Overweight and obesity defined: “Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health… …usually the result of an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended.” Michigan’s obesity crisis: Michigan is ranked as the 5th fattest state in 2012 (31% of adults are obese) If current trends continue, 50-60% of adults will be obese by 2030
Michigan’s Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan 4
Goal: Every Michigander will adopt health as a personal core value; the 4 x 4 tool can be used to maintain and/or attain health 4x4 Behaviors and Measures:
Maintain a healthy diet Engage in regular exercise Get annual physical exam Avoid tobacco use
Body Mass Index (BMI) Blood pressure Cholesterol level Blood sugar level
Statewide media campaign being developed.
Washtenaw County HIP and HIP Data 5
HIP is a countywide community assessment and planning collaborative. Purpose: to improve health in Washtenaw by facilitating partnerships, providing data, and developing strategies. 4 focus areas: healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco use reduction, & depression. HIP survey data on behavioral risk factors collected every 5 years.
