Park safely and keep our kids safe This year our school is participating in Auckland Transport’s ‘Safety at the School Gate’ programme. Drivers who stop in the wrong place to drop off passengers put the safety of children at risk. Parking officers will be on patrol outside the school this year and will be issuing tickets to drivers who park illegally. The agreed approach is ‘zero tolerance’ – There will be no warnings issued, you will receive a ticket if you are double parked, parked on yellow lines, or over someone’s driveway – or for any other vehicle safety offence. Please parksafely legally to keepoutside our children safeschools and to avoid being Park ticketed. Before and after school is a busy time for everyone. Parking rules help protect our children and keep them safe. Drivers who park illegally put our kids at risk. This term parking officers will be on patrol outside your school to issue tickets to those who are illegally parked. Fines for illegal parking include:

The Kelstonian

Welcome back to Term 2!!

Term 2, Week 1

Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Engaged

From the Principal’s Desk Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Fakalofa lahi atu, Namaste, Kiaorana, Ni Sa Bula, Ni Hao, Assalaam alaikum, Ku Musta Ka me Tena Koutou Katoa Kia ora whanau, great to be back at school and looking forward to a great term. Check out what’s happening this term in our learning letters included in this newsletter and we look forward to another awesome term at Kelston Intermediate. My trip to Washington DC and San Francisco was a huge learning experience and an eye opening one, specifically regarding the education systems and practices around the world. We had the privilege of interacting with and listening to world renowned researches and educationalists that are leaders in their areas of expertise. I have already started to share some of my learning among our staff and look forward to developing our educational approaches further to continue enhancing the great job we do for our students and whanau at Kelston Intermediate. Our thoughts are also of those who sacrificed a great deal for the country and

whanau as we commemorate our 100th ANZAC day memorial Lest We Forget

E kore ratou e koroheketia Penei i a tatou kua mahue nei E kore hoki ratou e ngoikore Ahakoa pehea i nga ahuatanga o te wa. I te hekenga atu o te ra Tae noa ki te aranga mai i te ata Ka maumahara tonu tatou ki a ratou. Ka maumahara tonu tatou ki a ratou.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. We will remember them. Have a Great Week Be Respectful, Responsible and Engaged Thought for the Week…. Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell not stuff to show. WE ARE KELSTON

Team Kotahitanga This term Team Kotahitanga is made up of an awesome team of teachers. From left to right we have:

Mr Maharaj in Te Urunga Whaea Terina raua ko Matua Tyler in Nga Kakano Ka Puawai I Te Reo Mr Tasi in Tamatoa Mrs Tuaoi in Kai Kafe Whaea Lopasi as team support. Mrs Laing will lead the team while Miss Napa is away overseas this term.

O le fogava’a e tasi – One Family Term 2 is going to be fast and furious so get ready, be prepared and make sure you hold on for the ride! New Beginnings – Nga Koru hou.

We would like to welcome Miss Tuaoi to our school for term 2, although she is new to the Kelston whanau she is an experienced teacher with many strengths and qualities that will shine throughout the year. Miss Tuaoi will be taking Kai Kafe (food technology) this term.

We Are Kelston Taumata It’s time to try and extend ourselves this term. “We Are Kelston Taumata” is in full effect and we must raise the bar and earn our bands this term. BE RESPECTFUL BY: * Trial for sports this term and try and make a team. We have soccer, rugby, league, basketball and volleyball all coming up this term. Peer mediators, road patrol and office monitors have already been selected but you could volunteer to back up other students who are unable to do their duties. See Mrs Laing or Mrs Tariu if you are interested.

* Challenge yourself to be more involved in team events. During class meetings discuss how your class can arrange an event that all our school teams could volunteer in. Maybe create a Ki-o-rahi team challenge at lunchtime, run the morning fitness for Mr Tasi or run a cake stall afterschool in the driveway to raise money for a good cause. BE RESPOSNSIBLE BY: *Get to school on time, setting goals to a high standard and completing classroom tasks are all taumata tahi. We need to work beyond this in Term 2. * Being well organised means knowing what’s happening at school before you arrive and having all necessary gear ready. It means knowing when school trips are on, returning permission forms, telling teachers and coaches where your responsibilities are for the day and letting others know why you were absent from various things. BE ENGAGED BY: * Setting goals is a given but achieving these beyond the expectation means you have worked really hard to complete the goal. If you are working at level 3 (as all year 7s should be) then strive to achieve level 4 by the end of term 3.

* Create a working environment where everyone wants to work with you, not because you entertain everyone but because you show great leadership skills and get everyone on board and moving in the same direction.

Don’t forget to save these dates! Y7&8 Netball starts at Te Pai Courts Wednesday 4th May 4.30 – 6pm NZ Sign Language Week 9 - 13th May NZ Sign Language Week Y8 Girls Self defense 9 - 13th May ICAS Testing starts Tuesday 17th May KIS Fun Run – every student must raise $20 as part of this event.
