Talents & Gifts – Reflection by Barry Brandy 10

First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry.

Name badges help make St Paul’s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form inside the pew sheet, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you.

Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church.

Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who’s wearing a name badge. We’re here to help.

People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul’s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower.

Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It’ll save you much embarrassment later on.

Children are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children’s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids’ activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children’s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament.

As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should Please do not take photos there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, inside the church or during the services and assemble by the roundabout on of worship without permission. Burwood Road.

Today is the last Sunday in the current Church year and is traditionally known as The Sunday next before Advent but in more recent years Anglicans have "borrowed" the title of Christ the King for this Sunday from the Roman Catholic as it now appears in modern lectionaries (Kalendars). It gives the Church an opportunity to acknowledge the Sovereignty of our Blessed Lord as King of Kings hence the title of the Feast of Christ the Eternal King. Today we honour Christ as the eternal king of the universe and offer Him our praise and thanksgiving in a wonderful act of worship with all its splendour and glory. We pause in humility and bow down before Him in obedience and with our heartfelt thanksgiving. Today, Fr Michael is at Christ Church S. Laurence as guest preacher at the Parish Mass and also High Mass as they celebrate their Feast of Title as the Parish Church is dedicated to Christ (S. Laurence being the civil parish) as their patron - we send their Rector, Fr Dries, their priests and people, our prayerful best wishes on their Patronal Festival and assure them of our fellowship and love as coworkers in the mission of the Church.

The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” – Luke 23.36-38 An unrecognizable Ruler, this one, whose power is hidden in defeat, who lives in the Land of Not-Oneself, who knows the secret kingdom of grace and its magical powers. We didn't expect this kind of Mighty One, who walks through the machine of this death and emerges, new and invisibly victorious, without army or court or political victory, whose throne is powerlessness, whose palace is human suffering, whose power is not domination but to draw us into resurrection. We still don't quite get it, chastened by our losses, fearful of our destitution, that this is the greater power, Not-Ours, from the beyond within, given, not seized, not even held, not standing over us but flowing through us; that forgiveness is victory, that giving life is life, that love is actually immortal; that even in this rough world we are loved from beneath to be of a different kind. On our knees, stripped of our powers, empty handed, we awaken to this vast might, to our royalty, and our waiting subjects.

This morning we welcome Elise Natalie Sherer, Michael Page, Marcus Gard, Zainab Tahmasbi Barjoee and Zhi Xing Zhang into the family of God, the Church, through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Pray for Elise, Michael, Marcus, Zainab and Zhi (Justin), their godparents and parents that they may know God’s presence in their lives and be enfolded with God’s love.

Dear Ria and David, It was a delight to see you both on Tuesday and to hear your superb singing and playing. Thank you for the exceptionally fine way that you handled the repertoire. Your recital allowed those who were listening to enter into a beautiful realm of reflection and deep and sustained contemplation of beauty and goodness. I am most grateful to you both for giving so much of yourselves in today's recital. Thank you, Sheryl, for having organized Tuesday’s recital and all the recitals through the year. I am looking forward to next year's recital series. Thank you, Jane & Bob, for yet another magnificent offering for our post-recital refreshments. I am particularly grateful to you for today's effort given that John has just had to be re-admitted to hospital. Please let your father know that he is my prayers, Jane. Thank you. We are truly blessed to be able to share such beauty and goodness. Thanks be to God. With my love and thanks. Peace, James.

The Flowers in the Church today are in memory of Ria Andriani and David Drury designed a beautiful programme of meditative music. We were wooed and comforted, enjoying time for reflection with beautiful sounds from voice and organ. Louis Vierne's spiritual, elegant, yet not sentimental 'Au matin' (In the Morning) and 'Au soir' (In the Evening) were sung and Fondly remembered with deep accompanied with gentleness and affection by his wife Moya. subtlety. David's choice of the bourdon stop provided a warm and  embracing tone, supporting Ria's clear and lyrical timbre. Faure's 'Ave Maria', and the first three movements of 'Missa Puerorum' by Rheinberger were followed by David's colourful and triumphant improvisation. The remaining Mass movements, the well known 'Bist du bei mir' of Bach, and finally, Purcell's 'Evening Hymn' sustained the recital's serene atmosphere. I am sure Ria and David understood how appreciative we all were, a treat for everyone. Thank you, to you, our audience, for your continued support of Music at St Paul's. My thanks to Fr James, Rosemary King, Jane and Bob Woods, Margaret Whittaker, Vanessa, Annette and Caroline Badra for their contribution to another successful afternoon. Sheryl Southwood Director of Music

Recently we introduced a sung Lord’s Prayer to the 9.30 Choral Eucharist. Some might be wondering why, but are too polite to ask. Apart from the well-known quote ‘Those who sing, pray twice’, attributed to either St Augustine or Martin Luther, it is probably true to say that that music lends wings to words, helping them to soar. Music also has a way of colouring the words, making them more vivid and memorable. The Lord’s Prayer is the most powerful prayer in the world but by its very familiarity can sometimes become routine and automatic. Music is the great uplifter of the soul, a gift from heaven. May our singing of this prayer elevate it to a new level as we lift up our hearts to the Lord. – Fr Michael

A pipe organ is literally a wind instrument. Air has to be blown into the pipes by a very complex process when the keys are pressed. The source of this wind power is in the blower. Many years ago the blower would be a human being who used a hand pump while the organist played. Some of these hand pumps can still be seen attached to historical organs around Sydney. Organ blowers are now electrified machines that last a very long time, but not forever. The blower at St Paul’s was reaching the end of its life-span. Fortunately, by the kind generosity of a benefactor, a new organ blower has arrived from Germany, which is larger, more powerful, much quieter and will probably outlast us all. It is hidden away in a large box in the priests’ vestry. Although it takes up extra floor space it does provide extra shelf space. – Fr Michael

If you have a piano that you would like to rehome, please speak to Rosemary.

We will once again have Advent Activity Packs available for our children on the first Sunday in Advent Sunday, If you would like to help us with these we are looking for the following materials: Christmas wrapping paper, old Christmas cards with religious themes, small white paper plates, gold and silver ribbon, glitter, Christmas stickers. Thank you for supporting us in preparing these. If you are going to do this with your own children please put aside a shoe box and some toilet roll inners to use as we will not be providing them this year.

The tickets are now on sale for the Christmas raffle. The main prize will be a wonderful Christmas hamper. Could we have donations of Christmas fair to fill it with? Suggestions - plum puddings, biscuits, canned fruit, Cranberry sauce, Christmas decorations, smoked oysters, serviettes, anything you might like to use at Christmas. The tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5. Please place these in the washing basket which will be at the back of the church at each service or give to Pam or leave at the Church Office and mark for Christmas Hamper.

We have had another cushion completed for the Chapel of our Lady. It will not be long before all 6 are in place. Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God or in memory of someone or to dedicate one to someone? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can ask someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary.

Thank you to Judith Laurence for her time and effort in organising the Christmas greeting cards. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to those of you who make such very generous donations to the Parish Pantry each week but as Fr James tells us the need keeps growing. Currently the urgent need is for coffee & Up & Go. If you are able to contribute any of the above items it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Foods always needed are: Tinned ham, spam, corned beef, cereal, Up and Go. tins of chunky soups, pasta, tins of tuna, spreads and sweet and savoury biscuits. With the hot weather we have run out of juice. If you can please bring “poppers” of drink/juice.

Australia Post has issued this year's Religious Christmas Stamp for Cards sent within Australia - 65 cents (The stamp shows S. Mary tenderly cradling the Infant Christ in her arms). There are 2 other Religious Stamps for overseas mail available. When buying your stamps ask for the Religious 65c stamp (or overseas stamps) and help keep the real meaning of Christmas alive. (some smaller Post Offices are pretending they have not seen them and try to give you secular stamps!!!)

Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our Services. In James 5: 14-15 we read: 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV) If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed for then please ask one of the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anointed during any of our Services. The Wednesday mid-week Eucharist includes prayers for healing every week.

There are many people whose gifts for one reason or another lie dormant. They are not fulfilling the purpose for which they were created. So often when their lives are touched by Jesus they come alive. They discovered talents they didn’t realise they had. The first disciples were very ordinary men – they were afraid, disillusioned, and defeated. But when Jesus made himself known to them, they became changed men – fear and doubt overcome. They spoke with boldness of Jesus and those who heard them, saw the radiance of their faces and believed. They too were filled with new life. May God bless us and help us to discover our talents, and use them together with our gifts to the glory of His name. Barry Brandy 14 November 2016

If everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Parish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every person rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Why not give it a go? The bank details are: Account name: St Pauls Anglican Church BSB number: 032 062 Account number: 250028 Reference: e.g. offertory, kneelers, parish pantry, choir, organ, church building, etc..

Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $............ to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul’s, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish."

Collection given at St Paul’s on Sunday 13th of November: $1555 Other collection given: – St Matthew Zabbabdeh: $100 – Parish Pantry - $95 TOTAL: $1750

Thank you for responding to God’s generous love.

The Feast of Christ the King – 

Jeremiah 23.1-6; Song of Zechariah or Psalm 46; Colossians 1.11-20; Luke 23.33-43

God’s Messiah was crucified by the Romans incited by his enemies and was placed alongside two criminals, but Jesus still prayed to his Father that they all might be forgiven. This Christ Jesus, the creator of all things, this ruler of all dominions and powers, our head of the church, is the LORD our righteousness. By his death and resurrection, this good shepherd is gathering all the lost and scattered sheep to himself. All of us, whether we are alienated, poor, downcast, living in darkness, living in hopelessness or despair – we are all welcome in God’s family. 

Pray that Christ the king may reign in our lives as we seek to forgive, love and reconcile all things on behalf of our loving God. Give thanks for the work of the Church Agencies’ Network – made up of those agencies which are both development agencies of Christian Church denominations in Australia (or of the National Council of Churches in Australia) and members of the Australian Council for International Development, ACFID.
