Update Management

Update procedures ServerView Update Manager offers various processes which enable the system components of PRIMERGY servers to be updated: ●

Online Update You can use this process for the initial installation of drivers and add-on products, as well as to update the BIOS, firmware and software components, drivers, ServerView agents and ServerView Update agents on multiple PRIMERGY servers simultaneously. It is controlled via a central management station.

Offline Update Not all components of the PRIMERGY servers can be updated online, in other words no Windows or Linux tools are available for this hardware. This is frequently the case with older Windows servers. These components are updated offline using DOS tools. In this case the Update Manager also controls the activation and deactivation of the DOS environment and performs the required reboots (switch to DOS, return to Windows or Linux). Two procedures are available for the offline update: – Update via the service partition of the server The updating of the PRIMERGY servers in the network is controlled from a central management station. When the operating system was installed, a DOS service partition was set up on the individual servers via ServerView Installation Manager /ServerStart, in which the actual update process is performed. – Update via a PXE server (Preboot eXecution Environment) The update of the PRIMERGY servers is controlled centrally by a management station in the network. A PXE server (normally one PXE server for all the servers that are to be updated) is assigned to the managed servers, and the servers then implement their PXE boot via this.

10

Update via TFTP Server This procedure is used to update PRIMERGY system components which cannot be updated using the update tools available under Windows, Linux or DOS either at all or only with great effort, or to update autonomous hardware systems on which none of these three operating systems runs. These system components and hardware systems are updated via a ServerView Update agent of the type TFTP Server.

Repository Manager

With the Update Manager you compile update jobs and access the update data from the update repository. Repository Manager allows you to administer the update repository located on the management station.

I For reasons of compatibility, the update repository (except for the

PrimSupportPack-Win) is also still contained in the Firmware directory on the ServerView Suite DVD 1 for Windows.

On startup, the main window is displayed showing the current contents of the update repository. Here you can perform the following functions: – Display updates, including all available updates, new updates and all recommended updates. – Release checked updates for selected servers. – Import the update repository from the ServerView Suite DVD 1. – Create and manage user-specific update groups.

Download Manager

The Download Manager provides you with a convenient way of receiving the latest versions of firmware, BIOS, drivers, and ServerView agents for your server. The Download Manager relieves you of the task of performing timeconsuming searches for suitable update information. Information and update files are provided on the Fujitsu Technology Solutions Web server for your server update. The Download Manager first loads the information files to a download directory. The data in these information files provides the Download Manager and the other components of the ServerView Suite with an overview of the available updates. When you start the Download Manager the following main window is displayed:

ServerView Update Management

You define via a graphical user interface when and how often download tasks are to be performed for specific servers. The necessary data is then automatically stored in the update repository you have specified on the central management station. Access to update data For the PRIMERGY servers to be updated, the relevant update data must be available in an update repository which ServerView Update Manager can access. This update repository is located in two places: 1. In the download area of the Fujitsu Technology Solutions Web server. From this area you download the data either with the Download Manager (automatic download) or via manual download into a directory on the central management station which will be accessed during the update. 2. In the Firmware directory on the ServerView Suite DVD 1, a new version of which comes out every two months. During the update, this DVD can be accessed directly, so it is not necessary to copy the data onto the central management station.
