Centennial Elementary School We’re Proud Centennial Elementary is proud of its strong, dedicated staff who have developed a caring community with high expectations. Once again, Centennial has received a Level 4 rating in its most recent state report card. We are very proud of our vibrant parent community, with a strong, supportive parent-teacher association (PTA) and a welcoming Family Resource Center dedicated to fostering meaningful parental involvement through volunteer opportunities, parenting resources and coffee meetings.

Core Education Our commitment to student achievement was recognized in 2013 with the Oregon Department of Education’s model school designation. Centennial’s strong results in math and reading achievement continue to demonstrate our belief that all students should have a solid foundation in literacy and mathematical concepts. In addition, Centennial’s staff has worked to develop a solid writing program.

Teamwork Centennial's building-level teams work diligently to promote a solid support network for our students inside and outside of the classroom. Collaboration between the classroom teachers, our behavioral specialist, educational assistants, recess supervisors, Family Center coordinator and administrative staff is utilized as a means for day-to-day support for our students. This process also provides staff with a better understanding of how to help students meet individual learning objectives.

Opportunities Centennial has maintained a vibrant and comprehensive library and media program, which includes additional academic experiences for our talented and gifted (TAG) students under the coordination of our professional library media specialist. Centennial students are active participants in the Oregon Battle of the Books program. Centennial’s annual Jog-a-thon fundraiser supports additional enrichment opportunities and activities to enhance the core educational program, including curriculum-related field trips, speakers and assemblies. Our fourth-grade students also attend a Hult Center performance each year. Centennial actively encourages students and staff to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We are always looking for ways to provide training and resources to expand physical education opportunities for students.

Community Partners • The Centennial PTA supports our school with many fun and exciting fundraising events that provide money for school improvements and classroom projects. • Willamalane Park and Recreation District provides access to 4th-grade swim instruction and partners with the school district to provide after-school care. • Springfield Education Foundation and SELCO Credit Union provide grants that support and enrich innovative school programs. • SUB and EWEB provide funding for WET-WELL hands on science lessons and opportunities. • Springfield’s Rotary clubs help support the Gift of Literacy program, providing hard-cover books to every first-grade student, and also provide free dictionaries to third-graders. • “Young Rembrandts” learn from trained artists who teach visual arts skills in weekly after-school art classes. • Community partners support Centennial’s successful Thanksgiving Food Drive and our popular Family Bingo Night.

Douglas Gardens Elementary School We’re Proud Douglas Gardens is proud to offer all of our students a strong foundation in the basics—reading, reading, writing and math—as well as exemplary programs in music, physical education, science, the arts and technology. We offer a wide array of in-class and extracurricular opportunities for our students. We are very proud of our computer lab and the technology experiences we offer every child at every grade level. Our website is packed with additional resources for families to access at home or in our beautiful Family Center.

Core Instruction Every student receives 120 minutes of core instruction in reading and 60 minutes of core instruction in math daily. Students needing extra support in reading receive targeted additional instruction for at least 30 minutes. We offer support to our second language learners through daily English Language Development classes, iPod projects and Kinderplus. Because we believe in educating the whole child, physical education and character education are considered core subjects at our school.

Opportunities Through a number of grants written by our staff, and donations from our PTA, our students have opportunities to experience performing arts in our community and other educational field trips. We offer Chess Club and Cribbage Club to interested students. We provide additional experiences for our Talented and Gifted, or TAG, students, as well as numerous opportunities for all students to participate in creative extracurricular programs such as dance and garden projects. We also host monthly family nights in our Family Center.

Community Partners Our school partners with Willamalane Park and Recreation District to offer after-school child care. Willamalane also provides swimming instruction for our 4th-graders. We partner with Springfield Rotary clubs and the Springfield Education Foundation to provide other rich experiences for our students. We have a very active and supportive PTA that contributes financial resources raised through fundraisers and provides fun family evenings such as Bingo Night and our Harvest Carnival. In addition, we have many parent volunteers and welcome their participation and leadership.

At Elizabeth Page Elementary School, we offer a comprehensive K–5 music program. We are also a K-5 STEM + Arts school that integrates science, technology, engineering and math to activate student learning through hands-on interactions and real-life connections. As an Oregon Green School, we are working with Partners for Sustainable Schools to promote recycling and create a school compost program to reduce waste. Through our partnership with The School Garden Project, our families and volunteers work together with students to tend our community garden. Students not only learn how to grow food, but they also learn about nutrition on the way to becoming healthy adults, and they get the rewards of contributing to a thriving community.

Guy Lee Elementary School We’re Proud Guy Lee Elementary School was selected as a 2011 National Title I Distinguished School for closing the achievement gap. We are piloting the district’s first dual immersion program, offering one kindergarten classroom instruction in both English and Spanish. Guy Lee is a community school that strives to involve parents in every aspect of their child’s education. Families are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of family engagement opportunities such as weekly bilingual story time, reading/math night, parenting classes and family fun events. We believe that by supporting families, students are better able to reach their full potential.

Pisgah, McGowan Creek and local art museums. Our students also experience gardening through the Farm to School Program. Students are exposed to the arts through the Artists-in-Residence Program, and 5 th-grade students participate in an annual musical. We are a certified Green School and our green team meets weekly. Opportunities Maple offers a comprehensive music program for all students. Students in 5th grade can participate in orchestra. Our school, rebuilt in 2009 through a bond measure, has up-to-date technology throughout our building including laptops in every pod, ceilingmounted projectors, and document cameras. Maple also implements Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) with incentives such as all-stars, star manager badges, all-star store, reward drawings, awards assemblies and hoorays. Other opportunities for students include student council, garden club, Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB), and Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) program.

Community Partners We are proud to collaborate with our families and our community. Maple has an active PTA in our school which meets monthly. We have also made a connection with the Altrusa organization, a group committed to serving its community and supporting literacy. Ridgeview Elementary School We’re Proud The Ridgeview community prides itself in getting the job done. This attitude is best described by our PTO’s recent volunteer fundraising efforts to pay for painting our building. In addition, our student body holds an annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser that helps support the technology needs of a 21st-century classroom. Through fundraising, we have outfitted every classroom with upto-date document cameras and projectors. In addition, we have added laptop computers to our primary grade classrooms to help our students get a jump-start on the skills needed for a successful journey through school.

Core Education All Riverbend students get at least 90 minutes of core reading instruction and 60 minutes of core math instruction each day. Students struggling with reading skills also receive more intensive and focused small group instruction that helps address their deficits. Teachers integrate science, social studies and health lessons into their weekly instruction, building cross-curricular curricular connections when possible. Students also get 60 minutes of music education, 60 minutes of library/media and 60 minutes of PE each week.

Teamwork Riverbend staff and district leadership work hard to collaborate about everything from student growth and achievement to effective behavior support systems. Opportunities At Riverbend Elementary School, teachers look for ways to develop as professionals, students are challenged and encouraged to grow in new ways, and parents and guardians are asked to be an integral part of their student’s plan for success. Student opportunities include the Oregon Battle of the Books, fifth-grade orchestra, music performances, our Jog-a-Thon fundraiser and our spring talent show. Our Parent Teacher Association raises money for our school community to help teachers with tasks, help in the classroom and with supervision, and help organize and coordinate family events such as BINGO night, Family Skate Night and Family Craft Night.

WPRD also provides water safety and swimming lessons for our 4th-graders each year. • The SMART Program (Start Making A Reader Today) brings in volunteers regularly to read with students. • Springfield’s Rotary clubs help produce the Gift of Literacy program, providing books to 1st-graders, and also provide free dictionaries to 3rd-graders. • Kiwanis Club of Eugene donates school and art supplies. • Young Rembrandts works in partnership with Riverbend staff to bring local artists into the classroom. • Nearby Nature grants make it possible to provide enriching field trip experiences for many students. • Representatives from Oregon Department of Forestry and Willamette National Forest provide fire safety education for our first-graders. • Dietering Orchards sponsors free field trips for firstgraders each fall. • Chamber Amici, the world-class musician’s chamber ensemble and resident artists of the Wildish Theater, has adopted Riverbend as part of its educational outreach mission. They perform interactive annual concerts at Riverbend and occasional youth concerts at the Wildish Theatre, all 100% grant-funded.

Thurston Elementary School We’re Proud Thurston Elementary has a strong focus on both community and academic achievement. We help every student to do their B.E.S.T. (Better Every Single Time) so that they will be prepared to go to college should they choose to do so. Our students practice H.E.A.R.T. skills (Honor, Empathy, Accountability, Respect & Teamwork) as they learn to live and work in a caring community. Our six-year-old school is equipped with up-todate technology such as document cameras, projectors and SMART slates. Our laptop “labs” allow students to become computer-literate and ready for a successful journey through school. Thurston Parent Group fundraisers allow our students to take field trips and enjoy artists-in-residence.

• Every student receives 60 minutes of daily mathematics instruction. • During our daily 30 minutes of “Academy,” all students receive an additional 30 minutes of literacy instruction targeted to their individual needs.

Teamwork Teachers collaborate on a weekly basis to plan and analyze student data to ensure that instruction is meeting the needs of all students. Our Response to Intervention teams also meet on a weekly basis to identify students who need additional academic, social or emotional support. With the information from district benchmark tests and progress monitoring, our staff works those together to identify the literacy needs of all students—those at, above and below benchmarks. From this information, instructional plans are built to meet individual student needs.

Opportunities All students in grades K–5 experience educational opportunities during field trips. Students visit the Pumpkin Patch, Wildlife Safari, the Portland Zoo as well as Oregon State University, the State Capital in Salem and the University of Oregon. Fourth-graders receive two weeks of swim instruction through Willamalane. All students participate in our music and library programs. Thurston Elementary is proud to participate in the S.M.A.R.T. reader program that assigns volunteer readers to children in grades 1–3. All students, K–5, may participate in our building and district Battle of the Books program. We celebrate the arts with an artist-in-residence and at least five performances each year. Fifth-grade students can also participate in our elementary school orchestra program.

Community Partners • Willamalane Park and Recreation District provides access to swimming programs and after-school care. • Local utilities SUB and EWEB fund WET-WELL hands-on science programs. • Two Springfield Rotary Clubs sponsor the Gift of Literacy, which provides a hard-cover book for every first-grader and dictionaries to our thirdgraders. • Springfield Education Foundation makes grants for innovative classroom projects. • Thurston Parent Group provides funding and program support through vital fundraising activities.

We’re Proud We are proud of the work we’ve done to build a new elementary school in the community. Now, at three years, we have strong systems in place to support our students both academically and socially. We are excited about our character education based on John Wooden's “Pyramid of Success.” We reinforce these strong foundation skills and character traits every morning during “Otter Time” and during our monthly “Success” assemblies where we recognize five students from every classroom for exhibiting the foundation skills of Hard Work, Enthusiasm, Friendship, Loyalty and Cooperation. We believe that “Smart isn’t something you are, it is something you get,” and we encourage our students to get smarter every day.

Teamwork Our staff collaborates regularly to watch student progress and evaluate our teaching to ensure that students are gaining the skills necessary to experience growth and success. Teachers participate in grade-level teams as well as a Literacy Leadership Team, a Math Leadership Team, a PBIS Team and a building Leadership Team that meet regularly. Instructional assistants meet with our Title I teacher weekly to ensure strong communication. Staff receives ongoing professional development to better meet the needs of our students. Students at Two Rivers–Dos Ríos participate in a number of extracurricular activities. Students have the opportunity to be part of Battle of the Books at every grade level, a Multicultural Celebration, Family Reading Nights, Family Math Night, Family Engineering Night, an after-school enrichment program for students in 4th and 5 th grades, focused enrichment activities for talented and gifted (TAG) students, 5th-grade orchestra, advanced technology experiences, music programs and guest artists. Working with the School Garden Project, the 4th- and 5th-graders are engaged in planting and harvesting our school garden. We are continually seeking new opportunities to enhance the education of our kids. In addition to staff and student involvement, we have an active Parent Teacher Organization that coordinates with our staff to plan school-wide events.

Community Partners • Two Rivers-Dos Ríos partners with Pacific University as a Professional Development School. This partnership allows us to have a lower student/teacher ratio and to help shape our future teachers. • Two Rivers–Dos Ríos has teamed up with the First Baptist Church across the street (C.A.T.S.) and we work together on a number of projects. • Umpqua Bank funds the weekend Snack Pack food program in conjunction with FOOD for Lane County. • Willamalane Park and Recreation District provides access to after-school care. • Two Springfield Rotary Clubs sponsor the Gift of Literacy, which provides a hardcover book for every 1st-grader and dictionaries to our 3rd-graders. • Springfield Education Foundation provides grants for innovative classroom projects. • Volunteers from the Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) program read to kids for an hour each week.

Walterville School We’re Proud The Walterville School community is proud of our commitment to providing a well-balanced, well-rounded education to all students. We offer a strong core education with a focus on reading, math and writing skills. Our goal is for all of our students to be successful, and we support struggling learners by treating kids as individuals, giving them the support and encouragement they need. We are committed to continuous improvement as educators as well. We encourage student involvement and good citizenship.

Teamwork Because we are a small school, teachers work together closely to plan activities for the whole school. We strive to have as many cross-age activities as possible. For example, students of all ages eat and play together. The younger students work with older student mentors while the older students learn important skills by helping the younger ones.

Opportunities Our students have access to a wide variety of opportunities. During the school day, students benefit from a robust library/media program and classrooms infused with instructional technology, where students learn to use technology safely, respectfully and effectively. We strive to teach them how to use technology to learn, inform and communicate in the 21st-century global reality. We host artists-in-residence when possible, and give students a chance to participate in student government. We have an active Battle of the Books program and a Lego Robotics Club. Students benefit from experiential learning through a variety of field trips. We also host a number of family evenings throughout the year, including a family literacy night, a fall harvest festival and an end-of-year carnival.

Community Partners Walterville School has a great relationship with our community. The PTO is very active and involved. Members of the local fire department volunteer in our school as well. Our school also benefits from Rotary projects such as Gift of Literacy, which provides not only books but library cards to our first-graders. We are lucky to receive support from the Springfield Education Foundation through grants for innovative teachers. Walterville School embraces and welcomes the Walterville and Camp Creek communities with open arms and strives to make our school a community resource for the surrounding area.

Yolanda Elementary School All students at Yolanda are fortunate to be taught and served by dedicated staff members who have been with the Yolanda community for an average of about 10 years each. Our highly trained staff provides instructional, clerical and maintenance support for the school. Yolanda’s community is highly involved in its local school through volunteerism, and we have an active PTO that is supportive and committed to assisting the staff in providing a rich educational experience for students. students

Opportunities • All 4th-grade students receive two weeks of swimming lessons through Willamalane Park and Recreation District. • Students receive music and/or library classes weekly. • Fifth-grade students have the opportunity to participate in orchestra twice a week. • Grade 1–5 students receive art on a weekly basis, taught by a retired Yolanda teacher. • Each year, the second grade takes a field trip to Wildlife Safari. • First-grade students visit a pumpkin patch each fall. • Kindergarten students receive extra reading support in our Kinder plus program. • Grade 2–5 students receive extra math support in our after-school Math Club. • Tag students take on challenges in Tag Club.

Community Partners • Willamalane Park and Recreation District provides morning Early Start childcare and after-school Kids Club on site. • The Yolanda PTO supports the school by taking charge of fundraising endeavors to supplement school programs, providing vital volunteer assistance for field trips and in classrooms, and providing family activities for the Yolanda community. • Costco supports Yolanda families with surplus bakery donations each week. • Springfield’s Rotary clubs help produce the Gift of Literacy program and provide free dictionaries to kids. • Springfield Education Foundation makes grants for innovative classroom projects. • Students hone their art skills after school each week under the tutelage of a Young Rembrandts
