physics 1, Biology 1 For information regarding remedial course selections, please contact your child’s counselor at 314-415-7709.

REGISTRATION

Registration for Parkway residents began on April 7th. Registration/Health forms can be found in the Parkway Community School Summer Course Guide, which will be mailed to South area students in late March. You may access the summer program guide and registration/health forms after April 1st at www.pkwy.k12.mo.us/communityed/index.cfm You may also call Parkway South High's summer school voice mail (after April 1st) at 314-415-5798 Please leave your name, phone number and a brief message. Messages will be checked frequently.

∗ WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SUMMER ACADEMY EXPERIENCE: • "I liked doing many things with what we learned and going even beyond!" • "It was a very enjoyable summer school." • "The teachers acted like coaches and created less pressure and stress" • "The teachers don't lecture as much and let us learn on our own. I learned more history in my mock trial than I did in history class. The class is very effective. . . " • "I liked hands-on experiments and feeling like the teachers were talking to you, not the whole class." • "Overall this school was a challenge. It was different from what I experience at my school." (*taken from previous end-of-summer surveys)

Counseling

Counselors have completed registration process for the 2009-2010 school year. All students were scheduled to meet individually with their counselor during the month of February. Great care was taken to assure accuracy of course selections for next year and every effort will be made to schedule your student into their first choice courses, but please understand that substitute electives were requested from every student AP testing will occur in May. Please have your student pay their remaining balance on all AP tests. All test dates are national dates between May 4th – May 15th. Visit the College Board Web site for specific dates and times of tests. http://www.collegeboard.com/ student/testing/ap/cal/cal2.html

Seniors: Now is the time to complete applications for 2 year colleges. Remember that St. Louis Community College requires a placement test called the Accuplacer if you do not have an ACT composite score of at least 21. Please see your counselor for more information or visit www.stlcc.edu/Admissions_and_Registration/Getting_Started/Assessment_Placement_Tests.html for more information FAFSA forms need to be completed before mid April to be considered for any Federal Student Aid. Contact the financial aid department at your selected college for assistance if you have any questions.

Juniors: Make plans to begin visiting colleges between now and next fall. Colleges are frequently visiting the College and Career Center. Come to the counseling loft for a calendar of college visits and to sign up or view these on Naviance Family Connections website. All juniors should consider taking the ACT or SAT prior to senior year. There is still time for all juniors to sign up for the ACT on June 13th. Registration can be completed at www.actstudent.org

Summer Programs and Volunteer Experiences Summer may feel like it is still a long way off, but it is quickly approaching. For students that means there is some choice of how to spend their time. We receive and collect a great deal of information about summer programs and volunteer experiences and have a collection available for students to review. These materials are housed in the College and Career Center. There will be many pamphlets, brochures, applications, and ideas available this spring for students to browse through and consider.

District Career Fair Planned for Spring of 2010 The Parkway School District is in the process of planning a district-wide Career Fair to be held in the spring of 2010. This will be a futuristic, global focus fair with an emphasis on the changing workplace for the next generation. We are looking to represent dozens of careers with adults willing to talk about their own work in terms of necessary preparation, as well as what is likely to be required to enter this field 5 – 10 years from now. We also want to talk with students about jobs and opportunities that might not even exist yet. One of South's counselors, Mr. Rob Lappin, is co-chairing the initiative for Parkway. If you might be interested in helping us, please fill out the bottom portion of this form and mail it to: Parkway South High Attn: Rob Lappin 801 Hanna Rd Manchester MO 63021 or contact Rob at 314-415-7783 or [email protected] At this point we are simply looking to gather as many names and occupations as possible. We are not expecting a final commitment from parents or businesses yet. Once we have a better idea of what occupations can be represented we will contact you again with more information. We are looking for as many occupations as possible and are hoping to have a strong focus on how jobs have changed throughout the years and how they are likely to continue to change. The date has not been set yet but it will likely be in March of 2010. This is a one evening event and we are only asking for a few hours of your time.
