BOGONG TO HOTHAM Oh So Close!

A

fter the disappointment of the weather cancellation in 2015, this year’s Rooftop Run was blessed with near perfect weather conditions. While temps in Mount Beauty climbed into the 30s, runners up on the high plains were greeted by a stiff breeze that cooled them off and kept the flies away. (It’s the Australian bush). After the gruelling climb to the summit of Mt Bogong, runners plummeted down to Big River to cool off before climbing again up the back of Mt Nelse to the aid station at Langford Gap. First runner through the halfway point was Stu Gibson on record pace. Stu has chased the 20 year old record for the last three years, missing it by just three minutes in 2014. Well back, but chasing Stu, the main field filed through Langford Gap in quick succession. In fifth place at this stage, lead woman, Lucy Bartholomew looked like she was out for her morning jog. Crossing the high plains, Stu held his comfortable lead and it became a race against the clock. The final climb up

Swindlers Spur pushed him to the limits and his five minute buffer on the record gradually waned. A small bunch of dedicated supporters cheered hard as Stu emerged past the Mt Loch carpark and hit the Alpine Way for the final climb to the summit of Mt Hotham. But alas, despite giving it all he had and setting a new personal best by one minute, Gibson touched the Summit Cairn two minutes short of the 1996 race record in a time of 6:43:43. It was over an hour before the next runner rounded the pole line leading to the summit. Defying all probabilities, in outright second place was the unassuming figure of Lucy Bartholomew. At just 19 years of age and on her first foray from Bogong to Hotham, Lucy’s casual and comfortable style belied the tough journey across the mountains. Even more remarkable was Lucy’s winning time of 7:48:42, smashing the previous course record by 17 minutes and the first woman in the 30 year history of the race to go under 8 hours. This was a truly inspiring and remarkable run. With a special link to the origins of the race, the 35km race was won by Ben Derrick,

nephew of Charles Derrick. Charles Derrick perished in a blizzard while attempting to ski from Mt Bogong to Mt Hotham in 1965. Derrick Hut is a memorial for Charles, and the race now follows the same course that he did back in 1965. Female winner of the 35km race was Lisa Wilkinson in 6:04:04. The minor placings of the 64km men’s race were filled by Dan Thompson in 7:54 and Tom Burford in 8:02. In the women’s race, stalwart Kathy Macmillan was second in 9:35 and Sarah Fien third in 9:42. Once again Parks Victoria presented the track in excellent condition with last minute tree clearing being greatly appreciated by the runners. The Albury-Wodonga Amateur Radio Club once again kept track of all the runners across the course. Defying the lowkey, no-frills style of the race, all runners benefited this year from having a naming right sponsor in Hoka One One. Runners and supporters enjoyed their time in Mount Beauty with many already keen to come back next summer. • Andy Hewat

AUSTRALIA DAY It Means A Lot

G

rowing up in a rural city, it was nice to see the obvious respect that people had for each other - in business - in the street - in general. And the key to that respect for each other - is self-respect. Self-respect and personal pride go together and become the basis for living successfully. It is not about how much money you have or whether you think you are better than someone else - because the truth is that we are all equal and money will not make anyone a better person. And then there is the pride we exhibit as a nation. To my mind the greatest example of National Pride would be a perfectly functioning education system, a health system for all and no homelessness. Like it or not, Australia has a National Flag and there are protocols relating to the flag and how it is handled. 1. Show respect and dignity for all Australian flags. The Australian National flag takes precedence in positioning over all other flags or ensigns. On Australian soil, the Australian National flag takes precedence over other national flags. 2. Fly the flag. The following must be observed when flying the Australian National flag: • Raise it no earlier than first light. • Lower it no later than dusk. • If you wish to fly the Australian National flag by night, it must be floodlit.

3. Raise the flag quickly and lower it ceremoniously. During the raising and lowering of the Australian National flag, everyone present must be silent and face the flag. This also applies to when the flag is carried in a parade. Those in uniform are obliged to salute the flag. Another important point is that you should never let the National Flag touch the ground, the water, or the floor. The Australian National Flag consists of: The Union Jack - this depicts Australia’s past links with Great Britain. The Southern Cross - Five stars that emphasise the importance of navigation to Australia and the southerly location of Australia geographically. The Southern Cross constellation is only viewable from the southern hemisphere. The Commonwealth Star - also known as the Star of Federation - this shows the unity of the six States and the combined Territories of this country. There are many varied points of view - but the fact is, it is our flag and comes to us with a history - from a continent where flags were used for many centuries prior. We treat our flag with respect - the same as we treat each other with respect. Australia Day is our National Day and locally, our Australia Day celebrations begin at around 8am in the park beside the swimming pool with the Upper Kiewa Valley Lions putting on an excellent breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, orange juice, tea and coffee - all for a gold coin donation.

:Australia Day is about recognising those deserving folk of all ages who ‘put in’ for the community. Pic - Elle Shaw.

Our fabulous Mount Beauty Community Band has become firmly entrenched as part of our celebrations - and will continue to do so this year. Also on hand will be free flag wavers, face painting and temporary tattoos for the kids. The official part of the day begins at 9:30am with the presentation of Alpine Shire Australia Day Community Awards (Local Achiever of the Year - Kiewa Valley, Local Young Achiever of the Year - Kiewa Valley and other deserving recipients. MC for the day will be Yvonne Sutton, and council will be represented by Councillors Tony Keeble and Peter Roper. The guest speaker on the day is to be advised. •

FABULOUS MILE HIGH Dragon Boating

I

t was back in the early 2000’s when a couple of enterprising souls decided that Dragon Boating would be a good thing to do on Rocky Valley dam. They chased up several second hand boats, transported them to Falls Creek and with a little TLC, turned them into useable attractive Dragon Boats - and thus the Mile High Dragon Boat Championships were born. In those early days, many teams came from local businesses and the community, with stiff competition arriving from several other resorts - and the whole weekend was a great fun time. The weekend is still a great fun time - as the popularity of Dragon Boating has soared - and now teams are travelling from all over the state to take advantage of the clear air, the beautiful scenery and the friendly environment that is the Mile High

At the base of the walking and mountain biking trails!

Dragon Boat Championships. As well as several teams from Falls Creek, we also have the following entrants: Dragon Masters, Yarra River Dragons, Southern Storm, Gippsland Waratahs, Peninsula Dragonflys, Albury Wodonga Brave Hearts, Warriors Albury Wodonga and Bidgee Dragons Abreast from Wagga Wagga. What a fabulous line-up! While Dragon Boating has its origins in China a couple of thousand years back, a major reason for its resurgence is the health benefits among the community. Joining with a team of 20 like-minded individuals to develop fitness and to enjoy the teamwork, the social life and the fun has proven to be good for he mind the body and the soul. Doing all this at Falls Creek is even better. The excitement starts on Saturday, 23rd January between 1 - 3pm for training, tutoring and familiarisation with the water. Members of Dragon Boats Victoria will be on hand to instruct and support. The serious part, the racing, starts from 9am on Sunday, 24th January 2016. For guests this is a fantastic weekend to spend at Falls Creek. The grassy banks of Rocky Valley are a beautiful place to spend the day A fresh project in the Village Bowl

with the family and soak in the excitement of the races. On the foreshore there are also food and drinks available, plus on Sunday night the action continues with post-race dinners and parties throughout the village. Being a sport synonymous with Breast Cancer survivors, there is always a strong showing from the ‘Pink Ribbon’ teams each year. Community teams and the more serious outfits are also regular participants. The ‘no experience needed’ disclaimer of the event means all are welcome for the Mile High and Mountain Challenge categories. Individuals can join an existing team (even on the day) and all training and equipment is provided including boats, life jackets and paddles. If you’ve never tried Dragon Boat racing before then this is the perfect opportunity to get out to the high country and try something new. Visit www.fallscreek.com.au/dragonboats for further information and to sign up to participate. •

THE AUDAX ALPINE CLASSIC A Fabulous Event

B

ack in 2011, our valued reporter Kim McKeown supplied a piece on her then recent Audax experience which began like this: “Cycling is a dead sexy, glamorous affair I thought to myself. I was sitting at the Bright Brewery, red in the face, crusted in salt and snot, sporting fabulous helmet hair and a fine sprinkling of bug splatter on my limbs. The beer in front of me tasted so good - and I don’t even drink beer! I had just completed my fourth Audax Alpine Classic in my worst time ever - ten and a half hours in the saddle. I was hot, dehydrated, food flat, completely spent and somehow despite having been flogged on my final leg up Mt Buffalo, I felt strangely elated!” Exactly - elated; after flogging ones-self for 200km and Kim has entered again this year. The Audax Alpine Classic is now listed high in the top 100 things to put on the ‘Bucket List’ as is the forth-coming Peaks Challenge Falls Creek. While the entries are down a little for this year’s Audax Alpine Classic, the rides themselves have been varied and modified a bit to cater for traffic flow and riding conditions. Whereas riders doing the 200km event would leave Bright, travel over the Gap and up to Falls Creek before going back to Bright and then Buffalo, this year most riders will do Buffalo first and then come over the Gap and to Falls Creek. This will spread the riders and should reduce any complications with cyclists and traffic. Quite a few riders have nominated to do the 250km ride in two days, with an overnight in Omeo. As is indicated by notices elsewhere in this publication, there will be changed

Logically, any smart rider will put up on the top of the Tawonga Gap and take in the views over the Kiewa Valley to Mt. Bogong. Pic - Elle Shaw.

This is the good bit. You’ve made it to Falls - now it’s back down, over the gap and into Bright. Enjoy! Pic - Ken Bell.

traffic conditions on the roads around Bright, Mount Beauty, Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo, Mount Hotham and Omeo over the weekend. Sunday is the big day, and motorists should allow plenty of time to get to their destinations. Cycling in the area has proved to be a fabulous boon for the economy, not only with events, but also with many, many hundreds of people coming to the area to

ride and train and experience the pleasure of riding in the high country all through our summer period. Last year’s Peaks Challenge Falls Creek, which took place on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend, was capped at 2000 riders. The official figures show that 60% of the entrants came from interstate. Good for our economy. And the average age was 41 - good for our health. •

A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Family Oriented

N

orth East Country Wholesale Foods (purchased in 2005) and Kiewa Valley Food Services was bought by Darren and Heather Cootee in January 2007. The businesses were combined and have been ‘owner operated’ since that time in Mount Beauty, working from premises behind the Thrifty Link North East Home Improvement Co on the Kiewa Valley Highway in Mount Beauty. NECWF is now for sale as the Cootee family are returning to Melbourne once again for family reasons and to be closer to their extended families. The business delivers quality food and catering supplies to the surrounding area and operates Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm and is closed on weekends. The business prides itself on its service and willingness to source specific products that are requested by the customer. NECWF also has a freight component that compliments the business. NECWF has allowed Darren and Heather to live a lifestyle they desired, especially being able to live, work and contribute to a community they have grown to love. While owning ‘Jimmy Rowes Bar/Café’ in Melbourne, which incorporated live music in the evenings, Darren and Heather moved to Mount Beauty to raise their only child at the time, one year old Holly. After a couple of years, Billy arrived and they decided to purchase a business in the area where they could work around the needs of their children. Billy is now 13 years and Holly is 15years and their needs are the family priority.

The original business model needed to change to allow for this so the business has therefore evolved over the years. Having a couple of kids who have regularly participated in ‘out-of-school’ activities, especially sport, meant that because of these changes, Darren and Heather have rarely missed a game or event. Heather has also been able to work from home when required, especially in school holidays. The business has also allowed for annual family holidays. The community of Mount Beauty and Falls Creek in particular have continued to support this local business and have always been incredibly loyal which Heather and Darren continue to be grateful for. Until such time as a sale is finalised, Darren and Heather will continue to manage NECWF to ensure that their customer’s needs are being met. NECWF has room for expansion, growth and development. A new owner will have an opportunity to take the business and make it their own along with being able to live and work within this amazing valley and community.

T

his Valley, including the Bogong High Plains, was well researched by Dr. Ruth Lawrence during the late eighties. The research was for her thesis, which culminated in an unpublished document titled ‘The Interaction between the Land Use, the Environment and the Hydrology of the Bogong High Plains between 1850 and 1985.’ According to a note in the book: Length of Thesis, not counting tables, plates and indices, not more than 100,000 words. Our inimitable Bill Sutton worked for the SEC in the Information Centre during that period and was a great help to and supporter of Ruth’s work. As such, a copy of the Thesis was left in Bill’s care for the benefit of the community. Some time back it was lent out - and we don’t know who to. It’s a bit like that little adage: The biggest lie I tell myself is, “I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it!” Now we are asking if anyone can help. It is a large hard-bound volume, red in colour. If you can help, get it back to Bill in Valley Avenue, or ring your Ed on 0400 350 488. •

We Saw the Queen “We Saw The Queen” is a touring exhibition from the Public Records Office, Victoria to mark the Diamond Jubilee

of Queen Elizabeth II. Nine colourful panels highlight pictures and stories from the many visits the Queen has made to Victoria. Stories were also told from the general public, who saw the Queen on those tours. The ‘We Saw the Queen’ exhibition will be on display during January and February 2016 at the Museum in the Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre. Open seven days 9am- 5pm. Gold coin donation. Also a DVD tells stories of the general public and their brushes with royalty. Many of the stories and photos in “We Saw the Queen” came from the 1954 visit, which was the first time a reigning monarch had visited Australia. This event was of massive proportions, the like which we have not seen since. Kiewa Valley Historical Society has its own connections with ERII as Clair Roper, one of the founders of the society was invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and Curator Karen Wykes worked for a season at Buckingham Palace in 2008. KVHS will be hosting an afternoon tea on Sunday 31st January 2pm where people are invited to tell of when they saw the Queen. Karen will tell of her time at the Palace followed by a short DVD about the Queen. Please contact the VIC if you would like to come to this afternoon tea.

Temporary Closure Dear Mount Beauty Community, we are sorry to announce that the Mount Beauty Bodycraft Massage and Physiotherapy clinic will be temporarily closing at the end of January. Tim and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients for your support over the past six years. We have thoroughly enjoyed operating our business in Tawonga South, and we look forward to reopening our clinic again in the near future. This difficult decision was primarily made to enable Tim to complete his PhD in Physiotherapy through the University of Queensland. Until now, Tim has been balancing work at our Bodycraft clinic with working as a lecturer in Physiotherapy at Charles Sturt University, as well as studying for his PhD. We apologise for any inconvenience this may create, and plan to reopen our clinic as soon as possible. This paper will let you know as soon as we are re-opening. We wish you all a happy and healthy 2016. Thanks again; Tory Thomas and Tim Retchford. •

Ladies Day What a fabulous day it turned out to be. The Blue Dirt up-hill mountain bike shuttles at Falls Creek have proven to be a big hit - with the riders loving the service and the trails. But it was predominantly males doing the riding. A little note on social media went something like: “We would like to introduce the new mountain bike trail network to the local and regional female riders in a comfortable and relaxing way. (Ok, we’ll say it, women don’t want to ride with the men!!) Head up to Falls and start the day with a coffee before heading out to explore the

TEAM MOUNT BEAUTY NEWS Presidential Interview

A

s part of the continuing promotion and community involvement of our fabulous local cycling club, Team Mount Beauty, Charlie Brown this week presents an interview with Club President, Gerry van der Ploeg. CB: Gerry, how long have you been president of TMB? Gerry: Probably about a year, Haha, I was talked into being president and I have to say that I was quite reluctant at first but the more I’m involved the more I’m enjoying it. There’s a bunch of enthusiastic people in the club that are great to be involved with. CB: How long have you been involved with TMB? Gerry: Oh probably about 25 years. Back then I was riding road but only once in a blue moon, I was more into running and skiing, then about 23/25 years ago ‘Biking with Bernie’ started up, that was Bernie McArdle doing rides with kids, teaching them how to have fun on their bikes in the bush etc. Well, because we had a tribe of young boys, being, Dan, Evan, Mark, Neil and Paul, I thought, “yeah that might be fun to go to” and that started off the mountain biking for me. I bought myself

a mountain bike and as the kids got older we bought them more reasonable bikes, although they were still nothing flash, haha. Gradually, when Daniel was 11 or 12 he started going in kids competitions and then the other boys followed suit, so all of the boys, except Evan did a fair bit of racing when they were young. So that started the whole ball rolling. CB: Do you have a most memorable TMB moment? Gerry: One really memorable event was when Daniel was a sub junior. We had a nationals event at Mount Beauty and he was pretty fit. He’d got another bike (second hand) a few days before the event and he was leading at the end of the first lap and then he broke his chain. By the time he’d fixed it, the field were well gone but he still rode the fastest lap of the day. It was one of those moments that, well it just devastated me at the time because here he was with a really good chance to win a title and then it was all down the gurgler because of a broken chain, haha, it was a pretty memorable day. Another pretty memorable time was when I was in my 50’s. They’d just opened up an over 50’s category and for a couple of seasons I found that I could go like a cut cat up hill, haha. I wasn’t too good on the downhill but I was good enough to win a few races and the money was pretty good back then too, so that was a pretty memorable time.

Another memory was sneaking into the shower after a ride to wash the blood off because I’d always fall off, I wasn’t too happy about falling off but it always seemed to happen! CB: What’s your favourite local trail? Gerry: I probably favour the more intermediate trails, Our new ‘yellow loop’ is a fav, I just love ‘El Presidente’ and ‘Ooh LaLa’ - they’re great runs. The run from the cattle-yards, back down on the old six hour course is a real hoot; it’s got plenty of corners and berms; they’re the sort of trails I really enjoy, stuff like Greg and Burnie’s ‘Dragons tail’ don’t really turn me on. CB: What’s your favourite destination for a ride? Gerry: It varies a bit, a few years ago someone suggested we got to Tathra, so we went and we’ve been back three years running, mainly because they’re more intermediate trails, they flow and they’re a lot of fun, you can ride fast without being in serious danger. So that type of trail is what I really like, anybody can ride them, Jenny can ride them and I can ride them, we just go at different speeds. CB: Where do you see TMB going? Gerry: We’ve got a number of projects in the pipeline, To me one of the big things is the junior programs that have been running for a couple of years. The aim is to get kids on bikes and enjoying themselves. Trying to develop them to a better skill level and maybe eventually some of them might take up racing but that’s not the main aim, it’s more about seeing kids having fun. We’ve been having regular instructions through the week and we’ve started going to different places to ride. We went to Beechworth before Xmas and we had a ball there. We had parents come along and that’s really the key, getting parents involved and every now and then go

TEAM MOUNT BEAUTY NEWS somewhere different and have fun. The plan is for the rest of the summer to do some more instruction and then we’ll have a session with the parents and kids in Bright on a Saturday morning and we’ll have another one in Falls Creek to ride those trails as well. Before Xmas we had an eliminator for the kids which proved really successful, so we might slot a few more of those in as well. They’re a kids’ race but a bit novel and the emphasis isn’t on winning but just to participate. We also want to continue on what we’ve been doing with the signage in the park and the maps of the trails and the trail head map in the carpark are almost finished and we’ve been working on trail loops. The good thing about maps and loops is when people come to town that haven’t ridden in the park before can ride one of the marked loops which makes it easier to orientate themselves for future rides. We’ve been working on developing a kids and beginners loop, which is really important, it means that beginner and intermediate people can come here and ride in the park without being intimidated, that’s pretty important. Another thing that’s proven really popular is women clinics. One was held up at Falls Creek recently and had 75 women attend and we’ve had a few here as well and they are always well received so we’ll be building on them.

There are four fairly big events in the park each year: The Big Hill Downhill, the Rambo, the Gravity Downhill and the State round Downhill - so we’ll continue to work on them and then there’s always the trail upkeep, which, by the way, is all done by volunteers. CB: Thanks Gerry and lastly what are your plans? Gerry: Haha, to still be riding in 20 years •

OUR SWEET VALLEY Our Fab Community

O

ne does not have to live in this valley for long to understand that we are surrounded by a wonderful community. There are many examples of this - and one is the annual celebration of community - our ‘Sweet Valley Sounds’ festival and the team that put it all together. Now just two weeks away, our 5th annual Sweet Valley Sounds Music Festival will take place on Saturday 6th February at the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. The day starts around 11:30am and will go through until 10pm. Ticket sales have been overwhelmingly positive in the lead-up as the event has grown steadily over the last few years and is proving to be a great success. Live music, performance art, great local food vendors, local craft beer, wine and cider, market stalls and plenty of kids’ activities will all be on offer at the Park. It certainly makes for a great day out with family and friends, roll out a picnic rug in the shade on the hill, bring along an Esky full of goodies (BYO food and alcohol is welcome), kick back and zone into an afternoon of brilliant, live entertainment.

Dallas Frasca is back. Pic – Courtesy the Artist.

…and the crowds just love it! Pic Charlie Brown.

The featured artists on this year’s bill are of a very high calibre. With music plucked from genres such as blues, rock, folk, country, jazz, Latino, soul and roots, there’s bound to be something for everyone! We’re very pleased to have Dallas Frasca back again; Caravana Sun; Kings BLVD; The Lyrical (Karl Smith); Mitch King; our very own Spooky Ukees and more to be announced. Check out www.sweetvalleysounds.com.au for a full wrap and bio on the artists - but trust me - it’s looking good!! The team really enjoy putting on this event for the locals, with their motto saying it all - “A Celebration of Valley Life, It’s All For

You!” It therefore is great to see the local townsfolk and their kids mingling together and warmly welcoming the visitors to town for the weekend. This 5th edition is going to be a good one, don’t miss your chance to be part of it all! Tickets are strictly limited to 1000 only and with the line-up listed above, they are surely bound to sell out. Full ticket info is also available on the website, or refer advert in this paper. While checking the website, please take to time to visit the sponsors’ page. SVS simply could not and would not happen without the support and contribution from these good folk. Please support them; they have been extremely generous to the festival. •
