Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 22, 2015 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here.” John 18:36

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, the last Sunday in Ordinary Time of the liturgical year, as we prepare to observe the national day of Thanksgiving on Thursday. Collection for week of Nov. 14/15, 2015 Weekly Collection

$16,817

$18,700 New Avg. Wkly Needed $17,470 Actual Avg. Income ($14,604) YTD Over/(Under) Includes $3,394 E-Giving, 20% Participation Total Debt to Archdiocese: $1,909,175 (As of 9/30/15) Mortgage and past due assessments

In April we announced the need to increase our offertory income to an average of $18,200 per week. We asked that each family consider increasing their offertory donation by 12%. Since that time we are averaging $17,470 per week The offertory income increase is necessary because of rising operating expenses In addition, we identified several unbudgeted projects, for example, the replacement of the church sidewalks. The tabulation above shows a ‘New Average Weekly Needed’ to offset the Year to Date shortfall. Many of you have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to better meet our needs If you have not increased your offertory donation, please consider doing so. Be as generous as you can. Finally, we are grateful to those who have switched your contributions to electronic fund transfer (EFT). EFT is an advantage to the Parish since contributions would continue when you are away for the weekend.

The 2016 Parish Appeal to address a shortfall of $100,000 in our budget for the Parish this fiscal year is off to an excellent start. To date we have raised more than $35,000 toward our goal of $100,000. For a more detailed report of the status of the 2016 Parish Appeal please refer to the article on page 9.

The solemnity teaches us that we do, indeed, have much for which to be thankful. If these waning days of the liturgical year reveal anything, they reveal that all the joys and pains of this life will quickly pass. We are heading towards a glorious day when God will be all in all; joy will be intensified, and pain will disappear. The Scripture readings today focus on the return of Christ, which will be seen by everyone: “As the vision of the night continued, I saw one like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven” (from the Book of the Prophet Daniel); “Behold, he is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him” (from the Book of Revelation). The expectation for the return of Christ makes us thankful, for we know that the triumph of evil is always short lived. In the end, God’s justice will prevail, and victory will belong to the just. At the end of time there will be a general day of judgment. Jesus remarks in the Gospel that “of that day or hour, no one knows.” We might as well not even try to guess! The failure rate so far of those who have tried is 100%. A cashier in the grocery store recently said to me, noticing my clerical collar, that the Lord is coming back soon. I smiled and said that no matter what, we need to be ready to meet him at any moment. He agreed, adding that, after all, the apostles said 2,000 years ago that his return was near (see Philippians 4:5; Hebrews 10:37; James 5:8, etc.). The Second Letter of St. Peter clarifies what the apostles meant: “But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief…” (2 Pet 3:8-10). Christ does not dither, he does not procrastinate, rather, he delays his return in order to allow more people to come to repentance and be saved. The reality for each one of us is that either Jesus will return in glory during our lifetime, or at the end of our days we will go to him. Whatever happens, from the perspective of eternity, this momentous meeting will not be long in coming. Therefore, it is best to walk always in the grace of Christ. This is what Jesus recommended: “You also must be ready, because the Son of man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” (Luke 12:40). To be ready at every moment is good advice in the gracious task of saving our souls, which is the most important task God has assigned to every human being. Such readiness will be a reason for joy, not fear, for we will make good use of the time God has given us. By His grace we will look forward to giving a good account of our life. It will not have been lost in selfish pursuits but will have been meaningful and helpful to others. Walking daily with Christ, we can look forward with hopeful anticipation towards a joyful encounter with the One who said: “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes” (Luke 12:37). In Christ,

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Reflection November 22, 2015

As the Lord told Pilate, "my kingdom does not belong to this world." His kingdom is not established in a particular place or even in a particular time. Rather, the realm of the King of the universe encompasses all the other kingdoms of the world. And everyone is invited to be the privileged subject of this King. The key to entering this kingdom, as Jesus says, is to listen to his voice. Heeding the voice of Jesus enables us to belong to this kingdom that is founded upon truth. Jesus defines his authority in these terms: "For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth." As Christians, we profess to follow the King of kings. Therefore, as members of his royal realm, we too should be about the business of testifying to the truth: that Jesus is in fact Godmade-man and that, through his death and resurrection, he has saved us from our sins. This Gospel message, both simple and profound, is a truth that never grows old. Let us boldly profess the truth of the Gospel as we invite all those we encounter to join in the joy of the kingdom of Jesus. John 18:33b-37: How do Jesus’ responses to Pilate help define his role as king and lord of the universe? Daniel 7:13-14: Why do you suppose God spoke through visions in the ancient world? Revelation 1:5-8: Of the numerous titles for Christ in this reading, which do you find most appealing?

CANNED FOOD DRIVE Depending on your point of view, this Fall has been a blessing or a curse. The weather has been uncharacteristically warm, an Indian Summer and those who love the brisk days of Fall, anticipating the snow of winter have not been very happy. Then there are those of us who enjoy the warm weather so we can play with our children outside or do yard work without “bundling up”. But there are many in our community who are even more thankful for every warm day they can steal from Fall. They are the needy and less fortunate who have a tough time making ends meet and can use their heating bill money to purchase food for their family. Needless to say this weather will not last for much longer and those bills will start to eat away at what little funds they have. The Avon Grove Christmas Basket Program tries to make this holiday a little more joyful for those families. Thank you to all the generous people who have made this program a success for so many years. Without your time, donations and support, our campaign would never have been able to service the over 435 families that were cared for in 2014. It would be wonderful if we could say that there is not a need to run the program this year, but the reality is that we still have many families living in our area that are in need of help. Last year we were challenged to fill the baskets with the basic canned food items that we normally provide. Due to this greater number of families and a lesser amount of donations, we have decided to ask our generous parishioners to assist with this part of the program. We will have a collection box in the vestibule beginning the weekend of November 21/22 through the weekend of December 5/6. We would appreciate donations of canned vegetables, canned meats/tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, bagged rice, pasta and stuffing. Please contact me directly if you have any questions about the program. God bless you! John J Brennan [email protected]; 610-869-4100

PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2016 PARISH APPEAL Last August we successfully completed the 2013-2015 Parish Appeal which raised $400,000 for the construction of our Parish Life Center. We thank you. When we initiated that Appeal we intended to focus in the future on specific objectives for capital projects. However, this year, 2015 - 2016, despite corrective actions to our budgeted expenses, we are deviating from that plan because of a budget shortfall You have received a Parish Financial report in the Weekly Bulletin, This will provide you with more detail on last year’s financial status and this year’s budget. Recently, Father Scott sent letters to all parishioners announcing the Parish Appeal for 2016 for $100,000. We need your support. The need is real. Father’s letter has suggested a donation amount based on your generous past giving. It is important that all families try to participate in this Parish Appeal to the extent possible. Certainly, if you can make a donation in the amount suggested in the letter, that would be great. What if you can not afford that much? Consider a smaller donation that is within your means, either on an on-going or one-time basis. Our goal is for every active family to participate. Remember, your contribution can be stopped or reduced if your financial situation changes. This Appeal offers you the opportunity to designate where your donation is to be credited. You can opt to donate to the reduction of the Parish debt to the Archdiocese, or to support Parish operating expenses or for the Parish subsidy to our great school.

 As of November 17, 2015, the parish have invoices totaling $87,121.07 in unpaid invoices.  The payroll totals approximately $48,000 every other week.

donation of $10 will be passed on to St. Rocco Parish in Avondale, which still has a lot of openings for Mass intentions for this year and in 2016. If you want a specific date for the Mass to be said, however, you must contact St. Rocco Parish directly at (610) 268-3365. We will open our calendar to reserve Mass intentions for 2017 on the Tuesday after Easter (March 29, 2016). To be fair to everyone, no reservations for Masses will be taken before then. Thank you for your understanding. Page 12 - 229 Assumption B.V.M.
