Paid-On-Call Firefighter Recruit Requirements 1.

Must live within a 3 mile radius of the Bryan Fire Station.

2.

Must be between the ages of 18 and 50.

3.

Must possess a High School Diploma or a G.E.D. (A copy must be submitted with application).

4.

Must have a good driving record, fewer than 6 points during the previous four years, and be able to obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Driver’s License. (A copy must be submitted with application).

5.

Must have and maintain the State of Ohio minimum required vehicle insurance on personal vehicle. (A copy of Proof of Insurance must be submitted with application).

6.

Must complete reading comprehension evaluation. (Reading material used during the academy and on the job will be at approximately grade 10 level or higher).

7.

Must successfully pass a background investigation.

8.

Must successfully pass a physical examination, including drug testing by department physician. (Physical is paid for by the City of Bryan after background investigation is completed).

General Information Paid-On-Call Firefighter After you have successfully met and completed the Firefighter Recruit Requirements you will be responsible for the following:

1.

Be on probationary status for a period of 12 months.

2.

Required to attend weekly training, unless excused by the Training Officer or the Fire Chief. Training will last 2 to 3 hours each week. A schedule is posted showing date and subjects.

3.

All recruit firefighters must complete the Firefighter Training Manual on Bryan Fire Department equipment, guidelines, and policies as outlined in the manual. All training must be completed within the time limits set forth in the manual. Certain portions of the Firefighter Training Manual must be completed prior to the start of the Volunteer Firefighter Training class. Recruit Firefighters must pass all training requirements outlined in the Firefighter Training Manual.

4.

All recruit Firefighters must successfully complete the Volunteer Firefighter course within the first year of employment.

5.

All recruit Firefighters must successfully complete the Emergency Medical Technician – Basic course within the second year of employment.

6.

Recruit Firefighters will not drive or operate Fire Department vehicles, except during training or returning from an emergency, until they successfully complete the Emergency Vehicle Driving Program.

7.

All protective clothing and safety equipment will be issued to Recruit Firefighters.

8.

Uniforms will not be issued until successfully completing 6 months of the probation period.

9.

Recruit Firefighters will not use red lights or sirens on their personal vehicles until they successfully complete the Volunteer Firefighter course, successfully complete the Firefighter Training Manual, and approved by the Fire Chief. Personal vehicles being used for emergency response shall pass a safety inspection. Driver’s license checks and proof of insurance will be completed annually to verify compliance with the State of Ohio and Bryan Fire Department policies.

At the completion of your 12-month probationary period, your progress will be reviewed by the Fire Chief and if successful, a recommendation to the Mayor and City Council will be made for you to be placed on regular status. You will still be required to complete the remaining portions of the Firefighter Training Manual and meet the remaining Requirements of the Bryan Fire Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following and any other duties that may be assigned: 1. Performing firefighting tasks (e.g. hoseline operations, extensive crawling, lifting carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing personal protective ensembles (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods. 2. Wearing and SCBA, which includes a demand valve-type positive pressure facepiece or HEPA filter mask, which requires the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads. 3. Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (infectious) and non-biological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of PPE including SCBA. 4. Climbing 4 or more flights of stairs while wearing fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 lb or more and carrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lb. 5. Wearing fire protective ensemble that is encapsulating and insulated. Wearing this clothing will result in significant fluid loss that frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature to levels exceeding 102.oF. 6. Searching, finding, and rescue-dragging or carrying victims ranging from newborns up to adults weighing over 200 lb to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility. Page 1 of 3

7. Advancing water-filled hoselines up to 2.5 in. in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy (approximately 150 ft); can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles. 8. Climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards. 9. Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration. 10. Operating fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens. 11. Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments (including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces), further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions. 12. Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing PPE and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hoselines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers). 13. Functioning as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mission failure or in risk of injury or death to civilians or other team members. In addition to general firefighting duties, firefighters will be required to respond and mitigate Hazardous Materials events, perform Technical Rescues, render first-aid, and support other emergency response departments. These tasks shall require members to wear or utilize specialized PPE that can increase weight, environmental isolation, sensory deprivation, and/or dehydration potential above levels experienced with standard fire suppression PPE. Performs any other task assigned by the Fire Chief.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: The Volunteer Firefighter shall have a High School Diploma or GED and a valid Ohio Motor Vehicle License. The volunteer firefighter must successfully complete the Firefighter Basic training course within twelve (12) months of employment. Additionally, the volunteer firefighter must successfully complete and obtain within 3 years of employment Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Operations and Technician courses, and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Applicant must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Must be able to write simple correspondence. And effectively present information to citizens, clients, and employees of the city. Reading material used during training academy and on the job will be at approximately grade 10 level or higher.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must have the ability to add and subtract two digits numbers and multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
