Artist and Teacher Charles Miano

Charles Miano is an American realist painter from New York. His art emphasizes a natural aesthetic through a combination of classic fundamentals and contemporary inspirations. He is the Founder and Director of Southern Atelier, a center of fine art in Sarasota, Florida, as well as a leader in the revival of Classically-Inspired Representationalism.

Art

Through his personal exploration of the nature of painting, and of nature itself, Miano champions representational art both past and present. Imbued with life, vitality and spirit, his work has often been referred to as “visual poetry.” A lush palette, the dynamic use of light and shadow, and an urgency of gesture are his most distinctive signatures. His work reveals the ongoing battles within society, of race, status and class, but on a more personal level the struggle within the self, between emotion and reason. His great passion lies in creating those personal works, born of inter-spiritual reflections, whether drawings or paintings, from head studies to anatomical scales, figure paintings to still-lives.

Education

Miano has always accredited Nature to be his primary educator. However, his Classical Art studies began "on the job" in the 1990’s at the New York Art Department of the International publishing company, The Watchtower Society. There he mentored with accomplished figurative painters such as the noted Rembrandt scholar Allen Boyle and Korean Artist Tim Cho. Miano has attended classes at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, under the tutelage of Nelson Shanks, and at The Art Students League of New York. He has also participated in workshop studies at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Throughout his studies, Charles Miano has placed enormous importance on learning from the Old Masters. To that end, his passion has led him to copy master artworks in major museums nationally and internationally, most notably The Louvre, The Uffizzi, The Bargello, The Metropolitan and The Ringling. Since opening Southern Atelier in the early 2000’s, Charles Miano has studied drawing and painting in the expansive facility, and with the remarkable faculty, he has personally assembled. His fellow instructors include many of the most esteemed contemporary Representational artists including Steven Assael, Robert Liberace, Mary Minifie, Stephen Perkins, Dan Thompson, Romel de la Torre, Clayton J. Beck and John Ebersberger.

Teaching

Through his atelier, and as its “hands-on” director, Miano is widely recognized for his attentive, intensive teaching methods and generous support of emerging artists. There he doggedly pursues in-depth, saturated studies and radical, retro-active experiments alongside contemporary artistic masters of Impressionism and Realism. Miano also travels the globe, teaching and lecturing on realist art and his own personal artistic methods.
