PA Engage Fall 2015

2015-16 Community Engagement Student Coordinators

We had a very busy term, from chop-a-thons at the Pine Street Inn to building a social media platform to hundreds of students engaging with everyone from newborns to the elderly members of the community- and even animals! Read our newsletter to see what we have been up to this term.

Fall Term in Review

This year our office took on a new name- find out about the thought process behind this change.

We asked our coordinators to share with us one of the many highlights from their program this term…hear what they had to say! Page 3

Name Change: Introducing the Office of Community Engagement We are excited to announce that, with the support of the Senior Administrative Council, our office has a new name - the Office of Community Engagement. With this new name, we want to emphasize to students that involvement in our programs is a way to “engage with” instead of provide “service to” our community partners. By approaching our work as engagement with partners, students have the opportunity to see the relationship with them as a reciprocal one in which both groups learn from each other and bring knowledge, skills, and resources to our joint efforts to effect change. The term “engagement” also invokes active and thoughtful participation, as we engage our minds, hearts, and hands to collaborate with our partners and address communityidentified needs. We hope that a deliberate shift in language, along with programming throughout the year that highlights this type of relationship with community partners, affect the way students perceive communities and their roles in them, even after they have left Andover.

Find us on social media! Stay up to speed with all that goes on in our office by following us on social media. We will post photos and videos from our programs as well as news about special events we are hosting or participating in on campus. Tune in!

Coordinators Volunteer at the Pine St Inn September 2015 As part of the Community Engagement Student Coordinator Orientation we took a trip into Boston to volunteer at the Pine Street Inn. At the shelter students helped shuck and chop 1,000 ears of corn, donated by the office, for the Pine Street Inn’s Labor Day Picnic. It’s amazing how many hands make quick work- we finished the food prep in under an hour. This left time for the students to speak with a program director at the shelter and learn about how the shelter operates 365 days of the year. Every day, the Pine Street Inn serves more than 1,600 individuals struggling with homelessness and around 9,000 individuals annually. We look forward to returning to volunteer at the shelter during Non Sibi Weekend. To find out more about The Pine Street Inn visit: pinestreetinn.org.

Program Highlights from the Coordinators This year we have 24 student coordinators, leading 16 of our 32 different programs and many also participate in programs outside of their own. We asked the coordinators to share with the community a highlight from their program this term, and here are some of their responses. Maddie Comer: ARC ARC  had  a  great  start  to  the  year!  Our  buddy  pairings  spent   each  Tuesday  night  playing  games,  drawing  pictures,   listening  to  awesome  music,  and  catching  up  on  each  other’s   lives.  We  finished  off  a  great  term  with  an  awesome   Halloween  parade,  with  buddies  and  PA  volunteers  in   costume!

; PA Community Engagement Gracie Limoncelli: Jumpstart For me, Jumpstart is an opportunity to engage with preschoolers and PA students alike in activities meant to develop creativity, open-

mindedness, and empathy. Seeing the children eagerly participate in the books is the 2nd best part of my week. The best, without a doubt, is seeing them smile.

Fall 2015 Nupur Neogi: YDO Destination Imagination In YDO Destination Imagination this term, we focused on building teamwork and creativity skills through Instant Challenges and team games. My favorite part was seeing how much progress the kids have made from the first day by working together and using their problem solving skills and creativity to brainstorm solutions. I am looking forward to preparing for the Destination Imagination competition this winter.

Charlotte Standefer: YDO Comics Jair Suzazo: Project VOICE/ESL Everyone in Project VOICE/ESL has become comfortable with each other. There are great friendships being built between volunteers and participants. This has really allowed us all to learn from each other better than we were able to the first two weeks!

Olivia Michaels: YDO Art I love when the students from Lawrence talk about the pieces we view at the Addison Gallery of American Art–I always walk away with a new perspective on what we looked at, and their responses are so creative! At the end of the program every Wednesday, it makes me happy when the students ask if they can stay longer. This means they really enjoyed our lesson that day and that they were happy and having fun, which are my two biggest goals every week.

I think the best thing about my program is how the kids have really taken charge of their comic books. They all exude this insane creativity which they express in what they're making. I don't even know how they come up with the stuff they're working on.

Arzu Singh: YDO Math Getting to know the students we work with is hands down my favorite part of YDO Math. I get the opportunity to learn not only about their individual math skills, but also about their unique, funny, sweet individual personalities. Talking to them about their “goods” and “bads” of the week its just as fun as watching them master long division.

COMMUNITY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

BOB LANZONI

Executive Director of Bread and Roses Soup Kitchen When you walk into Bread and Roses, you will most likely see Bob Lanzoni sitting at a table out in the dining room talking with members of the community and fellow staff members. He has never been one to sit behind a desk; he likes to work amidst the hustle and bustle that goes on at the soup kitchen five days a week. It is this attitude, engaging with every single person that walks through the doors of Bread and Roses that has caused Mr. Lanzoni to be such a cherished member of the Lawrence community. When Bread and Roses was founded in 1980, Mr. Lazoni was there washing dishes and helping behind the scenes. He gradually moved up in leadership at the soup kitchen and in 2000 took on the role of Executive Director. One of Mr. Lanzoni’s reigning philosophies that he shares with all of our students who volunteer at Bread and Roses is that the soup kitchen is a place where every person who walks through the doors is treated with empathy and respect, that the job of the soup kitchen is a “place to serve hearts and souls”. This year Mr. Lanzoni is retiring, but people who have had the pleasure to work with Mr. Lanzoni know that he will still be a prominent face at Bread and Roses and within the Lawrence community. Thank you Mr. Lanzoni for the great legacy you will leave behind and being an inspirational teacher to many Phillips Academy students, faculty, and staff.
