Dear Parishioners of Padre Serra Parish, These last few weeks at the parish have been filled with fun, excitement and change! Three exciting events have now taken place! First, eighty-one candidates were confirmed in the faith, next we celebrated our love for our mothers on Mother’s Day, and then one hundred twenty-three children received their first Holy Communion. Last Saturday we celebrated Confirmation and I was blessed with the opportunity to be a Confirmation Sponsor. This opportunity was a little unique for me. I am a loyal volunteer to the teens, but have not been a sponsor in a while. When I was waiting with my lovely candidate to enter the church, I was overwhelmed with the love that our parish has for our young people, and how exciting a time it is for them to be starting off on a new journey, officially sealed now with the Holy Spirit. Sunday’s Mother’s Day celebration was another reminder of how precious our parents are to our faith development. Though I have not lived at home since entering college, I still remember my own mother telling me how important it is to love God. I even remember the nightly prayer we would say! God was so wise to give us parents to be our first teachers in our Catholic faith and especially how to be like Jesus in everyday situations. We learn we are loved and how to love through our parents. This Sunday we have young members of our parish family growing deeper in relationship with Jesus in first Holy Communion. I remember my first Holy Communion like it was yesterday, the excitement of dressing up and the preparation to receive Jesus fully in the Eucharist. This is one of the greatest gifts Christ gave to us and there is nothing that reaffirms my faith, like watching faithful children join our communion table. With all these new experiences, even more are coming! The school year is ending. Seniors are graduating from high school. College students are graduating and starting careers. Children get another year older. There is change in the air, and sometimes all of these changes can be overwhelming, stressful and make us a little tense. Today’s gospel reading is truly a timely gift from God. In the gospel Jesus says “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me.” Jesus is telling his disciples just what we need to hear. To not let our hearts get troubled, but to have faith in Him. It is not always easy to remember to have faith in Jesus when life piles on its many challenges. In times of struggle we must remember that we have a God that will never abandon us, and all we have to do is remember He is there, no matter what. So, today I pray you feel God’s love ever more present in your life. Congratulations to our First Communion friends and to the newly Confirmed! May your example of great faith bring us all in closer communion with Jesus! Siempre Adelante,

Britney McCarthy We welcome Britney McCarthy to our parish staff! Britney has been an active volunteer at the parish for the past five years working with high school and junior high youth. This year, Britney worked side by side with Mrs. Anita Green in our middle school ministry. Miss Britney will be our new leader in ministry to middle school youth assisted by Mr. Mike Ramirez, volunteer extraordinaire. Mrs. Green will be taking a rest after working with our junior high kids for more than ten years. God bless Anita, Britney and Mike!!
