Palm Oil and Sustainable Renewable Energy Development in Malaysia

ECO-IDEAL CONSULTING Pioneering A Sustainable Future

PALM OIL AND SUSTAINABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY Why consider developing Renewable Energy? • Conversion of abundant by-products (waste) to useful, clean energy; • Minimise long term waste management cost, generate sustainable income; • Reduce dependence on other energy suppliers and sustain further downstream processes (e.g. conversion of EFB to pellets); • In line with Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Principle 5 (Environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity); • In line with Government’s policy in developing renewable energy; and • In line with the Government’s commitment to reduce 40% of Greenhouse Gas Emission by 2020.

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY • Currently, the world’s energy demand rely mainly on its fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, natural gas etc. which are finite and nonrenewable resources; • Significant consumption of fossil-fueled energy is a primary source of GHG emissions which can lead to global warming as well as many other localised pollutions e.g. acidification of buildings and soils; and • To ensure sustainability and security of fuel supply, emerging alternatives like renewable energy are definitely the way forward.

Our Services Our specific services include: • Policy and Planning; • Feasibility Study and Survey; • Assistance on Small Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) application; • Technical Design and Technology; and • Capacity Building, Training and Research.

Our Strength(s) and Track Records Our experiences and knowledge of the local business culture and expectations will ensure our advice and services fulfill the client’s needs. The selected references are as listed below: • Pre-feasibility on biogas production from palm oil waste in selected areas of Malaysia; • SREP application for Bukit Tagar Landfill Gas to Power Generation Project in Selangor; • Development of “A Guide to Energy Efficiency Management in Sewage Treatment” for Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd; • Conceptual design for integrated waste management and renewable energy for centralised livestock farming area, Samarahan division of Sarawak; • DANIDA Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Component; • Identification and review of biogas suppliers for POME biogas in Johor; • Barrier analysis of biomass supply chain as renewable fuel in Malaysia for DANIDA/ Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Renewable Energy/ Energy Efficiency Project; and • Policy analysis in waste to energy projects (landfills, palm oil waste as well as biodiesel) for DANIDA/ EPU Renewable Energy/ Energy Efficiency Project.

CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM (CDM) • Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a flexible financing mechanism for climatefriendly environmental investment.; • A mechanism for developed countries to support sustainable development while meeting their greenhouse gases (GHG) emission target; and • The project were financed and supported from or through the sales from Certified Emission Reduction (CERs).

Our CDM Services Going through the process of CDM project development and application requires highly specialised skills and experiences. We are dedicated to provide “OneStop” services, from developing and guiding GHG emission reduction projects step by step from start to finish for both project developers and buyers of CERs. We also undertake research and studies as well as capacity building for both the governmental and private sectors in dealing with CDM issues. Our specific services include: • CDM Project Initiation and Feasibility Assessment; • CDM Project Management and Documentation ; • Technology Supply and Installation; • Carbon Trading and Evaluation; and • Capacity Building, Training and Research.

Our Strength(s) and Track Records Our understanding of the key success factors in CDM is one of the most important strength of our team. Our experiences and knowledge of the local business culture and expectation will ensure our advice and services will fulfill the client’s needs. Successful CDM documentation requires skills and detailed understanding of technical aspects of the project in question. Eco-Ideal’s forerunning position as one of the leading consultants in waste management and renewable energy in Malaysia complements our provision of CDM related professional services to our clients. In this respect, we have excuted numerous important baseline studies on GHG emissions, potential in the waste sectors and so forth. We have assisted the first POME biogas project in the world to achieve registration with the United Nations CDM Executive Board. Currently, we are in process of developing PINs and PDDs for our numerous projects. We have also

assisted in the successful approval of a new CDM Executive Board approved methodology (AM0057) for utilising empty fruit bunches (EFB) in pulp and paper industries. The selected references are as listed below:
