WELCOME TO SACRAMENTO UNITED PARK(ing) DAY! What is Park(ing) Day? PARK(ing) Day is an international annual event in which activists and citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks and other social spaces. PARK(ing) Day was invented in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, to encourage people to rethink the way streets are used. Since then, PARK(ing) Day has grown into an international event taking place in over 160 cities on 6 continents. More information on this wordwide event can be found online at http://parkingday.org/about-parking-day/

Sacramento United PARK(ing) Day 2016 - Come Play on 9th St! With the recent focus on reinvestment into Sacramento’s downtown core, this year’s event will be held on 9th St between J St and K St to demonstrate creative design solutions that enhance the pedestrian experience in downtown. This year, our creative community will transform 9th St. into a series of temporary parklets that encourage ‘play’ in the urban environment. By grouping our efforts together, we showcase a broad vision of how to re-imagine Sacramento’s streets, expose the general public to what parklets are, encourage business /property owners to explore the possibility of creating more permanent parklets, and engage local policy makers in dicussion about how we may be able to improve the City's current parklet standards (visit sacpark.org for more information about the current standards).

LETS BUILD ON THE SUCCESS OF OUR PAST PARK(ing) DAY EVENTS!

ENTRY METHOD AND MATERIALS SACRAMENTO UNITED PARK(ing) DAY IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR... WE HAVE A THEME! We are inviting anyone, including designers, makers, artists, landscape architects, architects, engineers, musicians, performers and creatives to re-imagine Sacramento streets as platforms for ‘PLAY’, however you define it. Currently, there’s a lack of play opportunities in our downtown streets. As creatives, how can we solve this problem? How can we improve our streets through ‘play’? So, what does play mean to you?... is it simple or complex? is it active or passive? is it one-of-a-kind or modular? is it kinetic or static? is it innovative or traditional? is it audible or silent? is it site-specific or universal? To participate, you must RSVP by submitting the following: a. Completed signed entry form (see digitally fillable entry form at WWW.ASLA-SIERRA.ORG/PARKINGDAY, no fees required to participate) b. Quick napkin sketch of your concept (hand drawn or digital). 6”x6” size. File no larger than 2MB File name: NAME OF CONCEPT_Concept Sketch.jpg. c. Email above items to [email protected] The deadline to submit concepts is FRIDAY AUGUST 5th, 2016 at 6PM. Submissions after the deadline date are not guaranteed participation at PARK(ing) Day. If your firm or organization is interested in sponsoring Sacramento United Park(ing) Day, please see the sponsorship form at the back of this packet. Questions? Email: [email protected].

PARK(ing) SPOTS sidewalk curb

v-gutter

7'-8'

Once you submit a concept, you will be assigned a parking spot for your installation which corresponds with the map below. The dimension for these spots are approximately 7’-8' x 22’-27' curb to edge. The curb-and-gutter is non-typical with a v-shaped gutter pan. This is very important if you intend to design a platform flush to the top of curb. Participants are required to confirm the dimensions of their assigned spot in field. If you have a preference for a small or large spot, or if you require less than a full stall, please indicate in your submission.
