In 2004 Penguin Books launched the Great Ideas series, a collection of classic texts of philosophy and belle lettres packaged as pocket-sized paperbacks. Apart from the affordable price (originally £3.99 in the UK) the most striking aspect of the series was its design. Conceived by David Pearson, a recent graduate of Central Saint Martin’s in London, working with Penguin’s inhouse art director Jim Stoddart, the series’ design was hailed as ‘dazzling’ and ‘gorgeous’. The series came in five batches, each printed in black and a single spot colour, with blind debossing to suggest a letterpress process. The lettering and ornamentation reflected the era and spirit of each text. Great Ideas won numerous design awards, and sales were in the millions. Of its commercial appeal, Pearson says ‘I was once told that a member of the sales team pretended that his laptop was broken so he could get the proofs into the hands of booksellers (instead of via

Also, because the titles had been previously available in other incarnations we could very easily chart any new sparks in sales. In the case of George Orwell’s Why I Write, sales jumped from a couple of thousand copies to 200,000.’

Wanted: adventurous typography. If books were all written the same way, most readers would soon lose interest. Literature is about variety and discovery. Browsing books in a bookshop, be it on the high street or over the Internet, should be full of surprises – not the tedious repetition of ‘same old’ that it often is. Book covers that dared to be different have often been very successful. ← Two successful book covers from the last few years. Both became international standards, being adapted or imitated by publishers across the world for their translations of these books. The cover of Eat, Pray, Love (now a movie with Julia Roberts) was designed by American Helen Yentus. The materials show that the designer is familiar with book’s content: the food is Italian, the praying is done in India, the love is found among the flora of Bali. The background is the bathroom floor on which the main character finds herself sobbing at the beginning of the story. Book covers for Jonathan Safran Foer are almost invariably designed by Jonathan Grey (Grey 318), and are as cocky as Foer’s writing.

↑→ Once the basic concept of the Great Ideas series was in place, Pearson invited a group of colleagues to design individual covers. The Eliot cover is by Catherine Dixon; the Orwell cover is by Pearson. Among the other participating designers were Phil Baines and Alistair Hall.

And what was the source of the power that the religious orders were able to exercise in political affairs at various times? ALL ABOUT EVE

The Photography of Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold’s interest in photography started late with a photo-finishing job in New York City in 1946. Arnold is perhaps best known for her images of Marilyn Monroe. She has chronicled figures as diverse as migrant potato workers, heads of state, and screen icons. A blend of exacting technique and moral courage would typify her long career which never settled for clichés or stereotypes. Guided in her own words, this volume features Arnold’s iconic photographs as well as many never-before published images.
